Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Windows and Steam have sound but a Steam game is silent, check the game’s entry in Windows Volume Mixer first. The game may be muted, assigned to a disconnected headset or monitor, or using a different output device from Windows. Then check the game’s own audio mode, relaunch it after changing devices, and only afterward move on to services, drivers, software conflicts, or Steam file verification.
These steps apply to Steam games running locally on Windows 10 and Windows 11—not Steam Link streaming.
If Steam games remain silent, Outbyte Driver Updater can check audio drivers and install official recommended versions for the device.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fastest fix checklist
- Start the affected game and enter a menu or area where sound should play.
- Open Windows Volume mixer.
- Unmute the game, raise its volume, and select the speakers or headset you are actually using.
- Set that same device as Windows’ default output.
- Close the game completely and launch it again.
- In the game, select Stereo or Headphones temporarily and disable surround or spatial processing.
Microsoft identifies per-application volume, per-application output routing, audio services, and drivers as common reasons an individual application can be silent while system sounds work. See Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guide.
First, identify which audio problem you have
No sound anywhere in Windows
Play a browser video and use Windows’ built-in sound test. If neither produces audio, this is probably a general Windows, device, driver, cable, Bluetooth, HDMI, or hardware problem rather than a Steam-specific problem. Select the intended output device, check mute and volume, and run Microsoft’s Get Help audio troubleshooter.

Windows and Steam have sound, but games do not
Prioritize Volume Mixer, per-app output routing, the game’s audio settings, audio enhancements, spatial sound, and third-party audio utilities.
Only one Steam game is silent
Start with that game’s settings, stereo/headphone mode, file verification, and any game-specific support information. A damaged configuration or game bug is more likely than a Steam-wide failure.
Every Steam game is silent
Check Windows routing, the default device, audio services, drivers, virtual audio software, overlays, and recent changes to headphones, USB devices, Bluetooth, HDMI, or DisplayPort.
1. Check the game in Windows Volume Mixer
Windows 11
- Launch the game and leave it running.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the game.
- Make sure it is not muted, raise its volume, and set Output device to the speakers or headset you want.
Windows can give an individual application its own volume and output assignment. The game can therefore be silent even when the main Windows volume and Steam audio are normal.
Windows 10
- Launch the game.
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and select Open Volume Mixer.
- Raise the game’s volume and make sure it is not muted.
- If available, open App volume and device preferences and assign the correct playback device.
Labels vary slightly between Windows 10 builds and audio-driver software. Check the game’s individual volume and playback device—not only the main volume slider.
If the game is missing: it may not appear until it has attempted to play audio. Start gameplay or open a menu where sound should play, then inspect the mixer again.
2. Select the correct output device
The game may be sending audio to an unplugged headset, a monitor over HDMI or DisplayPort, a USB DAC, a connected Bluetooth device, a virtual audio endpoint, or a device assigned only to that application.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the intended speakers or headphones.
- Open Volume mixer and explicitly assign the same device to the game.
Windows 10
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and select the intended playback device.
- Open Sounds > Playback.
- Right-click the device and choose Set as Default.
- Return to the mixer and check the game’s app-specific device.
Microsoft’s audio guide documents selecting the active output and setting a default playback device.
3. Fully relaunch the game
After changing headphones, speakers, a USB DAC, Bluetooth device, monitor, or default output, exit the game normally and launch it again. If necessary, confirm that its process has closed in Task Manager.

Some games choose an audio endpoint when they start and may continue using the previous device during the current session. Relaunching is a practical compatibility step, not a guaranteed Windows rule. Community reports describe games retaining an old device after an output change.
4. Check the game’s audio settings
Open the game’s audio or sound menu and confirm:
- Master volume, effects, music, dialogue, and voice-chat sliders are above zero.
- The selected speaker mode matches your equipment.
- Output is set to Stereo or Headphones for testing.
- Surround, Dolby, DTS, spatial audio, or other specialized modes are temporarily disabled.
- The game has not selected a monitor, controller, VR headset, or another endpoint.
Stereo is a diagnostic test for channel-layout and surround-compatibility problems, not a permanent requirement. Restore your preferred surround setup after testing if it works correctly.
Steam’s sound troubleshooting advice includes checking in-game settings and trying different output configurations. Its specific instruction to set Steam Link’s speaker configuration to Stereo applies to Steam Link, not ordinary desktop Steam playback.
5. Disable enhancements and spatial audio temporarily
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the active output device.
- Turn off Audio enhancements.
- Set Spatial sound to Off, if available.
- Relaunch the game.
Windows 10
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and open Sounds.
- On Playback, select the active device and choose Properties.
- On Enhancements, select Disable all enhancements.
- If there is no Enhancements tab, check Advanced for audio effects or processing controls.
- Apply the change and relaunch the game.
Microsoft recommends disabling enhancements when speakers or headphones produce no sound. This is a diagnostic step. Dolby, DTS, EQ, hearing-assistance processing, and virtual-surround features may be useful in other applications, so re-enable them individually after identifying the conflict.
6. Test exclusive mode as a targeted workaround
- Open Sound Control Panel.
- Choose Playback, select the active device, and click Properties.
- Open Advanced.
- Temporarily clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- Apply the setting and relaunch the game.
This is not a universal Steam fix. Microsoft community guidance and user reports associate exclusive mode with some application-specific conflicts, but Microsoft’s main support workflow does not identify it as a guaranteed solution. Disabling it can affect applications that need exclusive low-latency access. Restore the previous setting if it changes nothing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute7. Restart Windows audio services
Try this when sound disappears after sleep, device changes, or intermittent audio failures:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Relaunch Steam and the game.
These are the services Microsoft recommends restarting for app-specific audio failures. If restarting them disrupts other applications, restart Windows before continuing.
8. Update, reinstall, or roll back the audio driver
Prefer drivers from the laptop or prebuilt-PC manufacturer. On a custom desktop, check the motherboard manufacturer. For HDMI or DisplayPort audio, also check the graphics-card manufacturer. USB and Bluetooth headsets may have their own device software or drivers.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device and choose Update driver.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this Device Manager driver path. If the issue began immediately after a driver or Windows change, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if available, or install a previous stable package from the manufacturer.

9. Verify the game’s files in Steam
Use this mainly when one game is affected, audio disappeared after an update, the game reports missing content, or files may have been quarantined or damaged.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
Steam may redownload or replace missing files. Menu names can change between Steam client versions, so look for the verification control under the game’s Properties and Installed Files area. Steam’s current guidance is available in its file verification FAQ.
Verification does not necessarily reset personal settings, repair a game-engine bug, or fix Windows audio. It also should not delete normal save data, although you should back up important saves before manually changing game folders.

10. Isolate software conflicts
Temporarily close or disable nonessential software that can create virtual devices, process audio, or inject overlays:
- Virtual-surround and EQ applications.
- USB headset control panels.
- Audio mixers and virtual cables.
- Capture and streaming tools.
- In-game, voice-chat, FPS, and performance overlays.
- Remote-play or streaming software.
Change one variable at a time so you know what affected the result. Steam recommends disabling nonessential software during game troubleshooting in its software-conflict guidance. A clean boot or wholesale software removal should be a later diagnostic step, not the first response.
Hardware-specific checks
USB headsets and DACs
- Reconnect the device and try another USB port.
- Confirm Windows has not switched back to motherboard audio.
- Set the USB device as output and default, then relaunch the game.
- Test it on another device if possible.
Bluetooth headsets
- Confirm the stereo/headphones playback profile is selected rather than a hands-free communications profile.
- Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth.
- Test wired speakers or headphones to determine whether the problem is Bluetooth-specific.
HDMI and DisplayPort
- Check whether the monitor or TV is selected as the output.
- Confirm the display is not muted.
- Test analog or motherboard audio if available.
- Do not assume a graphics-driver update fixes every HDMI audio issue.
Controllers and VR headsets
Some games can select a controller, VR headset, or headset base station as the audio endpoint. Disconnect the peripheral temporarily and relaunch the game.

After checking routing, settings, enhancements, drivers, and file integrity, consult that game’s developer support page or Steam Discussions. If the developer documents a configuration reset, back up the relevant folder first and distinguish audio configuration from save data. Do not delete AppData, Documents, Steam Cloud, or registry data blindly.

Reinstalling Steam is not a sensible first step for a muted app, wrong output assignment, stale device session, driver conflict, or damaged game file. Avoid registry edits and third-party “audio fixer” or “driver updater” tools unless the specific developer or hardware manufacturer documents a need for them.

Windows 10 support note
Windows 10 troubleshooting paths remain useful, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Do not assume Windows 10 will continue receiving normal free security or feature updates, including future driver fixes. See Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting and support information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YouTube work but my Steam game has no sound?
The game can have its own muted volume or output assignment in Windows Volume Mixer, even when browser and Steam audio use the correct device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why is the game missing from Volume Mixer?
It may not have attempted to play audio yet. Start gameplay or open a sound-producing menu, then check Volume Mixer again.
Why do I need to restart the game after changing headphones?
Some games select an audio device when they start and may retain the previous endpoint until the game is fully closed and relaunched.
Should I reinstall Steam?
Usually not. Check per-app routing, game settings, services, drivers, software conflicts, and game-file integrity first.
Should I disable exclusive mode?
Only test it as a targeted workaround. It may help some application-specific conflicts but can affect applications that need exclusive low-latency audio access.
Why do only HDMI or Bluetooth devices fail?
Those devices have separate playback endpoints and profiles. Windows may have selected another device, a monitor may be muted, or Bluetooth may be using a hands-free profile.
Is this a Steam problem or a Windows problem?
It can be either, but the symptom pattern helps: all Windows apps silent suggests Windows or hardware; one game suggests game settings or files; all Steam games suggests routing, services, drivers, or audio software.
