If ciwincng32.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start Bitvise SSH Client or another application built with Bitvise FlowSsh. The safest fix is to identify that application, then repair or reinstall it from its official installer rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you know:
- The error names Bitvise SSH Client: reinstall or upgrade Bitvise from its official installer.
- The error appears in another SSH, file-transfer, or security application: repair or reinstall that application from its vendor.
- The file was quarantined: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists but will not load: check whether the application and its FlowSsh files use matching x86 or x64 architecture.
- The error began after extracting or copying program files: obtain a complete installer package again.
- Several Windows programs are failing: run DISM and SFC after checking the affected application.
- The file is in
%TEMP%,%AppData%, or an unexpected folder: treat it as a possible malware issue, not a normal missing-DLL problem.
What ciwincng32.dll actually is
ciwincng32.dll is a third-party application DLL. It is the 32-bit Windows CNG cryptography provider used by Bitvise’s FlowSsh library. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX component, or ordinary hardware driver.
Bitvise documents this dependency chain:
- 32-bit application:
FlowSshC32.dllloadsCiWinCng32.dll - 64-bit application:
FlowSshC64.dllloadsCiWinCng64.dll
The matching files normally sit beside the application’s other FlowSsh files in the Bitvise installation directory or the vendor application directory. They should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The name alone does not identify the owning application. Bitvise SSH Client is a verified user, but another vendor can redistribute FlowSsh in its own software.
Error messages you may see
Windows may display any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because ciwincng32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting ciwincng32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading ciwincng32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because ciwincng32.dll was not found.”
- “ciwincng32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Failed to load cryptographic provider: CiWinCng32.dll.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. The DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, blocked, corrupted, or the wrong architecture. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than replacing one file.
Fix 1: Reinstall the application that owns the DLL
This is the most likely solution for Bitvise and FlowSsh-based software.
If the caller is Bitvise SSH Client
- Close Bitvise and any program that uses its SSH components.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for Bitvise SSH Client.
- Note the installation location if it is shown.
- Download the current Bitvise SSH Client installer from Bitvise’s official website.
- Before running it, open the installer’s Properties, select Digital Signatures, and confirm that it has a valid Bitvise signature. Do not run an installer that lacks the expected valid signature.
- Run the installer as an administrator. Right-click it, select Show more options if necessary, and choose Run as administrator.
- Allow the installer to detect the existing installation and complete the upgrade or replacement.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start Bitvise again.
Bitvise’s installer is designed to detect an existing installation, remove the previous program files, and preserve settings during an upgrade.
If another application shows the error
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the program that displays the error.
- If its entry has Advanced options, open it and choose Repair if available.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the actual vendor’s official website or use the original signed installation package.
- Install the program again.
- Start it and confirm that the error no longer appears.
Do not copy ciwincng32.dll from a different computer or from a random DLL website. That file may be malicious, unsigned, intended for a different application version, or built for the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking replacement may leave the rest of the FlowSsh dependency chain incomplete.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if the application opens without the DLL message and can perform the operation that previously failed. Also check the application directory and confirm that the installer restored the related FlowSsh files together, rather than leaving only a manually copied DLL.
Fix 2: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The 32 in ciwincng32.dll refers to the DLL’s architecture. It does not mean that Windows itself must be 32-bit.
A 32-bit Bitvise or FlowSsh application running on 64-bit Windows still needs:
FlowSshC32.dll
CiWinCng32.dll
A 64-bit application needs the matching 64-bit chain:
FlowSshC64.dll
CiWinCng64.dll
Do not mix FlowSshC32.dll with CiWinCng64.dll, or the reverse.
Identify the application architecture
Use the application’s own documentation or installer information first. You can also check the installation folder:

C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.
These folder locations are clues, not absolute proof. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program can run normally from another folder.

- Start the affected application.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if Windows provides that column.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the application is 32-bit, reinstall its 32-bit package and dependencies. Installing only a 64-bit runtime will not satisfy an x86 application.
Fix 3: Restore a file quarantined by antivirus
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application file after an update or a reputation change. A malware sample has also used the filename CiWinCng32.dll, so do not restore the file based on its name alone.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
ciwincng32.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect the detected path.
- Compare the path with the known Bitvise or vendor application directory.
- Check whether the original application is installed and whether its installer is digitally signed.
- If the file is clearly part of a legitimate installation, select Actions and use Restore or Allow on device, where available.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward if other files were removed.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Do not restore the file if it came from %TEMP%, %AppData%, a random download directory, or an unsigned unexpected system location. Isolate the computer from sensitive networks and investigate for malware instead.
Fix 4: Install the required Visual C++ runtime when applicable
Native FlowSsh components do not generally have the same runtime requirement as FlowSshNet applications. Bitvise documents that signed FlowSshNet binaries may require the matching Visual C++ Redistributable package.

If the affected program is a FlowSshNet application:
- Confirm whether the vendor supplied
vcredist_x86.exeorvcredist_x64.exe. - Use the package supplied by that vendor when possible.
- If the vendor directs you to Microsoft’s package, install the architecture matching the application.
- Restart the application.
Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads provide separate x86 and x64 packages. Installing x64 alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application.
A missing Visual C++ runtime can produce a loader error even when ciwincng32.dll is present. If reinstalling the complete application does not help, ask the vendor which runtime its build requires rather than installing unrelated runtime files.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Use this step when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows updates are damaged, or you have other signs of protected system-file corruption. ciwincng32.dll is normally an application file, so SFC will not usually recreate it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Save your work and close open programs.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not repair everything, restart Windows and repeat the application reinstall rather than placing a DLL in a system folder.
When you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and cannot tell which repair changed the result, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its repair action is handled by the full version, while reinstalling the Bitvise or FlowSsh application remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

ciwincng32.dll is not an ordinary device driver, so Device Manager is not the primary repair tool. Use it only if the same failure began with a broader network adapter, storage, or security-device problem.

Do not uninstall an unknown device just because a DLL error appears. If Windows identifies a specific driver problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation is performed by the full version, and the application vendor’s installer is still the correct fix for a missing ciwincng32.dll.

Do not run:
regsvr32 ciwincng32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM components. Bitvise documents CiWinCng32.dll as a normal runtime dependency loaded by FlowSsh, not as a COM server.
Registering it will usually produce an error or change nothing. It cannot repair missing companion files, architecture mismatches, quarantine damage, or a missing dependency.
What to do if reinstalling still fails
Collect these details before contacting the application vendor:
- The complete error text
- The executable that produces it
- The executable’s full path
- The path of any
ciwincng32.dllfile found - The application version
- The Windows version
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file’s digital signature status
- Any antivirus detection name
- Whether the problem began after an upgrade, extraction, uninstall, or quarantine event
For a developer using FlowSsh, redistribute the complete required DLL set beside the executable. Match FlowSshC32.dll with CiWinCng32.dll, or FlowSshC64.dll with CiWinCng64.dll. FlowSshNet applications may also require the matching Visual C++ Redistributable.
If the file is present but the loader still reports a missing module, use a dependency inspection tool to identify the first missing dependency. For a suspicious copy, do not rely on the filename or an unverified hash. Confirm the installation path, publisher signature, and provenance, then scan or reinstall from the legitimate vendor.
FAQ
Is ciwincng32.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application DLL associated with Bitvise FlowSsh and software that redistributes that library.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the rest of the application. Reinstall the owning program from its official vendor.
Does 64-bit Windows need ciwincng32.dll?
It can. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows still requires the 32-bit DLL and matching FlowSshC32.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The DLL belongs beside the application files. System-folder copying can create mismatches and makes later troubleshooting harder.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of ciwincng32.dll may be missing, blocked, corrupted, or built for another architecture. A complete reinstall is safer than replacing the named file.
Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while ciwincng32.dll normally belongs to a third-party application.
What if the file is signed but located in an unusual folder?
A valid signature is useful but not sufficient. Confirm that the file belongs to an installed Bitvise or FlowSsh-based application and investigate unexpected locations such as %TEMP% or %AppData%.
