The often-shared TextureStreamingEx=Off edit is an old community suggestion—not an official or dependable fix—and players have reported mixed results, including a loading crash.
First, identify when the textures become blurry
Note whether textures are blurry from the start or become worse only after extended play or travel. These symptoms may have different explanations, but the available reports do not establish a single cause for either one.
Hello Games’ troubleshooting instructions discussed here apply to the PC version installed through Steam. If you play on another platform, these file paths and Steam verification steps do not apply.
Try Hello Games’ PC troubleshooting steps
Work through the official, reversible steps before editing configuration values. Hello Games lists these actions for its Steam PC installation in its PC support article.

- Disable overlays and nonessential background software. Close third-party overlays, including Discord Overlay and Nvidia Experience Overlay, and temporarily disable other nonessential programs running in the background.
- Clear the shader cache. Delete the No Man’s Sky shader-cache files as directed in the support article. The next launch may take slightly longer while the game rebuilds the cache.
- Reset the game’s settings files if the issue continues. Delete the
TKGAMESETTINGSandTKGRAPHICSSETTINGSfiles named in Hello Games’ instructions. The game can regenerate them when it starts. - Verify the Steam installation. Use Steam’s game-file verification option. Hello Games says Steam will replace missing or corrupt files.
If these steps do not help, Hello Games advises contacting its help desk.
What about the TextureStreamingEx workaround?
A Steam community post dated August 11, 2017 suggests editing TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML in the game’s BinariesSETTINGS folder and changing TextureStreamingEx to Off. The post also suggests optionally setting TexturePageSizeKb to match the player’s VRAM in kilobytes. This is community advice, not a fix endorsed by Hello Games: read the Steam discussion.

Reports in that thread conflict. The original poster said the change restored their textures, while other players said it stopped working after an update, improved only part of the display, caused a crash at the loading screen, or was followed by textures becoming blurry again. The reports do not show that the edit is safe or effective across game versions and systems. Because it changes a configuration file and has been associated with a loading crash, it should not be treated as the first step or a guaranteed solution.
If blur returns after playing or travelling
In a Steam discussion that began February 27, 2022, players described textures becoming blurry after extended play or travel. Some said changing texture quality or restarting helped temporarily, but the problem could return. These are player anecdotes, not a controlled test or diagnosis: see the discussion.

You can try changing texture quality or restarting as a temporary check, but a short-lived improvement does not identify the underlying cause. Texture streaming was introduced to help minimum-spec PCs run more smoothly and to help players experiencing frame-rate drops due to memory loss, according to Hello Games’ Foundation Update notes. That stated purpose does not prove texture streaming causes every blurry-texture report.

Include whether the blur is present from launch or develops during a session, your PC and game details, and which steps you tried; this helps describe the symptom without assuming a cause.
