“nlnvp.dll was not found” usually means a Symantec Lotus Notes integration is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or still referenced after removal. nlnvp.dll is a legacy Symantec application plug-in, not a Windows system file.
The safest repair is to restore or repair the Symantec Endpoint Protection installation that owns the file. If Lotus Notes is no longer used, remove the Lotus Notes Auto-Protect feature and its stale configuration instead.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The file disappeared after a security scan: check Symantec quarantine before reinstalling anything.
- The error began after upgrading Symantec or Lotus Notes: repair or modify Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Lotus Notes crashes or fails when opening attachments: repair the Lotus Notes protection component or update the Symantec installation.
- The file exists, but outside a Symantec or Lotus Notes folder: treat it as suspicious and scan the computer.
- Lotus Notes has been removed: remove the obsolete Symantec feature and stale Notes hook.
- Several Windows programs also fail: run the Windows component checks after repairing Symantec.
- The computer is managed by an organization: contact the Symantec Endpoint Protection administrator before changing features.
Do not begin by downloading nlnvp.dll from a DLL library or copying it into System32.

What is nlnvp.dll
nlnvp.dll, whose internal name is nLNVP, is associated with Symantec’s Lotus Notes email Auto-Protect integration. Symantec Endpoint Protection historically used it to scan attachments associated with Lotus Notes email.
Related names can include:
nLNVPNLNVP.DLLnlnhook.exenotesext.dllNSF_HooksEXTMGR_ADDINS
Lotus Notes can load the Symantec hook through entries in its configuration. If the DLL is removed while those entries remain, Lotus Notes may continue trying to load it at startup.
This is an application plug-in. It is not a Windows component, DirectX file, Microsoft runtime, or ordinary game DLL.

Check the file location before repairing it
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. Check its location and signature.
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Search the computer for
nlnvp.dll. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Note the complete path.
A historical Symantec Endpoint Protection path may resemble:
C:Program Files (x86)SymantecSymantec Endpoint Protection<version>Binnlnvp.dll
Older installations may place related files in a Lotus Notes directory. The exact path varies by product version and installation choices.
To check the signature:
- Right-click
nlnvp.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the file is located in a legitimate Symantec or Lotus Notes installation directory.
If the file is in a random download folder, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder, do not restore or execute it. Run a full security scan and investigate the file instead.
Fix 1: Check Symantec quarantine
A security product may have removed the file after detecting it as suspicious or as a false positive. Restore it only through the Symantec client after verifying its original location and signature.
- Open the Symantec Endpoint Protection client.
- Select View Quarantine.
- Look for a detection involving
nlnvp.dll. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the original path belongs to the Symantec or Lotus Notes installation.
- Check the file’s signature if the client provides that option.
- Restore the file only if you have confirmed that it is the legitimate Symantec component.
- Update Symantec definitions.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Lotus Notes again.
A successful repair means the missing-file message no longer appears and Lotus Notes can open normally.

If the detection remains suspicious, do not force a restoration. Report it as a possible false positive through your organization’s Symantec process or contact the Symantec administrator. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the file return.
Fix 2: Repair Symantec Endpoint Protection
Repairing the parent application is usually more reliable than replacing one DLL. It restores matching files, registry information, and product features together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst close Lotus Notes and related mail applications.
Repair through Installed apps
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on the installed build.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Make sure the Lotus Notes protection or email-scanning feature remains enabled if you still need it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Lotus Notes and open a known-safe attachment.
Repair through Control Panel
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the repair option is unavailable, use the exact Symantec Endpoint Protection installer that matches the installed product and operating system. Enterprise SEP packages may be obtained through the Broadcom enterprise download portal and may require an applicable support entitlement.
Do not use a loosely matching DLL from another computer. SEP packages distinguish between client architectures, and a file from a different product version may not match the installed hooks.
Fix 3: Modify or remove the Lotus Notes integration
If you still use Lotus Notes, repair or reinstall its Symantec protection component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Lotus Notes is no longer installed or required, remove the feature instead of leaving a broken hook behind.
- Open Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Select Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Choose Modify or Change.
- Locate the feature selection screen.
- Set the Lotus Notes Auto-Protect or email-scanning feature to unavailable.
- Finish the modification.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the startup error has stopped.
On a managed computer, the feature may be controlled by Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager policy. A local change can be reversed at the next policy update, so ask the administrator to change the Client Install Feature Set or Lotus Notes Auto-Protect policy.
Do not simply delete nlnvp.dll while leaving a Lotus Notes hook active. A remaining NSF_Hooks or EXTMGR_ADDINS entry can cause Lotus Notes to request the missing file at every startup.
Fix 4: Inspect the Lotus Notes hook
Use this step when the error appears every time Lotus Notes starts, or when the application crashes while opening attachments.

Look for evidence in the Lotus Notes configuration and Windows Event Viewer.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for events naming:
nlnvp.dll_unloadednlnhook.exenlnvp.dll- exception
0xc0000005 - Record the faulting application, faulting module, and full path.
A product-specific crash involving nlnhook.exe and nlnvp.dll_unloaded points toward the Symantec-Lotus Notes integration rather than a missing Microsoft runtime.
If the hook is stale, use the supported Symantec feature modification or product repair process. Removing an entry manually from notes.ini may not be permanent because Symantec can recreate it. Back up the Notes configuration before making any administrative change.
Fix 5: Reinstall the matching Symantec package
Use a reinstall when repair cannot restore the file or the installation is visibly incomplete.
- Record the installed SEP product name and version from Installed apps.
- Ask your administrator for the matching installation package, or obtain it from the official Broadcom enterprise download portal.
- Close Lotus Notes and other mail applications.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Choose the repair or installation option.
- Select the Lotus Notes component only if it is required.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that
nlnvp.dllis restored to the expected Symantec installation tree. - Start Lotus Notes and test its normal email functions.
Broadcom packages can be named in forms similar to:
Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_ProductVersion_Full_Installation_language.exe
Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_ProductVersion_All_Clients_language.zip
Do not assume that every current SEP package includes this legacy Lotus Notes plug-in. The installer must match the product deployment and the organization’s supported configuration.
If SEP will not uninstall
Use the normal Windows uninstall process first:
- Open Installed apps.
- Select Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart if requested.
- Install the approved replacement package.
CleanWipe is an escalation tool for failed removals, not the first response to a single missing DLL. On a managed computer, obtain administrator approval before using it because it can remove the security product and associated components.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components if other programs are failing
nlnvp.dll itself is a third-party Symantec file, so Windows repair commands are secondary. Use them when other Windows components also report corruption, or when the Symantec installer cannot run correctly.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM first:
text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run System File Checker:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Symantec repair.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and then repair SEP again. If it reports that it could not fix some files, repeat the process only after DISM completes successfully and review the command output.
When repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific Windows issues and show what needs repair; its repair function is provided by the full version, while reinstalling Symantec remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Check updates and drivers only when symptoms support it
Windows Update is not the normal solution for a missing Symantec plug-in. Use it when the incident also includes Windows component failures, SEP driver errors, or Device Manager warnings.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Lotus Notes again.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not replace a working driver merely because nlnvp.dll is missing. The driver path applies when the Event Viewer or Device Manager evidence points to a broader system or security-product problem.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf checking every device manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the affected hardware; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it should not replace the Symantec repair when the error is isolated to nlnvp.dll.
Fix 8: Consider System Restore as a last resort
Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a software installation, update, or driver change and the earlier restore point contains the working Symantec configuration.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish.
- Restart Windows and test Lotus Notes.
System Restore does not replace a missing file from an untrusted source. If the issue returns, repair or reinstall the correct SEP package.
Do not use random DLL replacements
Avoid DLL download sites and file copies supplied by unknown sources. A replacement may contain malware, belong to a different Symantec release, use a different architecture, or fail because the actual problem is a missing hook, registry entry, or incomplete SEP feature.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not:
- Copy
nlnvp.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32. - Copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Replace it with a file from another PC.
- Run
regsvr32blindly. - Install DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET solely because the filename ends in
.dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that are designed to self-register as COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that nlnvp.dll should be repaired by registering it manually. If another error specifically names MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or a Microsoft runtime, repair the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ package instead of treating that as an nlnvp.dll problem.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Historical Lotus Notes and SEP deployments often used older application components, but the actual architecture must be checked on the installed file and matched to the SEP package. Do not rely on a public file listing or on the filename alone.
Use the installer intended for the operating system and the installed SEP product. Do not mix a 32-bit component from one release with a 64-bit client from another release.
If the installer reports an architecture mismatch, stop and obtain the correct package from the SEP administrator or official Broadcom enterprise download route.

The repair is complete when:
- Windows no longer reports that
nlnvp.dllis missing. - The file is present in the expected Symantec or Lotus Notes directory.
- The file has a valid publisher signature where one is supplied.
- Lotus Notes starts without a hook error.
- Attachments open without an immediate crash.

If the error remains, record the exact message, executable path, DLL path, SEP version, Lotus Notes version, Event Viewer details, quarantine status, and whether the device is managed. Give that information to your SEP administrator or vendor support team.
FAQ
Is nlnvp.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Symantec application plug-in associated with Lotus Notes email Auto-Protect.
Should I download nlnvp.dll?
No. Repair or reinstall the Symantec product that supplied it. An arbitrary replacement can be malicious, mismatched, or ineffective.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The DLL belongs in the application’s installation structure. Copying it to a Windows directory can create loading and security problems.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Visual C++ repair applies when the error names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP or VCRUNTIME. It is not a general solution for nlnvp.dll.
Can I run regsvr32 nlnvp.dll?
Do not do so unless official product documentation specifically identifies the file as a self-registering component. The safer path is SEP repair or feature modification.
What if Lotus Notes is no longer installed?
Remove the Lotus Notes Auto-Protect feature through the supported SEP modification process and clear the obsolete integration through the product workflow. Do not only delete the DLL.
What if Symantec recreates the error after every reboot?
Check for surviving NSF_Hooks or EXTMGR_ADDINS references, then repair or remove the SEP Lotus Notes feature. A managed policy may also be restoring the configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if the file is outside a Symantec folder?
Do not assume it is safe. Check its signature and scan the computer. A copy in an unrelated directory may indicate an untrusted replacement or DLL hijacking risk.
What if none of these fixes work?
Escalate with the exact error, full file path, SEP and Lotus Notes versions, Event Viewer record, quarantine status, and management status. That evidence identifies whether the remaining problem is a damaged installation, compatibility defect, stale hook, or policy-controlled configuration.
