The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the United States on June 5, 2025, at a $449.99 MSRP before sales tax. That price is now historical: Nintendo announced a U.S. MSRP increase to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. The original launch package included the console, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, a dock, and the required cables—but not a game, camera, Pro Controller, or expandable storage.
This is a retrospective launch explainer updated for September 2026, covering what Nintendo announced, what changed from the original Switch, compatibility limits, and what buyers need to budget for.

Nintendo Switch 2 launch date and price
Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, confirming a U.S. launch date of June 5, 2025. The standard system launched at $449.99 before sales tax. It was not an upcoming June release as of 2026; June 5, 2025, is the product’s completed launch date.
The Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle launched at $499.99 and included a download code for Mario Kart World. At launch, that made the bundle $50 more than the standalone console. The bundle’s current availability and pricing should be checked on Nintendo’s store rather than assumed from its launch price.
Nintendo later announced that the U.S. MSRP for the Switch 2 system would rise to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. That means the original $449.99 figure should be treated as the launch price, not as the current permanent U.S. price.
What comes in the standard box?
The base package includes:
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
- Joy-Con 2 Grip
- Two Joy-Con 2 Straps
- Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
- Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
- USB-C Charging Cable
The standard box does not include a game, camera, Pro Controller, additional controllers, or a microSD Express card. The console includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers, so basic two-player tabletop play is possible without buying another controller, although additional Joy-Con 2 pairs are optional purchases.

A larger, sharper handheld screen
Switch 2 uses a 7.9-inch LCD display with a 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 support, and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz in supported situations. It is an LCD rather than an OLED panel, so buyers should not describe it as an OLED successor.
In TV mode, Nintendo lists output of up to 4K at 60 frames per second. Lower resolutions can support up to 120 frames per second when the game and television support it. Those are output capabilities, not guarantees that every game runs at 4K, 120fps, HDR, or VRR.
More internal storage
The console has 256GB of internal storage—eight times the original standard Switch’s 32GB capacity. Some of that space is reserved for system software, so the full 256GB is not available for games.
Expandable game storage requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo’s specifications list support for cards up to 2TB. A system update is required before a microSD Express card can be used. Existing ordinary microSD cards can be used for transferring screenshots and videos from an original Switch, but they are not the equivalent solution for Switch 2 game storage.

New Joy-Con 2 controllers
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically instead of using the original Switch rail mechanism. Either controller can function as a mouse in compatible games, creating new control options for strategy, simulation, and other software designed around the feature.
Mouse operation depends on game support and the playing surface. Nintendo warns that some fabrics may not respond properly and that rubbing the controllers against fabric can cause color fading. Joy-Con 2 controllers are also not universally interchangeable with original Joy-Con grips and accessories.
GameChat
GameChat is built into Switch 2 and starts with the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2. It supports voice chat for up to 12 people in different locations, screen sharing for up to four friends, and optional video chat when a compatible USB-C camera is connected.

The console’s built-in microphone supports voice communication, while the separate camera is required for video. GameChat includes reporting and safety features, and a parent or guardian must approve GameChat use through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for children under 16.
Nintendo’s launch-period exception allowed GameChat without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through the end of March 2026. That period has ended; Nintendo Switch Online is required for GameChat afterward.

Backward compatibility: many games, not everything
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but it is not universally backward-compatible. Nintendo maintains an individual compatibility guide identifying unsupported titles, partial compatibility, and games that require original hardware.
The main issue is often not the game card itself but the controls or accessories required by a particular game. Examples include:
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit the Ring-Con or leg strap, so original Joy-Con are required for relevant play modes.
- 1-2-Switch: infrared-camera functionality requires the original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Labo: some Toy-Con products cannot accommodate the larger Switch 2 console.
- Specialized accessories: certain games may require original Joy-Con or another original Switch accessory.
Check the specific title before buying Switch 2 if your library includes fitness games, infrared-camera software, Nintendo Labo, or other accessory-dependent experiences.
Which original Switch accessories work?
Accessory compatibility is more complicated than a simple yes-or-no label:
- Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can connect wirelessly to Switch 2.
- The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but Nintendo says it cannot power the Switch 2 dock because of different power-output requirements.
- Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot attach to the original Joy-Con Grip or original Joy-Con Charging Grip.
- Switch 2 docks and original Switch docks should not be treated as interchangeable replacements.
- Original Joy-Con may be needed for games using the Ring-Con, infrared camera, leg strap, or certain Nintendo Labo products.
- Original Joy-Con connected wirelessly to Switch 2 require an original Switch console or compatible charging accessory for charging.
Nintendo’s accessory compatibility support page is the safest reference for a specific controller, dock, adapter, or accessory.
Launch games and the larger Switch 2 library
Nintendo’s launch announcement highlighted software including Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Street Fighter 6, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE, Hogwarts Legacy, Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Split Fiction.
Those games should not all be described as launch-day releases solely because they appeared in the announcement. For a current view, Nintendo’s Switch 2 games showroom lists later additions and current software availability, including titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Hades II – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Resident Evil Requiem, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, Star Fox, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Game availability and Nintendo Store prices can change, so current listings should be checked before purchase.

GameShare and Virtual Game Cards
GameShare
GameShare lets a Switch 2 owner with a compatible game invite other players to join a temporary local-play session. Some GameShare situations can include original Switch systems, but only the Switch 2 owner can initiate the invitation, and compatibility varies by game.
GameShare does not permanently give every participant access to the game. Switch systems also cannot receive Switch 2-exclusive games through GameChat-based GameShare.

Virtual Game Cards let users manage purchased digital games from the Home Menu, load games onto up to two systems associated with the same Nintendo Account, and play an activated digital game offline.
Eligible digital games can also be lent to members of the same Nintendo Account Family Group. Nintendo’s system allows one digital game to be lent per account for up to 14 days, subject to its conditions. Internet or local communication may be required for loading, pairing, lending, and returning games, and some software is not supported.
What should buyers budget for?
The console is only the beginning of the ownership cost for some households. Depending on how you play, you may also need:
- Games
- A microSD Express card for additional game storage
- Nintendo Switch Online for GameChat after March 2026, online multiplayer, and other online features
- A compatible USB-C camera for GameChat video
- Extra Joy-Con 2 controllers for larger local multiplayer groups
- A Pro Controller for traditional TV play
- Original Joy-Con or specialized accessories for incompatible legacy games
Nintendo’s store showed, during the August 18, 2026 research snapshot, a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card at $59.99, a Switch 2 Pro Controller at $89.99, a Switch 2 Camera at $54.99, and a Joy-Con 2 pair at $99.99. These are dated store signals, not guaranteed current prices or stock.
Should you buy a Nintendo Switch 2?
Buy if you want Nintendo’s newest games
Switch 2 is the necessary platform for Switch 2-exclusive software and the enhanced versions of selected Switch games. Its larger 1080p screen, faster hardware, expanded internal storage, mouse-capable controllers, and new communication features also make it a meaningful upgrade over the original Switch.
Buy if you are new to Nintendo’s hybrid format
The system combines handheld, tabletop, and TV play, and the standard box includes two controllers and a dock. However, factor the revised $499.99 U.S. MSRP, the price of games, and any storage or online-service costs into the decision.
Keep an original Switch if your library depends on legacy accessories
Owners of Ring Fit Adventure, Nintendo Labo, infrared-camera software, or other specialized games should check compatibility title by title. Original Joy-Con and some older accessories remain useful, but Switch 2 does not make every original setup interchangeable.
Think carefully if you mainly play existing Switch games
Many Switch games work, but the upgrade is less compelling if your priority is a library that already runs well on existing hardware and does not benefit from Switch 2 enhancements. The microSD Express requirement also means older expansion cards are not a straightforward carryover for game storage.
Bottom line
The statement that Nintendo Switch 2 “arrives on June 5th for $449.99” was accurate for the April 2025 launch announcement, but it is now outdated in two important ways: the console launched on June 5, 2025, and Nintendo announced a U.S. price increase to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026.
Switch 2 offers a larger 1080p LCD, 256GB storage, improved performance, magnetic mouse-capable Joy-Con 2 controllers, and access to new and enhanced games. It also carries meaningful caveats: backward compatibility is not universal, microSD Express is required for game expansion, and GameChat now requires Nintendo Switch Online.
