If nlsdata0414.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is reported as not designed to run on Windows, do not download a replacement DLL first. Trace the path shown in the error, then repair Windows or the Microsoft application that owns that copy.
Which fix applies to you
Use this checklist before changing anything:
- The error names a Windows folder: Check Windows Security, install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The error names an Office, SharePoint, or other Microsoft program folder: Repair or reinstall that application after checking Windows components.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: Review Windows Security Protection history. Restore it only when its path, signature, and security status are trusted.
- The error began immediately after an update or installation: Restart, complete Windows Update, and run the Windows repair commands.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows”: Suspect corruption, an incomplete update, a mismatched architecture, or a damaged application copy.
- The problem remains after repair: Confirm the exact path and use System Restore or Windows recovery rather than copying a DLL from an unofficial site.
What nlsdata0414.dll is
nlsdata0414.dll is a genuine Microsoft DLL associated with Windows. Its recorded description is “Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code.” It belongs to Windows language and natural-language components, not to a general Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable.
The 0414 portion resembles a locale identifier, but it does not by itself prove which display language is active on your computer. Treat the filename as an identifier, not as a complete diagnosis.

Public file inventories show that builds can differ by Windows release and architecture. Reported examples include 32-bit versions 6.2.9200.16384, 6.1.7600.16385, and 6.0.6001.18000, plus a 64-bit 6.0.6001.18000 version. Other inventories report additional Windows builds, and Microsoft documentation also lists an nlsdata0414.dll copy in a SharePoint 2010 hotfix.
That matters because there is no safe “latest DLL” that works everywhere. The correct file must match the Windows build or Microsoft product that owns it.
Find the copy that is failing
The path is more useful than the filename.
- Read the complete error message and note any folder displayed.
- If no path is shown, open File Explorer.
- Search for
nlsdata0414.dllon the drive where Windows or the affected application is installed. - Right-click each result and select Properties.
- Check the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Note whether the file is under a Windows system directory or inside an application directory.
Do not assume that a file under System32 is always the one being loaded. A Microsoft application can carry its own copy, and a 32-bit process may use a different system-file view from a 64-bit process.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit processes. Do not swap files between these folders manually.

An antivirus quarantine, incomplete servicing operation, or pending update can make a valid DLL unavailable.
Review Protection history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
nlsdata0414.dllor the application named in the error. - Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when you recognize the original path, the file belongs to a trusted Microsoft installation, and a current scan supports that decision. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can make it active again.
For an application-owned copy, repairing or reinstalling the application is safer than restoring an isolated DLL by itself.
Install Windows updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not require it.
- Test the affected program again.
If the error began after an interrupted update, complete the update process before running repair commands.

This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows-owned copy. DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a repair source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged or missing copies.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
A successful result is an SFC message stating that it found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. The practical test is that the original program starts without the DLL error.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, do not substitute a downloaded DLL. Microsoft documents using a genuine, matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a valid source matching your Windows edition and build. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again and restart.

If SFC says it found corruption but could not repair everything, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
The log can identify which files remain damaged. If servicing still fails, continue to Windows recovery rather than manually overwriting system files.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM makes the cause unclear, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 3: Repair the application named in the error
If the path points to an Office, SharePoint, or another Microsoft product directory, Windows repair may not replace that private copy.
Repair a Windows app
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve the problem, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
Repair traditional desktop software
- Open Start.
- Search for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. For SharePoint, Office, or another managed Microsoft product, use the organization’s approved installation source.
The correct result is that the application restores its own files and starts without requesting nlsdata0414.dll. Do not copy a Windows DLL into the application folder unless the product’s official recovery process specifically requires a verified matching file.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file mismatch errors
A wrong-architecture or mismatched-build file can produce messages such as:
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlsdata0414.dll was not found.”
- “nlsdata0414.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Module not found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies.
Check the following:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Review System type to identify whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit, if its documentation provides that information.
- Compare the failing path with the location of the application’s other binaries.
- Do not move files between
System32,SysWOW64, and application directories.
If the file properties show an unexpected publisher, missing signature, or a location unrelated to Windows or the named Microsoft product, remove the questionable copy only through the owning application’s installer or an approved security workflow.
Fix 5: Update drivers only when the wider symptom points there
A driver update is not the normal fix for nlsdata0414.dll. Use Device Manager only when the same failure is accompanied by a malfunctioning device, a yellow warning icon, display problems, storage errors, or a recently changed hardware driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 is not the answer
Do not run this command reflexively:
regsvr32 nlsdata0414.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point named DllRegisterServer. The available export analysis for nlsdata0414.dll identifies LangDataCall, not DllRegisterServer. Registering this file is therefore not an appropriate repair and may only create another error message.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known change
Use System Restore when the error started directly after a driver installation, update, cleanup, or application change and the earlier repair steps did not help.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the restore.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery options or matching installation media as the final escalation.
What not to do
- Do not download
nlsdata0414.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not overwrite
System32orSysWOW64manually. - Do not use a 32-bit file in a 64-bit application directory, or the reverse.
- Do not disable antivirus to force an unverified file into place.
- Do not assume a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall is the definitive fix.
- Do not treat every version as interchangeable.
- Do not whitelist a suspicious copy merely because an application requests it.
Unofficial DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, match the wrong Windows build, or leave the underlying component-store problem untouched. Safe sources are Windows Update, Windows recovery media matching the installation, and the official installer or repair process for the application named in the error.
Prevention
Keep Windows and the affected Microsoft application updated. Leave real-time security protection enabled, investigate quarantine events before restoring files, and avoid registry cleaners or “DLL fixer” utilities that remove files without identifying their owner.
If the problem returns after DISM, SFC, and application repair, record the exact path, Windows edition and build, file signature status, and whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit. That information identifies the correct repair path far more reliably than the filename alone.

Is nlsdata0414.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft file is a legitimate Windows component. Safety depends on the file’s path, signature, and integrity. A file with the same name in an unexpected directory requires investigation.
Is nlsdata0414.dll part of Windows?
It is associated with Windows language and natural-language components. The same filename can also appear in a Microsoft product package, including documented SharePoint content, so confirm the path before repairing it.
Should I download nlsdata0414.dll?
No. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or repair the application that owns the file. Use only a matching official installation source in a controlled recovery situation.
Why does the message say the module could not be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or application. A visible file does not prove that every dependency, architecture, and version matches.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will reinstalling a runtime fix it?
There is no verified basis for treating this file as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Identify the owner first, then repair Windows or the named application.
What if the error remains after SFC and DISM?
Check the exact path, Protection history, file signature, application architecture, and pending updates. Then repair or reinstall the owning application, use System Restore, or proceed to Windows recovery with matching installation media.
