Build a glass-walled habitat over a deep-water drop, turn a mountain peak into an observatory, or make your freighter feel like a home between expeditions. These 10 No Man’s Sky base ideas each pair a setting with a visual hook and a reason to build there. Pick one that fits the parts and resources you have unlocked, then shape it around the way you like to play.
1. Underwater research habitat
Set a compact glass habitat near a deep-water drop, with a clear route from the shore to the entrance. A central observation room makes the water and its changing views the main feature; smaller side rooms can suggest research bays or storage.
Hello Games’ NEXT update describes building bases underwater as well as on land. Treat the research-station theme as role-play and visual design, not a promise of a special underwater mechanic.
2. Mountain observatory
Find a high vantage point and make the view the reason for the build. A small observation deck or glass-fronted room can anchor the structure, with a landing area and practical rooms tucked behind it. Keep the outline low enough that the peak, nearby ridges, or sky remain the focus.

- An entire universe to explore on the go in the palm of your hands
- For the first time ever, PlayStation 5 physical edition as well as Nintendo Switch (physical & digital)
The NEXT update specifically describes base building high in mountains, making this a natural choice when the terrain itself is the attraction.
3. Freighter expedition home
Give your freighter a recognizable central room, then arrange work areas around it. Use a consistent visual theme so the base feels like a home you return to rather than a collection of disconnected rooms. You can style it as a practical staging point, a captain’s quarters, or a crew hub.
Hello Games documents freighter base building in both its NEXT update and Foundation update. The mobile-home concept is a layout idea; the sources establish customization, not a unique expedition bonus.
4. Hydroponic greenhouse
Make crops the visual center of the base. Arrange growing areas in orderly rows or around a bright central hall, then use paths and windows to make the planted rooms easy to see. A greenhouse works as a calm retreat as well as a practical place to focus on crop cultivation.

- Region 2 (AUS) or 4 (EUR) Required for DLC Redemption or Purchases
- Playstation VR Compatible (optional)
The Foundation update mentions hydroponics labs, so this theme can draw on in-game crop-growing parts rather than generic garden décor.
5. Settlement landmark
Build your concept around a settlement’s central plaza, or give its buildings a coherent architectural palette that makes the town feel like one place. Think of the result as a recognizable civic center: a focal point that helps the settlement read as a community rather than scattered structures.
There is an important distinction: Frontiers describes players becoming settlement overseers and constructing buildings as a settlement grows. Settlement development is a managed town feature, not simply another way to freely place a custom base.
6. Orbital clubhouse
Turn a space station into a themed destination for social visits. Choose a strong visual identity—a quiet lounge, an expedition briefing room, or a colorful gathering spot—and make the main area easy to navigate. A clear entrance-to-center route helps visitors understand the theme as soon as they arrive.

Hello Games’ Cosmos update and release log describe space-station ownership and space-base construction. The clubhouse angle is a creative way to use those settings, not a claim that a station build unlocks a social feature.
7. Focused space-base outpost
Instead of trying to make a huge station, build a small outpost with one clear job: a quiet stop, a display space, or a launch point for your next project. Give it a simple silhouette and a single memorable room so it feels intentional even at a compact scale.
The Cosmos update describes space-base construction among its newer space settings. This idea keeps that possibility focused: think small station first, grand complex only if the project grows naturally.
8. Scenic planet-side retreat
Let a striking terrain feature dictate the footprint. A base beside a dramatic ridge, unusual coastline, or other memorable landscape can feel more distinctive than a larger structure on an ordinary patch of ground. Use a small central shelter and a viewing platform so the scenery remains part of the experience.

The NEXT update describes planetary construction in varied locations. The specific landmark is your choice; the design principle is to build with the terrain rather than flattening its character with an oversized footprint.
9. Visitor-friendly showcase
Design a base for someone arriving with no idea where to go. Give the entrance a clear view of the main room, use a legible route between spaces, and make one visual theme carry through the build. A simple loop—from arrival area to centerpiece and back—can make a showcase feel welcoming without requiring a large footprint.
This is a design recommendation, not a special game mechanic. It is most useful when you want other players to understand the build quickly and remember one strong feature.

Organize the base around the loop you enjoy most. A farming-focused player might center the layout on growing areas; someone preparing for expeditions might favor a clear staging room and organized work zones. Keep the most-used area central and let decorative rooms support, rather than obscure, that purpose.

Hello Games documents customizable planetary and freighter bases in the NEXT update and crop-oriented hydroponics labs in the Foundation update. The particular mission-hub layout is a creative recommendation, not a separately documented feature.
How to choose your next build
Start by deciding what should make the base worth returning to. The same idea can be a compact outpost or a larger home, depending on the setting and how much time you want to spend building.
| Choose by | Good fit | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Pick the place that gives the build its identity. | Planet: mountain observatory or scenic retreat; underwater: research habitat; freighter: expedition home; settlement: civic landmark; space: orbital clubhouse or outpost. |
| Purpose | Decide what you want to do or imagine doing there. | Crops: greenhouse; exploration preparation: mission hub; visits: showcase or clubhouse; scenery: observatory or retreat. |
| Scope | Match the project to the time, resources, and parts you want to spend. | Small: focused space outpost or compact habitat; larger: freighter home, settlement landmark, or visitor showcase. |
These are creative directions, not rankings or guarantees of distinct rewards. Adapt the footprint and details to your unlocked parts, available resources, and personal taste. Hello Games’ Cosmos update also marks the game’s tenth anniversary with a community expedition, a timely reminder that a new project can be as much about revisiting the game as adding another functional base.
