Pick any Nirnroot to start Seeking Your Roots. For an easy early haul, search Shadeleaf Copse northeast of Skingrad: GameSpot reports three plants along the shore of its small pond. You will need 100 Nirnroots in total to complete the quest’s four collection stages and unlock every grade of Elixir of Exploration.
Where to find Nirnroot first
Shadeleaf Copse: a convenient early cluster
Shadeleaf Copse is northeast of Skingrad. GameSpot’s Seeking Your Roots walkthrough identifies three Nirnroots spread along the edge of a small pond, making it a useful first stop rather than a guarantee of a large harvest.
Search water, but check indoors and underground too
Nirnroot commonly grows near water, so follow shorelines and inspect ponds as well as rivers and lakes. Listen for its distinctive, distorted gong-like sound as you approach. Water is a clue, not a rule: plants also appear in caves, indoor planters, and other locations. One example in GameSpot’s walkthrough is a Nirnroot in a pot inside the Odiil Farm house, on the Black Road between the Imperial City and Chorrol.
Blackwood and broader regional routes
For a larger search, the north-central swampland of Blackwood is a particularly dense region, according to the Gamer Guides location list. The wet terrain is not obvious from the world map, so explore the ground rather than relying on visible map water features. The guide also groups locations around the Imperial City, City Isle and Lake Rumare; Upper Niben, Niben Bay and Bravil; and Lower Niben, Leyawiin and Blackwood. Examples include the Imperial City Waterfront, Market District shop planters, and shores and islands along rivers. Use the linked guide for its detailed location route; these regional pointers are not a complete coordinate-by-coordinate map.

Gamer Guides cautions that many Nirnroots do not respawn. Treat plants you have already harvested as a limited resource and keep track of your progress toward the quest totals.
How to start and complete Seeking Your Roots
- Harvest your first Nirnroot. Picking one starts Seeking Your Roots.
- Find Sinderion. He is in the cellar of the West Weald Inn, near Skingrad’s western gate. You can speak with an alchemist to get directed toward him, or go to the inn yourself.
- Collect and turn in the requested amounts. The stages ask for 10, then 20, then 30, then 40 additional Nirnroots. That is 100 plants altogether.
- Return after each stage. GameSpot reports that the first elixir is ready after waiting a day; Sinderion sells elixirs after each grade is unlocked.

The thresholds and grade names are listed by Gamer Guides. The guide says the first grade includes Fortify Health and Nighteye, with further effects added at stronger grades; consult its full table for exact effect values and durations. The quest is complete when you meet the final cumulative total and turn in the requested plants.

- Check the banks of small ponds, not just prominent lakes and rivers.
- Listen for Nirnroot’s distinctive sound as you move through likely areas.
- Inspect planters and indoor spaces, and do not rule out caves.
- Use a detailed regional route when you need specific locations; not every plant is marked on the map.
- Prioritize Blackwood if you want a dense region, while remembering its swamp terrain can be hard to read from the world map.
Bethesda’s beginner’s guide encourages players to explore away from the main path, but it does not document Nirnroot locations or quest mechanics. The location and quest details here come from game guides rather than official patch documentation.
