A failure to join co-op is a separate problem: Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, but the official sources cited here do not establish one universal fix for PC connection failures.
First identify what is failing
“Freezing” can describe several different symptoms, and a co-op connection problem does not necessarily indicate that the game itself is unstable. Before changing settings, note what happens and when:
- Startup crash or hang: the game closes, stops responding, or never reaches the menu.
- In-game freeze or slowdown: play starts, but the image locks up, performance worsens, or frame rate drops.
- Co-op failure: solo play works, but you cannot join or host a session.
Record your Windows version, storefront (Steam, GOG, or Microsoft Store), game version/build, GPU and driver, mod status, and whether the issue affects one save, every save, or multiplayer only. This context helps distinguish a local stability issue from a session problem.
Fix startup crashes and general instability
Hello Games’ PC article for startup crashes, updated March 28, 2025, recommends these checks. They are a sensible first pass for similar instability, but the article does not establish that any one item fixes every kind of freeze.

- Update the Steam client, if you use Steam, and install current drivers for both your graphics card and onboard graphics where applicable.
- Disable third-party overlays, including Steam, Discord, and Nvidia overlays, then test the game.
- Disable or uninstall video-recording software while testing.
- Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
- Remove mods temporarily and test an unmodded game.

Address persistent graphics or performance problems
If the game launches but continues to have severe graphics or performance problems, Hello Games’ August 16, 2019 PC guidance adds several steps. It is older troubleshooting advice, not a diagnosis tied to a particular current game build.

- Clear the No Man’s Sky shader-cache files as described in Hello Games’ graphics/performance article.
- Delete the named settings files,
TKGAMESETTINGSandTKGRAPHICSSETTINGS, following the article’s instructions. This resets those settings, so you may need to configure graphics options again. - If you use Steam, verify the game files through Steam. The cited verification instructions are for Steam; do not assume the same menu path applies to another storefront.
If the issue is low frame rate rather than a hard lock
Hello Games’ PC frame-rate guidance, updated August 26, 2020, identifies resolution, V-sync, anti-aliasing, HBAO, anisotropic filtering, shadow detail, light shafts, and terrain tessellation as adjustable variables. These are published minimums, not a promised frame rate or proof that any component is responsible for a freeze. The complete specifications are on Hello Games’ minimum-specifications page.
Treat co-op connection failures separately
Steam’s No Man’s Sky listing identifies online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer as features. That confirms the modes exist, but it does not mean a local graphics or crash checklist will repair a failed session. The official sources cited here do not provide a universal current procedure for fixing PC co-op connection failures.

For a co-op-only problem, note each player’s platform or storefront and game build, and describe whether the failure occurs when hosting, joining, or both. These details help frame the issue, but a difference between players’ builds or platforms should not be assumed to be the cause without evidence. If the problem persists, send Hello Games a clear description of the trigger and steps to reproduce it. Its issue-reporting guidance asks for relevant screenshots, save files, recent crash dumps, and a full DxDiag.
