nmchat.dll is the Microsoft NetMeeting Chat component, and it belongs to the old Windows NetMeeting application. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that nmchat.dll is missing, the real problem is usually an obsolete application or incomplete migration, not a missing modern runtime.
The safest solution is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original installation media. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL from a random website.

The filename is legitimate, but that does not prove that every file named nmchat.dll is safe. A copy found in an unrelated modern application folder should be checked by its location, digital signature, antivirus status, and the program that loaded it.
What the error may say
Reported variants include:
nmchat.dll is missingThe program can't start because nmchat.dll is missing from your computer. This application failed to start because nmchat.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.Error loading nmchat.dll. The specified module could not be found.nmchat.dll could not be loadedCannot register nmchat.dllnmchat.dll is corruptedCannot find nmchat.dll
These are commonly reported error variants, not necessarily official Microsoft wording. The important information is the executable named in the dialog and the application you were trying to start.
First, identify the program requesting the file
Before repairing Windows, determine whether the request comes from NetMeeting, another old application, a startup entry, or something suspicious.
1. Record the complete error
Take note of:
- The exact error text
- The name of the executable, if shown
- The application that was starting
- Whether the message appeared during startup or only when opening a particular program
- The folder path shown in the error, if any
If the message appears when launching an old conferencing or collaboration program, that program is the most likely caller.
2. Check the application folder
Open File Explorer and inspect the installation folder for the affected program. Common locations include:
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
Do not copy a replacement DLL into the folder yet. First determine whether the program contains other NetMeeting files, whether the folder is incomplete, and whether the application was recently moved from another computer.
A program copied manually between computers may be missing several supporting files even if only nmchat.dll is reported.
3. Check Event Viewer
Event Viewer may identify the process or module involved:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Read the General and Details tabs.
Search for the affected executable or for an application error mentioning nmchat.dll. If Event Viewer names a modern program that has no historical connection to NetMeeting, treat the request as an application-specific problem rather than proof that Windows itself needs the DLL.
4. Check Windows Security
The file may have been removed by antivirus protection:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and expand any item associated with the affected program.
Inspect the detected file path before restoring anything. Restore a file only when it came from the original trusted application and its location makes sense. If Windows Security repeatedly detects it, do not create an exclusion simply to suppress the warning.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely fix when a legacy program expects nmchat.dll.
Use Windows’ repair option when available
For a program installed through a package that supports repair:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
The repair option is not available for every desktop program. If the program has no repair option, use its original installer and select Repair, Change, or a similar maintenance choice.
Use Control Panel for traditional desktop software
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the program again.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the complete application from its original, trusted installation media. Reinstalling the parent program is safer than replacing one DLL because the installer can restore related files, registry entries, dependencies, and the correct architecture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For NetMeeting itself
Modern Windows does not provide NetMeeting as a supported current application. You should not expect to find it under Turn Windows features on or off.
On a genuine older Windows installation, use matching original Windows installation media or the original NetMeeting installer, if you have a lawful and trustworthy copy. The media should match the operating-system release rather than coming from a different Windows version.
After reinstalling, test the program that originally produced the error. If the application starts without the message, the repair worked. If the same error remains, identify the executable again because another program may be making the request.
Fix 2: Restore the original file from trusted media
If the problem occurs on an older Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 computer where NetMeeting was part of the installation, restore the complete component from matching installation media rather than downloading nmchat.dll separately.
The exact process depends on the Windows release and how NetMeeting was installed. Use the operating system’s original setup or component-repair process, or reinstall NetMeeting through the original application installer.
Do not use a file from a different release merely because the filename matches. A legacy DLL may depend on other files, exports, registry information, or system components from its original release.
A correct restoration should result in:
- The file being placed in the application’s expected location
- The parent program launching normally
- No new dependency or architecture errors
- No antivirus detection of the restored file
If the message changes to “the specified module could not be found,” nmchat.dll may now exist while one of its dependencies is missing. That is a reason to repair the complete application, not to keep adding unrelated DLLs.
Fix 3: Use System Restore after a known change
System Restore can help if the file disappeared immediately after a software installation, cleanup operation, update, or configuration change.

- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore generally keeps personal files, but applications, drivers, settings, and later system changes may be reverted. If no suitable restore point exists, use the application’s original installer or another supported recovery method instead.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when the error occurs on a real legacy Windows installation and you have reason to suspect Windows system-file corruption. They are not guaranteed to restore a NetMeeting file on Windows 10 or Windows 11, because current Windows versions do not normally include NetMeeting.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, run the commands in this order:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files and repairs them when possible. If the commands report that no integrity violations were found, the missing file is more likely to belong to the old application than to the current Windows installation.

Repeating these commands without identifying the calling application will not repair a missing third-party component. Outbyte PC Repair can show what the scan finds and handle the repair with its full version, but reinstalling the specific legacy program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the file.
Fix 5: Confirm that Windows is not blocking a quarantined file
If Protection History shows that Defender removed nmchat.dll, first confirm all of the following:
- The detection path belongs to the expected application
- The file came from original installation media or a trusted installer
- The parent program genuinely needs NetMeeting
- The file has not been copied from an unofficial DLL repository
- The application and file have been scanned for additional threats
To inspect the item:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Select the detection.
- Expand its details.
- Review the path and detection name.
Restore the file only if you have verified its source and identity. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. A repeated detection should be investigated as a security issue, not bypassed with an antivirus exclusion.
If the file was removed from an old application, reinstalling that application from trusted media is preferable to restoring an isolated copy.
Fix 6: Handle a modern Windows installation correctly
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, nmchat.dll is not a normal current system dependency. If a modern computer reports it missing, one of these situations is more likely:
- An obsolete program was installed
- A legacy installer was incomplete
- An old disk image was migrated imperfectly
- A startup entry still points to removed software
- A program was copied without its supporting files
- A cleanup tool deleted part of an old application
- A modern program is making an incorrect legacy request
- Malware or a damaged installation is involved
Do not force NetMeeting into current Windows system folders. Instead:
- Identify the executable producing the message.
- Update, repair, or replace that program.
- Remove an obsolete startup entry if the original program has already been uninstalled.
- Use a supported alternative application where possible.
- If the old program is essential, run it in a suitably isolated legacy environment rather than modifying current Windows system directories.
If an old application requires a 32-bit NetMeeting component, a random 64-bit DLL is not an interchangeable replacement. Even a 32-bit copy from another Windows release may have incompatible dependencies.
Recommended Free Tools
Driver troubleshooting is usually not relevant
nmchat.dll is an application component, not a graphics, audio, storage, or network driver. Updating Device Manager entries is therefore not a normal fix for this particular error.
If the calling application also reports hardware failures, update the affected device separately:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
For a manufacturer-provided driver, download it from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page. Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error contains the word “module.”
Manually hunting through many driver versions can be time-consuming when a separate hardware problem is present. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale, while installation through its full version handles the update; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns nmchat.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why regsvr32 usually does not fix nmchat.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing or unloaded DLL.
Running:
regsvr32 nmchat.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove that nmchat.dll is corrupt. It may simply mean that the file is not designed for COM registration.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the original application documentation explicitly requires registration. Do not run the 64-bit tool against a 32-bit file, or the 32-bit tool against a 64-bit file. For this legacy component, repairing or reinstalling the parent application is the appropriate approach.
What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a familiar filename
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- A modified or unsigned binary
- A copy that does not match the calling application
Even a clean file may not solve the underlying problem if the application is missing several related files.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not place nmchat.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
because a website instructed you to do so. This can create version conflicts, DLL hijacking opportunities, and system instability. Application DLLs should normally be restored by the installer that owns them.
Do not assume every DLL error needs a runtime package
There is no evidence that nmchat.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET library. Installing multiple redistributables will not normally restore a missing NetMeeting component.
Do not disable antivirus protection
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, investigate its source and the parent application. Do not disable protection or create an exclusion merely to make the error disappear.
If the error still remains

FAQ
Is nmchat.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. nmchat.dll corresponds to the NetMeeting Chat component from Microsoft NetMeeting. A particular copy should still be checked for a valid Microsoft signature, a sensible location, and antivirus safety.
Does Windows 11 include nmchat.dll?
No current Windows installation should be assumed to include it. NetMeeting is legacy software and was not included beginning with Windows Vista or Windows 7. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not provide it as a supported current component.
Should I download nmchat.dll separately?
No. Restore it through the original NetMeeting or legacy application installer, or from matching original Windows installation media. An isolated download can be unsafe or incompatible.
Will SFC restore nmchat.dll?
Only if the file is part of the Windows installation being repaired and the component store contains the correct protected copy. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, SFC is unlikely to restore a legacy NetMeeting application file.
Should I register nmchat.dll with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points. It is not a general repair command, and an entry-point error does not necessarily indicate corruption.
Why does the error say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency of nmchat.dll may be missing, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. Repair the complete application instead of copying additional DLLs into Windows folders.
Can I run the old program on Windows 10 or 11?
That depends on the program. If it cannot run reliably on current Windows, use a supported replacement or an appropriately isolated legacy environment. Do not force old NetMeeting files into current system directories.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the calling executable and repair or reinstall the complete legacy application from trusted original media. If the application is no longer needed, remove it and its obsolete startup entries rather than replacing its missing DLL.
