Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court, alleging patent infringement. They sought an injunction and damages; that is what the plaintiffs requested, not a court finding that Pocketpair infringed their patents. The case was not described as a copyright lawsuit in Nintendo’s filing announcement.

What is the lawsuit about?

Nintendo announced on September 19, 2024, that it and The Pokémon Company had filed suit against Pocketpair the previous day. The companies characterized the case as patent infringement and said they were seeking an injunction against the alleged infringement and compensation for damages. Those are the plaintiffs’ claims and requested remedies, not a ruling on the merits.

The lawsuit is sometimes framed as a dispute over Palworld being “Pokémon-like,” including online debate about its creature designs. But Nintendo’s announcement describes a patent-infringement case; it does not frame the suit as a copyright claim. Public comparisons between the games do not establish what the court was asked to decide.

Which patents did Pocketpair say were identified?

In a November 8, 2024, statement, Pocketpair said the plaintiffs identified three Japanese patents. The patent numbers and registration dates below come from Pocketpair’s account, not an independently reviewed court docket.

The available statements establish the patent numbers, but do not provide a verified court determination that Palworld infringed them. The claims remain allegations unless and until resolved by the court or otherwise concluded.

What did the plaintiffs seek, and how does Pocketpair respond?

Pocketpair said the plaintiffs sought an injunction against Palworld and 5 million yen plus late-payment damages from each plaintiff. It said the requested damages covered a portion of losses from each patent’s registration date through the filing of the lawsuit. These were claimed demands reported by Pocketpair in 2024, not an award.

In a May 8, 2025, statement, Pocketpair said it disputes the infringement allegations and asserts that the patents are invalid. Those are the developer’s positions; they are not court findings. The core disagreement is therefore between the plaintiffs’ allegation of patent infringement and Pocketpair’s denial and invalidity position.

Why did Palworld’s mechanics change?

Pocketpair attributed two gameplay changes to the ongoing litigation. The changes concern how players summon and glide with Pals, and the developer described them in its May 2025 statement.

Gliding

Pocketpair said patch v0.5.5 changed gliding so players use an inventory glider rather than a Pal.

Did Nintendo win the Palworld lawsuit?

No verified court victory or final decision is established here. A June 2026 GamesRadar report described the case as ongoing and said a court presentation was scheduled for October 2026, with an opinion scheduled for November. The research cutoff is October 8, 2026—after the reported presentation date—but no authoritative post-presentation update or final decision was located. It is therefore not established whether the presentation occurred or what the court has decided.

GamesRadar also summarized legal and intellectual-property analyst Florian Mueller’s view that the claims had narrowed and potential damages might be limited. That is an attributed expert assessment, not a court ruling or confirmed damages outcome.
