Nioh 3 is a confident evolution of Team Ninja’s action-RPG formula: it pairs the series’ demanding, build-heavy combat with freely explorable open fields and two instantly switchable fighting styles. Reviewers praise its combat depth and exploration, but the steady flood of loot and menu work remain real costs. It is more inviting at the start for at least one reviewer, not an easy game overall.
What is Nioh 3, and where can you play it?
Nioh 3 launched on February 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam, according to KOEI TECMO’s launch announcement. It follows Tokugawa Takechiyo, whose younger brother Kunimatsu is plotting to overthrow him, and moves across Edo Castle, Totomi during the Warring States period, Heian-era Kyoto, and the Bakumatsu period.

The publisher describes the settings as four historical eras and frames the conflict around a battle against the Crucible. Its Team NINJA overview also notes that the Nioh series had surpassed 8.5 million units sold worldwide as of October 8, 2026; that is a combined series figure, not sales for Nioh 3.
Is Nioh 3 open world?
KOEI TECMO calls the areas “open fields,” while reviewers sometimes use “open world” or “semi-open world.” The distinction matters: the game offers freely explorable spaces rather than only discrete mission stages, but the official description does not establish that it follows the uninterrupted, seamless-world model associated with some open-world games. TechRadar found its fields richly detailed without overwhelming its reviewer with objectives; Tom’s Guide also found the world more compelling after spending time with it. Those are individual impressions, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the structure.
#1 Best Overall
The historical shifts give those areas different settings, from Edo and Warring States-era Japan to Heian Kyoto and the Bakumatsu. The result is a broader-feeling framework for exploration without abandoning the series’ focus on combat encounters and carefully built character progression.
How do Samurai and Ninja styles work?
The major combat change is the ability to switch instantly between Samurai and Ninja styles. KOEI TECMO’s official game page and Team NINJA overview describe distinct strengths for each, while allowing players to stick with one style if they prefer.
| Style | What it emphasizes | Distinctive tools |
|---|---|---|
| Samurai | A grounded approach to combat | Arts Proficiency and a last-moment Deflect action |
| Ninja | Quick movement and aerial actions | Ninjutsu techniques such as Mist and Evade |
Switching gives players a way to respond to changing situations without treating a chosen style as a permanent commitment. The depth also comes from the weapons and character-building around those styles. PC Gamer reports that the game retains 14 melee weapon types with customizable skills and moves, continuing the series’ emphasis on tailoring a fighting approach.

How good is the combat and build customization?
Combat is the game’s clearest strength in the reviews cited here. TechRadar highlights its speed and build variety; PC Gamer praises both the combat and the detail in individual weapon approaches. Tom’s Guide says the combat flow and character-building became compelling after an initially difficult start.
This is not a reinvention that replaces Nioh’s action-RPG identity with exploration. The new fields and style switching broaden how players move through encounters, while weapons, skills, and builds keep the familiar demand for deliberate character choices. That combination is likely to appeal most to players who enjoy learning a combat system and tuning a character around it.
Is Nioh 3 harder than Nioh 2?
There is no single answer that applies to every player. TechRadar found Nioh 3’s early game more approachable than its predecessors, but also reported that later chapters and Crucible sections retain substantial challenge. That supports a more forgiving opening for some players, not a blanket claim that the full game is easy or definitively easier than Nioh 2.

- Every title available on Playstation 5 will support 4K resolution and deliver stunning graphics, fast-paced combat with 120fps frame gameplay, ultra-fast load times, and the ability to transfer data from the PS4 to resume the adventure where you left off.
Tom’s Guide likewise describes an initially difficult start before its combat and character-building clicked. If you are new to the series, expect an action RPG that can take time to teach its systems; if you are returning, the new styles do not remove the need to learn encounters and build effectively.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Loot and inventory work: TechRadar flags near-constant loot and the inventory management it creates. Tom’s Guide also points to menu management as a drawback.
- Opaque systems and repetition: PC Gamer says some mechanics are obtuse and some side quests reuse maps.
- Uneven highlights: Tom’s Guide found some bosses less memorable, even as it warmed to the combat and character-building.
The trade-off is familiar to players of loot-heavy action RPGs: a deep supply of gear and build choices can make progression satisfying, but sorting drops and navigating menus can interrupt the action. The exploration does not remove that friction.

TechRadar’s reviewer reported inconsistent performance in dense environments during a roughly 50-hour Steam playthrough on a PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060, using an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controller primarily. This is one reviewer’s experience on one setup, not a benchmark or a general finding about PC compatibility. The cited evidence does not establish how the game performs across other hardware configurations.

Which edition should you choose?
At launch, KOEI TECMO announced a Standard Edition, a physical SteelBook Launch Edition, and a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes a Season Pass. The Treasure Box was listed with the base game, a Scampuss keychain, a desk pad, an official artbook, and a soundtrack CD. Edition details and retail stock can vary by region and date, so check current listings before buying. The announcement confirms the artbook as a Treasure Box inclusion; it does not establish that the book is sold separately.
The publisher also announced a free demo with solo and online multiplayer for up to three players, plus save transfer to the full game. Its time-limited bonus had a February 15, 2026 deadline and should not be treated as currently obtainable.
Is Nioh 3 worth playing?
If you want demanding combat, substantial build options, and more room to explore between fights, Nioh 3 makes a persuasive case for the series’ next step. The Samurai/Ninja switch adds a meaningful new dimension, and reviewers’ praise for combat and exploration suggests the expanded structure serves the core action rather than displacing it.
