Unreal, Unreal Tournament, the original PC versions of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Gold, Need for Speed II SE, Need for Speed III, and POD are strong places to start exploring 3dfx Glide games. They are notable examples, not an objective ranking: the available catalogs document support, but do not compare game quality or image output under consistent conditions.
The crucial distinction is that “3dfx” branding does not always mean a game directly used the Glide API. Native Glide support, the game edition and its patch, and the hardware or wrapper used to run it all matter.
Notable 3dfx Glide games to try
This selection spans shooters, adventure games, and racing titles. It reflects documented examples and historical interest rather than a measured “best to worst” order.
| Game | Why it stands out | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unreal | A prominent example of a game that gained a Glide renderer during development; it also offered Direct3D and OpenGL renderers. | Glide was one rendering path, not the only way to play. The VOGONS technical reference describes the renderer’s development history: 3dfx – Vogons Wiki. |
| Unreal Tournament | A well-known shooter listed in the game catalog and discussed in archived driver documentation. | Keep Glide and OpenGL instructions separate: an archived readme describes different dependencies for the APIs, and its period setup notes are not modern compatibility guarantees. 3dfx Archive. |
| Tomb Raider | An early adventure-game example with a DOS Glide-patch entry in the catalog. | Check the specific DOS edition and patch; do not assume every version has the same rendering options. The catalog lists Tomb Raider Gold separately. 3dfxGlide.com game catalog. |
| Tomb Raider Gold | A distinct entry in the catalog’s Windows game listings. | Original Glide support should not be assumed to carry over to a later release or re-release. |
| Need for Speed II SE | A racing-game example in the catalog. | The listing documents a game example, not a verified configuration for any present-day storefront edition. |
| Need for Speed III | Another racing title appearing in the catalog and in a historical community discussion. | Confirm the exact title, version, and configuration before following setup advice. The 2003 thread is historical context, not authoritative compatibility documentation. 3dfxzone community thread. |
| POD | A further racing-game example named in both the catalog and the community discussion. | The available listings do not establish a quality ranking or compatibility for current editions. |
What native Glide support means
Glide was an interface associated with 3dfx Voodoo graphics cards. A game that directly supports Glide uses a Glide library; a 3dfx logo by itself is not proof. Some games associated with 3dfx did not directly use Glide, while others used a MiniGL driver instead.

- 【Note】 This PCI Graphics Card for Desktop Computer only supports systems below for WIN XP, not new systems, and is not compatible with for WIN and . The product is PCI interface, not PCI‑E.
The VOGONS reference gives a practical technical test: “If software does not straightforwardly access either glide.dll, glide2x.dll/ovl or glide3x.dll, it cannot be said to directly support the Glide API.” Those filenames help distinguish direct Glide access from a game that merely carries 3dfx branding or uses another graphics path.
Even a confirmed Glide game may have other renderers. Unreal, for example, also supported Direct3D and OpenGL. The fact that a game can run through one API does not establish that it is using another.

Does a Glide game require a Voodoo card?
For the original native Glide experience, Glide is associated with 3dfx Voodoo hardware. A Glide wrapper can translate a game’s Glide calls so it may run on a different graphics card, but that is a compatibility option—not a guarantee that every title, patch, or operating system will work.
- Original hardware: A Voodoo card is relevant if the goal is to use the period hardware and its native Glide path. Compatibility with a particular modern motherboard, operating system, or other components is not established for every card.
- Wrapper: A wrapper may let a Glide game use a non-Voodoo graphics card. Results depend on the game, version, wrapper, and host system.
- Other renderer: If the specific game and edition provide another renderer, it may offer a way to play without invoking Glide. Do not infer that option from the title alone.
The VOGONS reference notes that older Windows 9x games can still have difficulties on modern operating systems, even when wrappers are available. Treat each game as its own compatibility case rather than expecting a universal solution.

Why game, platform, and patch details matter
Glide catalogs group titles across different platforms and API generations, including Windows and DOS entries. Some DOS listings explicitly depend on a patch. A title name alone therefore may not tell you whether your copy has Glide support.
- Identify whether you have the DOS or Windows version and the exact edition.
- For patch-dependent entries such as the DOS listing for Tomb Raider, confirm that the required patch is applicable to your copy.
- Keep API-specific instructions distinct. An archived readme dated 30 January 2003 says its OpenGL ICD requires Glide3x, while MiniGL requires Glide2x; those historical dependencies do not establish present-day support.
- Do not assume a modern re-release retains the renderer or configuration options of an original PC release.
The 3dfxGlide.com catalog is community-maintained and useful for finding candidates, but it is not presented as an exhaustive official list. A 3dfxzone forum thread from 3 December 2003 captures the longstanding search for a comprehensive list; its title examples are useful leads, not definitive compatibility evidence.

How to choose a first game
Choose based on the kind of experience you want and how clearly the relevant edition’s Glide path is documented, rather than treating “best” as a universal score. For a recognizable shooter, start with Unreal or Unreal Tournament; for an adventure, compare the specific Tomb Raider version and its platform; for racing, the catalog offers Need for Speed II SE, Need for Speed III, and POD.
No common benchmark or image-quality comparison establishes which title looks or plays best through Glide. The practical choice depends on the game’s genre, the edition you can run, and whether you want original Voodoo hardware or are willing to try a wrapper.
