Critics reviewed the original No More Heroes favorably on both Wii and Nintendo Switch, but the scores come from separate review pools: GameFAQs reproduces Metacritic’s Wii score of 83 from 64 critics, while Metacritic’s Switch page lists an 82 from 22 critic reviews. Reviews praise the game’s unmistakable style and action, while pointing to repetition and dated design as its main drawbacks.

What did reviewers praise—and criticize?
Distinctive style and combat
Reviews highlight the game’s punk-inflected presentation, absurd humor, and singular personality. Critics also praised its action and the satisfaction of its combat, especially the beam-katana fighting and wrestling moves that define Travis Touchdown’s rise through the United Assassins Association. The appeal is closely tied to the game’s strong authorial identity: it is deliberately strange rather than a conventional open-world action game.

Repetition and dated design
The same structure that gives the game its offbeat identity can wear thin. Critics have called out repetitive play, tedious minigames, and open-world activity that feels sparse or shallow. Some reviews question how well the original design has aged; others regard repetition as part of the game’s deliberate rhythm. In practice, the game’s personality and combat are its strongest draws, while its old-fashioned structure is a real obstacle for players who expect a consistently varied city or mission loop.
How was the Switch version reviewed?
The Switch aggregate is 82 from 22 critic reviews on Metacritic’s page, with 19 positive, 3 mixed, and 0 negative. Its review excerpts reflect the broader divide: praise for a stylish, unusual, rewarding game sits alongside concerns about tedious sections and whether its design has aged well. That is a reception for the Switch release’s review sample, not a timeless score for every version.

Nintendo UK lists the Switch edition as download software released on 28 October 2020. The UK listing credits Marvelous Inc. as developer and Marvelous Europe as publisher; it gives a PEGI 18 rating, lists English among the languages, and states a 2.2 GB download size. These are details from the UK store page and can differ by region. Nintendo UK’s No More Heroes listing has the product details.
Is the Switch version better than the Wii version?
The available evidence supports a comparison of review scores and one reviewer’s technical observations, but not a universal “best version” verdict. The Wii score reproduced by GameFAQs is 83 from 64 critics; Metacritic’s Switch page shows 82 from 22. Because the platforms were reviewed by different critics in different periods, the one-point difference does not establish that one edition is meaningfully better.

In a review updated 10 November 2020, MeriStation’s Rubén Martínez described the Switch release as a remaster with improved textures and controls adapted for Switch. He reported 1080p resolution in docked play and 720p in handheld mode, with performance varying around 50–60 FPS and drops in some scenes. These are Martínez’s review observations, not independent measurements here. He also judged the Switch conversion technically better than the earlier PS3 and Japan-only Xbox 360 ports. MeriStation’s Switch review provides that assessment.
Martínez discussed Joy-Con motion controls adapted from the Wii version and noted that the Switch release is uncensored. Those details describe the edition reviewed and should not be generalized to every regional release or other platform version.

Is No More Heroes still worth playing?
Critics’ reception suggests it is most likely to click with players who value strong style, eccentric humor, and distinctive action more than a polished, consistently varied open world. If repetition, sparse city activities, or dated design are deal-breakers, the game’s core strengths may not outweigh those frustrations. The Switch review consensus is favorable, but neither aggregate score removes that trade-off.
