Nintendo’s Virtual Boy revival is a library of selected games for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, paired with two viewing accessories—not a new standalone console. The Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection launched February 17, 2026, and playing its games requires both a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and one of the two Virtual Boy accessories. Nintendo’s U.S. announcement lists the replica-style model at $99.99 and the cardboard model at $24.99.
What Nintendo is bringing back
The release adds selected Virtual Boy games to Nintendo’s Classics library for Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo presents the accessories as a way to view the games with 3D visuals, citing Teleroboxer and Galactic Pinball as examples. The plastic accessory is designed to evoke the original system, but Nintendo says it “is not a reproduction of it.” This is a game-library revival with new viewing hardware, not a reissue of the original Virtual Boy console. Which accessory should you choose?
Nintendo announced these U.S. regular prices and package contents. The prices are not a guarantee of current inventory, marketplace pricing, or prices outside the United States.

The full accessory has more components and a stand; Nintendo’s setup guide says some components can be removed or replaced. The cardboard model is the lower-priced alternative and uses adjustable brackets. Nintendo’s published details establish price and included parts, but do not establish that either model is more comfortable or durable. What you need to play
- A Virtual Boy accessory: Nintendo requires one of the two accessories to play games in the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics collection.
- Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: The Expansion Pack is required to access the library. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is sufficient to buy an accessory; Expansion Pack is not required for the purchase itself. Free-trial members cannot buy the accessories.
- A compatible console: Nintendo lists Switch 2, Switch, and Switch – OLED Model as compatible. Switch Lite is not compatible with the accessories, and the library software does not appear on Switch Lite.
- Availability in the supported region: Nintendo’s announcement says the game library is available only in the United States and Canada. Do not assume the same release or purchase availability in other regions.

How to set up each model
Full replica-style accessory
- On Switch 2, remove the Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- Insert the console into the accessory with its screen facing the lenses.
- Attach the accessory to its stand and adjust the stand angle.
- If using an original Switch, use the included Switch attachment bracket in place of the preinstalled Switch 2 bracket. Use a compatible controller wirelessly.
Cardboard model
- Remove one Joy-Con controller.
- Set the console latch to the position for your console: Nintendo’s instructions distinguish Switch 2 from Switch.
- Slide the console into the accessory with the screen facing the lenses.
- After the console is seated, reattach the controller.

Where to buy, and what happens to access later
Nintendo Support says the accessories are sold through Nintendo Store in the United States and Canada. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to buy them, but a free trial does not qualify. Nintendo limits purchases to one of each accessory per Nintendo Account. The company states that the accessories are not a limited-time offer; its FAQ says, “The accessories are not a limited-time offer.” Store policies, inventory, and prices can change, so check Nintendo Store for current details. Nintendo Support’s FAQ gives the current stated rules.
Access to Virtual Boy and other Expansion Pack game libraries continues while the applicable membership is active. Offline play is possible, but Nintendo says an active member must verify membership online every seven days. Nintendo does not publish a fixed schedule for new library releases.
