“The program can’t start because nlslexicons000f.dll is missing”
The nlslexicons000f.dll error usually points to a damaged or missing Windows Natural Language component, not a missing game runtime. The safest fix is to repair Windows itself rather than download the DLL from a random website.
You may also see:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlslexicons000f.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting nlslexicons000f.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading nlslexicons000f.dll.”
- “nlslexicons000f.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you find:
- The file is missing from Windows and several programs show errors: Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The problem began after adding or changing a language: Repair the relevant language pack or optional language feature.
- Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: Verify its original Windows path and signature before restoring it.
- Only one older program or game fails: Repair or reinstall that program, then verify its files through its launcher.
- The file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows: Suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a DLL copied from another Windows build.
- The file exists under an unusual folder: Treat it as suspicious and scan the system rather than copying it into
System32. - DISM or SFC cannot repair Windows: Use a matching installation source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair.
What nlslexicons000f.dll actually is
nlslexicons000f.dll is a Microsoft Windows Natural Language resource. Microsoft’s Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file manifest places it in the Microsoft-Windows-NaturalLanguage6 component alongside NaturalLanguage6.dll, Nlsdata files, and other Nlslexicons files. See Microsoft’s Windows file manifest.

These files support Windows language and text-processing features. The 000f portion resembles a numeric locale identifier, but it should not be treated as proof of one specific language on every Windows build. Microsoft explains the general role of locale identifiers.

System32, SysWOW64, and Windows architecture
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32normally contains 64-bit system files.C:WindowsSysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
The names are counterintuitive. A 64-bit Windows installation can need both copies because it runs both 64-bit and 32-bit software. A 32-bit application may therefore request a 32-bit Windows component through the 32-bit system path.
Microsoft’s published manifest lists both x86 and x64 copies of this file for the documented Windows generation. It records version 6.0.6000.16386 and a size of 5,654,528 bytes for each listed architecture. That historical manifest does not establish a complete version history for modern Windows.
Do not replace a missing file with a copy from another computer. Even a file with the same name can have the wrong architecture, build, language, or dependencies.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted update or language-feature installation can leave Windows components incomplete.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected program again.
If the error started immediately after a Windows update, check Windows Update > Update history for failed installations. Complete the update process before moving to component repair.
Do not begin by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver. Those packages may fix other DLL errors, but they are not the verified owner of this Windows Natural Language component.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the primary repair route when the file is missing, corrupted, or present but fails its integrity check. DISM repairs the Windows component store first; SFC then uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
Microsoft gives the same DISM-before-SFC order in its system file repair guidance.
A successful result usually says that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupt files. If the program starts normally after the restart, the Windows component was the likely cause.
Running these commands manually is free, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when repair loops fail. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, while manual DISM and SFC remain the supported first-line path.
Target the file with SFC
If the file is visible in the expected Windows directory but may be damaged, you can target it directly:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32nlslexicons000f.dll
Use the actual path and architecture on your installation. For a 32-bit copy under the 32-bit system directory, use:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSysWOW64nlslexicons000f.dll
The command must be run from an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft documents the file-specific syntax in its SFC command reference.
3. Repair the Windows language feature
Because this DLL belongs to Natural Language components, check language installation if the problem began after changing display or input languages.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Review the installed languages.
- Select Add a language if the required language is missing.
- Choose the language and select Next.
- Install the language pack and any relevant optional language features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Microsoft’s language-pack instructions describe this supported installation path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstalling a language does not guarantee that it will restore this exact filename on every Windows version. The result depends on the installed build, architecture, and component package. Avoid enabling random entries under Turn Windows features on or off as a substitute for repairing Windows.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate system file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nlslexicons000f.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its original file path and action.
Only consider Restore or Allow on device if the file was located in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature and provenance can be verified. Do not restore a same-named file from an application folder simply because the filename matches.
Microsoft explains quarantine events and restore behavior in its Protection History documentation. Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine may no longer appear.

5. Repair the program that reports the error
A missing-module message can be caused by a damaged application installation even when the named DLL belongs to Windows. The program may have an incorrect dependency, an outdated launcher, or a damaged local configuration.
First identify the caller:
- Note the program name in the error window.
- Check whether the error appears only when launching that program.
- Look in Task Manager for the executable name.
- Right-click its shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target.
- Check the program’s installation folder for recently changed or missing files.
Then use the program’s supported repair path:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the software vendor’s official source.
- Reinstall the program and test it before adding unofficial DLL files.
For a game, open its launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files. This replaces damaged game files without altering Windows system directories.
If reinstalling the program fixes the error, the program was likely damaged or was requesting the component incorrectly. It does not prove that the DLL itself belonged to that program.

Do not run:
regsvr32 nlslexicons000f.dll
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-file repair command. A language data or resource DLL generally is not a self-registering COM component.
Microsoft documents the utility’s purpose in its regsvr32 command reference. Use it only when Microsoft or the software vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL.
7. Check for architecture and dependency problems
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found nlslexicons000f.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Architecture problems are also common:
- A 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit DLL as a substitute.
- A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute.
- A DLL from another Windows build may produce “not designed to run on Windows” or an entry-point error.
- Copying a file beside an executable can change DLL search behavior without repairing Windows.
Confirm the file’s location, digital signature, and Windows architecture. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when available. A genuine system file should be located in a normal Windows system directory, not a temporary folder, download directory, or unrelated game folder.
8. If DISM or SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them, do not keep running random DLL installers.
First retry DISM while connected to Windows Update. If DISM cannot obtain repair files, use matching installation media:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a Windows installation source matching your edition, build, language, and architecture. Microsoft explains this process in its DISM repair documentation.
If repair still fails:
- Review
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. - Try System Restore from a restore point created before the error.
- Use Windows recovery options.
- Perform an in-place repair using matching Windows installation media.
System Restore is not guaranteed to be enabled or to contain this specific file. Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance explains the available recovery paths.

Should you reinstall drivers
Usually, no. nlslexicons000f.dll is not established as a graphics, audio, chipset, or controller driver file. Check Device Manager only if the error appeared alongside a device failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Prefer Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official driver.
Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale can waste time when the real fault is Windows component corruption. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify candidates; its full version installs updates, but a driver update is not the definitive fix when Windows itself is missing this language component.
FAQ
Is nlslexicons000f.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows file when it is restored through Windows servicing and located in the appropriate Windows system directory. A same-named file elsewhere is not automatically trustworthy.
Should I download nlslexicons000f.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Windows build. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, language features, matching installation media, or the affected program’s official installer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Not according to the available Microsoft component evidence. Reinstall those runtimes only when the error names a dependency from them.
Why does the message say the specified module was not found when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or damaged component. Architecture mismatches and incompatible builds can produce the same message.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Avoid it. The other computer may use a different Windows build, language, architecture, or component state. Restore the file through supported Windows repair instead.
What if only one game reports the error?
Repair or reinstall that game, and use its launcher’s file verification feature. If Windows repair also finds corruption, complete DISM and SFC before reinstalling the game again.
