“nl7models0404.dll is missing” and “nl7models0404.dll was not found” are Windows loader errors. You may also see “could not be loaded,” “not a valid Windows image,” or “the code execution cannot proceed.”
The 60-second answer
NL7Models0404.dll is a genuine Microsoft natural-language processing component. It belongs to the Traditional Chinese full-text search stack and works with the MsWb70404.dll word breaker. Microsoft lists it as a dependent file for Traditional Chinese, locale identifier 1028, in its full-text word-breaker documentation.
It may be installed by Windows, SQL Server, SharePoint, or another Microsoft product. Not every Windows computer should contain it, and the correct location depends on the Windows build and the product that owns the file.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. First determine which program displays the error, then repair that installation. If the error appears during normal Windows activity, update Windows and run DISM followed by SFC.

What nl7models0404.dll does
The 0404 portion identifies Traditional Chinese resources. It corresponds to LCID 1028. It does not indicate that the file came from an unrelated Chinese-language game or third-party application.
Microsoft documents this relationship:
- Word breaker:
MsWb70404.dll - Dependent files:
NL7Data0404.dll,NL7Lexicons0404.dll, andNL7Models0404.dll - Language: Traditional Chinese
- LCID: 1028
The file is used by full-text indexing and natural-language processing. Microsoft also documents it in SQL Server full-text binary upgrade handling.
The filename can appear in historical SharePoint Server and SharePoint Foundation servicing inventories. That means it is not exclusively a generic Windows file. It can be serviced as part of a Microsoft server product installation.
Is the file safe
The filename itself is legitimate, but a filename does not prove that a particular copy is safe. A trustworthy copy should come through Windows servicing or an official Microsoft product installer and should have a valid Microsoft signature where applicable.

The exact path, version, file size, and architecture can vary. Do not use a historical file listing as proof that the same file belongs on a current Windows installation.
What the different errors mean
| Message | Usual meaning |
|---|---|
| “is missing” or “was not found” | The calling program cannot find the file in its expected search path. |
| “could not be loaded” | The file or one of its dependencies failed to load. |
| “not a valid Windows image” | The file may be damaged, incomplete, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. |
| “entry point not found” | The application found a DLL, but it is the wrong version or lacks the expected function. |
| Error appears only in one Microsoft product | That product’s installation is the leading suspect. |
| Error appears during Windows search or system activity | Windows component damage or a failed update is more likely. |
If the file exists but the error continues, the problem may be a dependent DLL, an incorrect search path, a damaged installation, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the error
Before repairing Windows globally, note when the message appears.
- At sign-in or during Windows search: treat it as a possible Windows component problem.
- When SQL Server starts or performs full-text indexing: repair SQL Server and its full-text components.
- When SharePoint starts or services a farm: repair or update SharePoint.
- When one desktop program or game starts: repair or reinstall that program.
- Immediately after antivirus activity: check quarantine before replacing anything.
If the message names an executable, search for that executable in Task Manager or its shortcut properties. The executable often identifies the owning product more reliably than the DLL filename.

Do not enable random Windows features merely because the file relates to search. Windows Features can add full-text components, but they do not repair a damaged SQL Server or SharePoint installation.
Fix 2: Update Windows, then repair system files
This is the correct first repair when the error occurs outside one specific application.
Install updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Then run DISM and SFC in the correct order.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when SFC completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files against that repaired store. Microsoft describes this order in its System File Checker repair guidance.
A successful repair usually ends with a message that Windows found and repaired corrupted files, or that no integrity violations were found. Test the program that produced the error.
Recommended Free Tools
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows repair source rather than downloading the DLL:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a valid repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build.
The manual DISM and SFC process is safe but gives you limited visibility into which component caused the problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and repairing the owning Microsoft application remains the definitive fix when that application is at fault.
Fix 3: Repair SQL Server or SharePoint
If the message appears during SQL Server full-text search, do not copy a Windows DLL into a SQL Server folder. Microsoft documents NL7Models0404.dll as part of SQL Server’s full-text binary relationships and upgrade handling.
For SQL Server:
- Sign in with an account that can modify the installation.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the relevant Microsoft SQL Server installation.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify or Uninstall/Change, depending on the installer.
- In SQL Server Setup, choose the maintenance or repair option.
- Select the affected instance and full-text components when offered.
- Complete setup and restart any affected SQL Server services.
- Test the full-text catalog or query that previously failed.
Use the SQL Server installer or an official Microsoft update for the installed release. Do not replace one full-text binary with a file taken from another Windows build or another SQL Server installation.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
For SharePoint:
- Confirm which SharePoint server reports the error.
- Back up configuration and content databases according to your farm procedures.
- Use the matching SharePoint installation media or supported update package.
- Run the SharePoint repair or update process on the affected server.
- Complete the required configuration wizard steps for the farm.
- Confirm that the affected SharePoint service starts and that search operations work.
SharePoint servicing records show that this filename has appeared in Microsoft SharePoint hotfix inventories. That establishes a product relationship, but it does not make an old hotfix file suitable for a current system.
Fix 4: Repair the application that shows the message
If only one application fails, repair that application before repairing Windows.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, if available.
Reset can remove application settings or local data, so use it only after checking where the application stores important files.

- Open the application’s official installer or launcher.
- Look for Repair, Verify files, or Check for updates.
- Apply the latest supported update.
- Reinstall from the developer’s official installer if necessary.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a Microsoft product, use its own installer and servicing tools. Reinstalling a generic runtime is not a substitute for repairing the product that installed the file.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection involving the DLL.
- Review its path, detection name, and action.
- Restore it only when the location and Microsoft provenance are trustworthy and the detection is clearly a false positive.
Microsoft warns that a restored file can be detected again unless it is explicitly allowed. Do not disable antivirus protection just to force an unknown DLL into place. If the file was in an application directory, reinstall that application instead of restoring a questionable copy.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch can cause a load failure, but the filename alone does not reveal the correct architecture. Public DLL metadata is not reliable enough to choose a replacement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use these rules:
- Keep a 32-bit application with its intended 32-bit product components.
- Keep a 64-bit application with its intended 64-bit product components.
- Do not copy a file between
System32,SysWOW64, SQL Server folders, SharePoint folders, and application directories. - Do not assume that a file in
System32is 64-bit simply because of its folder name. - Repair the installation that owns the file instead of guessing.
If the error also names a separate runtime DLL, investigate that runtime separately. NL7Models0404.dll is associated with Microsoft full-text language processing, not with Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET. Reinstalling those packages should not be the primary remedy for this filename alone.

Fix 7: Update a related driver only when the timing supports it
A driver is not the normal owner of this language-model DLL. Consider a driver update only if the error began immediately after a Windows or device change and the affected application depends on that device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Use the device manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which ones need attention, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional and is not a replacement for repairing SQL Server, SharePoint, or the application that owns this DLL.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not register this file with regsvr32.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. NL7Models0404.dll is a language-model dependency used by full-text processing, not normally an ActiveX or COM server. Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsregsvr32 nl7models0404.dll
regsvr32 /u nl7models0404.dll
Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32. A registration error does not prove that the file is missing or damaged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download the DLL manually
Avoid DLL download sites and files supplied through forums or random mirrors. A manually downloaded copy may contain malware, belong to a different Windows or product build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is damaged.
There is no verified standalone Microsoft download page for this DLL. Use:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- The official SQL Server installer or update
- The official SharePoint installer or update
- The application developer’s official installer
Copying a DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or beside an executable can create version conflicts and bypass normal servicing.
If SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the CBS log if deeper diagnosis is required.
- Use a valid matching repair source if DISM cannot obtain files from Windows Update.
- Repair the application if only one program is affected.
If Windows remains damaged, use System Restore when the issue began after a recent update or installation. Open Start, search for Recovery, choose Open System Restore, select a restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming. Back up important files first. Microsoft explains the available choices in its Windows recovery options.

FAQ
Is nl7models0404.dll a Windows file or an application file?
It can be associated with Windows language and search components, SQL Server full-text search, or SharePoint servicing. The message’s timing and the executable named in the error identify the owner.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC need this file?
No. Language resources and Microsoft product components vary between installations. Its absence is not automatically a Windows problem.
What does 0404 mean?
It identifies Traditional Chinese resources and corresponds to locale identifier 1028.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this DLL alone. Those runtimes are not indicated by its documented full-text-search role. Install or repair them only when the error names a separate runtime component or the owning application specifically requires one.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
The filename does not establish that. Architecture can vary with the owning Windows or Microsoft product component. Do not select a replacement based on a download-site listing.
Where should it be located?
There is no single safe path that applies to every installation. The correct location varies by Windows release, architecture, servicing package, SQL Server instance, SharePoint installation, or other owning product.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually not. It is a dependency for natural-language processing, not normally a self-registering COM DLL.
When should I use System Restore or an in-place repair?
Use System Restore when the failure follows a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists. Use an in-place repair when Windows servicing remains damaged after DISM and SFC, while preserving the owning application’s repair process for application-specific failures.
