There is no source-backed, universally fastest way to earn Nanites in No Man’s Sky: the best option depends on what your save can access and how much setup you want. Early on, scan every creature on a planet and claim its fauna-completion bonus. If you already have the right resources, refine Tainted Metal for the strongest listed input ratio, or farm Runaway Mould for a repeatable route. Players with plenty of Units can also turn upgrade modules from Suspicious Packets into Nanites.
Choose a route that fits your save
Current guides describe several ways to earn Nanites, but do not provide a controlled Nanites-per-minute comparison. A better conversion ratio does not automatically mean a faster farm: travel, combat, setup and refining time all matter. Use the options below as a way to match the method to what you already have, not as a universal speed ranking.

Get Nanites early by completing planetary fauna
While exploring, scan the creatures you encounter. When you have discovered all fauna on a planet, upload the discoveries and claim the completion bonus. This makes Nanites part of ordinary exploration rather than a separate resource run, and is a practical early-game option. The guide recommends the approach but does not publish a timed yield, so treat it as steady progress rather than a guaranteed quick payout.
Refine resources: compare the ratio, not just the route
Runaway Mould from Curious Deposits
Curious Deposits provide Runaway Mould, which can be refined into Nanites. The recipe reference updated July 25, 2026 lists a conversion of 5 Runaway Mould to 1 Nanite Cluster. It is a repeatable option if you have a deposit and are comfortable gathering and refining; the ratio alone does not establish how quickly it beats another method.

Tainted Metal from derelict freighters
Derelict freighter runs can provide Tainted Metal. The same recipe reference lists 1 Tainted Metal to 2 Nanite Clusters. That is more Nanites per input unit than the listed mould recipe, but does not prove a higher return per minute: the time and total yield of a run are not compared.
Hello Games’ Echoes update notes confirm the addition of refining recipes that included Runaway Mould. Recipe quantities can change between game versions, so check the refiner’s recipe preview in your installed version before committing a large stockpile.

Turn surplus items into Nanites
Sell upgrade modules
Upgrade modules obtained from scrapping ship or Multi-Tool upgrades can be sold for Nanites. Another route described in the current guide is buying Suspicious Packets in pirate systems, opening them for upgrade modules, and selling the modules. This suits a save with spare Units and access to pirate systems; the guide does not establish fixed packet costs or Nanite returns.
Keep Salvaged Data for blueprints first
Salvaged Data can be refined into Nanites at a listed rate of 15 Nanites per unit, according to the guide updated July 30, 2026. However, it also unlocks base blueprints. Spend it on the foundational blueprints you still need before converting any excess; early progression can be worth more than the immediate Nanite balance.

Other options and their prerequisites
- Larval Cores: Whispering Eggs at abandoned buildings can be collected for Nanites, but trigger hostile swarms. Choose this only if you are prepared for the encounter.
- Dissonant-world salvage: The current method guide also lists inverted mirrors, dissonant shards and Sentinel salvage. These are alternatives if you are already exploring corrupted worlds, not proven faster routes.
- Fishing: The same guide lists fishing as another possible source, without comparable speed data.
How to decide what is quickest for you
- Starting out and exploring? Scan fauna and claim complete-planet bonuses as you go.
- Already have a Curious Deposit? Gather its Runaway Mould and refine it when convenient.
- Comfortable with derelict freighters? Consider Tainted Metal, whose listed conversion ratio is better per input unit than mould.
- Have spare Units and pirate-system access? Suspicious Packets may provide upgrade modules to sell.
- Have extra Salvaged Data? Convert only the amount you can spare after unlocking needed blueprints.
For precise recipe quantities, use the refiner preview in your game version; the published ratios are guide figures, not a promise of hourly earnings.
