opsetupdll.dll is a third-party application file associated mainly with Softex OmniPass and older HP SimplePass software, not a Windows system component. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program that requested it, or remove that program’s leftover startup entry instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
opsetupdll.dll is a dynamic-link library used by Softex authentication software. OmniPass used it as part of its fingerprint, password, and authentication features. HP SimplePass 8 was based on Softex software, so an older HP computer may also report this file when SimplePass starts.

The file normally belongs inside the parent application’s installation folder. An OmniPass installation record places it under a path similar to:
C:Program FilesSoftexOmniPassOPSetupDll.dll
The capitalization may differ because Windows treats file names without regard to case.

There is no verified evidence that opsetupdll.dll ships with Windows or belongs in either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not copy it into either location. Public records list conflicting historical versions and architectures, so there is no single version, size, checksum, or 32-bit/64-bit copy that is guaranteed to work on every computer.
Causes and symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when opening fingerprint or password software | Damaged or incomplete OmniPass/SimplePass installation | Repair or reinstall the parent program |
| The message appears immediately after signing in | A failed upgrade left a startup item behind | Repair the program or remove its startup entry |
| The error began after antivirus action | The DLL was quarantined | Verify its path and installer before restoring it |
| The program was recently removed | Uninstall left a service, shortcut, or startup reference | Uninstall remaining components and disable the orphaned entry |
| Reinstalling the DLL does not help | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Reinstall the complete application and its driver |
| The file is found in a temporary or random folder | Possible tampering or an unrelated file | Do not restore or run it until verified |
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that opsetupdll.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Start by finding what launches the error. This prevents you from repairing the wrong application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Note the complete error window, including any application name or path.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries named SimplePass, OmniPass, Softex, Fingerprint, or a similarly named HP or Lenovo authentication utility.
- Right-click a matching entry and choose Open file location if that option is available.
- Check whether the folder belongs to HP, Softex, or the computer manufacturer.
You can also inspect the error after booting:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Check recent Error events around the time the message appeared.
- Look for the application name or executable that attempted to load the DLL.
If the calling program is still installed, use that program’s repair or reinstall process. If it is already gone, skip to the orphaned-startup fix below.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall HP SimplePass or OmniPass
This is the most likely solution when the error appears with fingerprint or password software.
If the program offers a repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP SimplePass, OmniPass, Softex, or fingerprint software.
- Select the three dots beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Some older desktop programs do not show Advanced options or Repair. In that case:
- Open Control Panel from the Start menu.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the SimplePass or OmniPass entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair and restart the computer.
If repair does not work
Reinstall the package made for the exact computer model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Write down the HP model from the label, BIOS screen, or Settings > System > About.
- Open the computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search for the model and select the correct Windows version.
- Download the original SimplePass, OmniPass, fingerprint, or authentication package if it is still provided.
- Run the installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows after installation.
An old SimplePass package may not work correctly on a modern Windows installation, particularly if its fingerprint driver is obsolete. Do not mix SimplePass Series 6 and Series 8 packages, and do not install a package intended for another HP model merely because the names match.
If the manufacturer no longer provides the software, removing the obsolete program and its startup entry is usually safer than forcing an old DLL into Windows.
Fix 3: Remove an obsolete startup entry
Use this fix when the error appears at every boot but SimplePass or OmniPass is no longer needed.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove any remaining entry for SimplePass, OmniPass, Softex, or the related fingerprint utility.
- If it is not listed, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the related authentication software if it appears there.
- Restart Windows.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click any obsolete SimplePass, OmniPass, Softex, or fingerprint entry.
- Choose Disable.
Do not disable a startup item merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm that its file location belongs to the removed authentication program. If the error continues, check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that mention SimplePass, OmniPass, Softex, or fingerprint software.
- Right-click a task only after confirming it belongs to the removed program.
- Select Disable, then restart.
If a service remains, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features again and look for a separate fingerprint or authentication component. Avoid deleting registry entries manually unless you have a verified backup and know exactly which orphaned entry is responsible.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
If the error began after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the original file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select the detection associated with
opsetupdll.dll. - Read the original file path, detection name, and affected application.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The original path was inside the trusted SimplePass or OmniPass installation folder.
- The parent program came from the computer manufacturer or its original installer.
- The file’s digital signature and origin are consistent with that installation.
- You have confirmed that the antivirus detection is a false positive.
If the file came from a download folder, temporary directory, email attachment, or random user-profile location, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer, so do not treat quarantine as proof that the DLL is safe or unsafe by itself.

Fix 5: Update the fingerprint driver and application package
A damaged or incompatible fingerprint driver can prevent authentication software from loading its DLL.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Also check Human Interface Devices and Other devices for an unknown fingerprint device.
- Right-click the fingerprint device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For the most reliable match, download the fingerprint driver from the manufacturer’s support page for the exact computer model. Do not substitute a driver from a different model or install a 32-bit package on 64-bit Windows.
Manually hunting through model-specific driver pages and guessing which of several biometric drivers is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version; reinstalling the original authentication program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other problems exist
opsetupdll.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is unlikely to recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when you also see damaged Windows features, update failures, crashes, or errors involving built-in system files.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected system files. If either command reports corruption that it could not repair, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. They still will not be a guaranteed replacement for a missing OmniPass or SimplePass file.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system issues in a scan, while repairs are performed by the full version; for an application-specific DLL, reinstalling the parent program remains the definitive repair.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not use this as a general fix:
regsvr32 opsetupdll.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that opsetupdll.dll is an ActiveX or COM self-registering library.
If you run the command anyway, Windows may report that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not mean the DLL needs to be copied into System32, and changing between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32 will not repair a missing application installation.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Do not download opsetupdll.dll from a random DLL index, file mirror, forum, or software bundle. A downloaded copy may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different OmniPass release, or lack the dependencies required by the calling application. Copying it into System32 can also create version conflicts and hide the real installation problem.
Use the original HP or computer-manufacturer support package, or the original Softex application installer you already possess. If the software is no longer supported, remove it and its orphaned startup mechanism instead.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before attempting another repair:
- The exact error wording
- The application or executable named in the dialog
- The path where Windows expects the DLL
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- The computer manufacturer and exact model
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file
- Whether SimplePass or OmniPass is still listed as installed
If the error started immediately after a recent application or driver change, System Restore may help:
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore can change installed applications, drivers, settings, and system state. Use it only when a suitable restore point exists and you understand what may be reverted.
FAQ
Is opsetupdll.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with third-party Softex authentication software and should not normally be located in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does every copy belong to HP SimplePass?
No. Softex OmniPass is the better-established parent product. HP SimplePass 8 was based on Softex software, while some other manufacturer fingerprint installations may also contain similarly associated files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I download just the DLL?
It is not recommended. Restore the original application through its installer, or remove the obsolete application that is still requesting the file.
Will SFC restore opsetupdll.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this DLL belongs to third-party software.
Why does the error continue after uninstalling SimplePass?
The uninstall may have left a startup shortcut, scheduled task, service, or related fingerprint component. Inspect Startup apps and Task Scheduler, then remove only entries clearly belonging to the old program.
Does the file’s version determine which copy I need?
Not by itself. Public records conflict on historical versions, sizes, and architectures. Use the package intended for the exact computer model and operating system rather than matching a number from an unfamiliar download page.
