No Man’s Sky Omega is update 4.5, released on February 15, 2024. It redesigned community Expeditions so they could connect with an existing save, added procedurally generated planetary missions, let players take over pirate dreadnoughts, and gave the Atlas Path a new ending. It also introduced rewards such as the Starborn Runner starship and Atlas Sceptre Multi-Tool. Omega is distinct from the later Orbital update, version 4.6.
What is the No Man’s Sky Omega update?
Omega is a major No Man’s Sky update released by Hello Games on February 15, 2024. Its central focus was the Expedition system: players could launch a community Expedition from an existing save and bring selected equipment with them. The update also refreshed planetary missions, added a way to capture pirate capital ships, and changed the conclusion of the Atlas Path. Hello Games’ Omega feature page and its release log identify Omega as version 4.5.

Omega is not the same update as Orbital. Orbital followed as version 4.6, focusing on space-station redesigns, starship construction from salvaged parts, and guild and trading improvements. The release log lists both updates in sequence.
What did the Omega update add?
Expeditions linked to regular saves
Omega changed how players could enter a community Expedition. Instead of requiring a separate new game, players could start from an existing save and choose a Starship and Multi-Tool to take along. At the Space Anomaly, an Expedition terminal lets players prepare a cache of technology and cargo. They can pause the Expedition or switch back to their primary save, then use the terminal to transfer items and technology back when appropriate. The specifics are described in the Omega patch notes.

A beginner-friendly Expedition
The launch event’s Omega Expedition was designed to introduce core systems, with milestones and missions involving base-building, trading, space combat, and lore. Players without an existing save could use the Expedition’s tutorial. Hello Games described that approach in its Omega launch announcement.
Procedurally generated planetary missions
Alien lifeforms on planets can offer varied missions. Their objectives are generated in relation to the character’s personality and the planet’s locale, climate, geography, and ecology, rather than being limited to one fixed set of tasks. Hello Games describes the system on its Omega feature page and in the launch announcement.

Pirate dreadnoughts could be captured
After defeating a pirate dreadnought, players can board it and confront the captain to demand control of the ship. A cornered dreadnought can also surrender and pay tribute. These additions make the encounter a potential acquisition as well as a space battle, according to Hello Games’ feature description.
A new choice at the end of the Atlas Path
Omega added a consequential choice at the Atlas Path’s finale: players can embrace or deny the Atlas’s offer. The decision permanently affects the player’s relationship with the Atlas. The update’s official description presents this as a lasting narrative outcome.

Expedition rewards
The Omega Expedition’s named rewards included the Starborn Runner starship, Atlas Sceptre staff Multi-Tool, Atlas flightpack, and Atlas headshield. Hello Games says the Starborn Runner has a localized vector field that allows it to hover above solid surfaces. These are Expedition rewards, not a separate Omega product; the official details are on the Omega feature page.
How do I start an Expedition from my main save?
- Load the save you want to use. Omega’s Expedition system allows a community Expedition to begin from an existing save.
- Visit the Space Anomaly and use the Expedition terminal. Prepare the technology and cargo cache there, and select the Starship and Multi-Tool you want to bring.
- Begin the Expedition and progress through its missions and milestones. You can pause it or switch back to your primary save rather than treating the Expedition as a wholly separate game.
- Return to the terminal to transfer eligible items and technology. The terminal is also used to move Expedition items and technology back to the primary save, as detailed in the patch notes.
Is the Omega Expedition available now?
Omega launched with an Expedition planned to run for approximately four weeks, beginning February 15, 2024. A free access window for people who did not own No Man’s Sky ran from February 15 through February 19, 2024; it was a limited promotion, not an ongoing free-to-play offer. Those dates are documented in the launch announcement and feature page.

Hello Games included Omega among five Expeditions rerun in its limited Holiday 2024 schedule. The latest Expedition announcement in the available official record is Expedition Twenty-Three: Our Journey Continues, published September 16, 2026, and planned to run for approximately six weeks. Those announcements do not establish that Omega is active now or that it will return again. Check the in-game Expedition Terminus or Hello Games’ current announcements for the live schedule. The historical rerun is documented in the Holiday 2024 announcement; the newer event is covered in the Expedition Twenty-Three announcement.
