novellnp.dll Missing: Trace and Repair the Old Novell Client

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which program shows the error: a legacy application, Windows startup, or the sign-in process.
  • When it appears: immediately after boot, during login, or only when one old program starts.
  • What changed: a Novell Client uninstall, antivirus scan, disk cleanup, system-image restore, or migration from Windows 9x or Windows ME.
  • Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type. Modern Windows is usually 64-bit, while novellnp.dll belongs to a Windows 9x-era 32-bit client generation.
  • Whether Novell software is still needed: this determines whether you should repair the client or remove its leftover configuration.

novellnp.dll is not a normal Windows system file. It is identified as Novell Client Provider for Windows 9x, a legacy networking component published by Novell, Inc. If Windows cannot find it, the safest solution is usually to repair or remove the old Novell Client rather than download a replacement DLL.

What novellnp.dll does

A Windows network provider helps the operating system communicate with a particular network or authentication system. The old Novell provider was associated with Novell Client software for Windows 9x.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes this a third-party application DLL, not a file supplied by Microsoft. It should not normally be present on a clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact release, file size, hash, dependency list, and public product manifest for this individual DLL are not reliably established. What is clear is its product association and its legacy platform:

#1 Best Overall
  • It belongs to the Windows 9x client generation.
  • It should be treated as a 32-bit legacy component.
  • It is not evidence of a missing modern Windows runtime.
  • A current Visual C++ package is not a substitute for the Novell provider. Microsoft’s current redistributable packages are documented here, but they do not recreate a Novell network provider.

A modern 64-bit version of Windows may also be fundamentally incompatible with the client that originally used this file. Copying the DLL into a Windows folder cannot provide the old services, network-provider registration, drivers, or dependencies that the client requires.

What the error means

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because novellnp.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “novellnp.dll was not found.”
  • “This application failed to start because novellnp.dll was not found.”
  • “novellnp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording depends on the Windows version and the program displaying the error.

These messages mean that a program or registered Windows component requested novellnp.dll, but Windows could not load it. The file may genuinely be missing, or Windows may still have a stale Novell provider registration after the client was removed.

Common triggers include:

  • An incomplete Novell Client uninstall
  • Removal of an old Windows 9x application
  • Antivirus quarantine or accidental deletion
  • Disk cleanup
  • Restoration of an old system image
  • Migration from Windows 9x or Windows ME to a newer Windows release
  • A damaged application that still expects its Novell dependency

First decision: repair the client or remove it

Repair it if the old software is still required

Choose repair or reinstall if:

  • Your organization still uses a Novell network or application.
  • One specific legacy program still needs the provider.
  • The error started after an update, cleanup, or security scan.
  • The original Novell Client installation media or authorized archive is available.

The correct package matters. Different Novell Client generations are not necessarily interchangeable, and a DLL from another release may not work with the installed client.

Remove it if the software is no longer needed

Choose removal if:

  • The Novell Client was supposedly uninstalled already.
  • The error appears during every startup or login.
  • No current application uses Novell networking.
  • The old application cannot run reliably on modern Windows anyway.

Removing the obsolete dependency is safer than keeping a broken network provider registered.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete Novell Client

This is the most likely fix when the file is missing from an otherwise intact legacy installation.

Do not begin by downloading novellnp.dll separately. Obtain the original Novell Client package from an authorized Novell or Micro Focus support source, or from the software owner that supplied the legacy application. The package should match the client generation and Windows environment that originally installed the provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the client is installed

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for Novell Client, Novell NetWare Client, or a similarly named Novell entry.
  5. Select it and look for Change, Repair, or Modify.

If a repair option is available:

  1. Select Repair.
  2. Allow the installer to restore the complete client.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the program or sign-in process that produced the error.

If the error is gone, the client and its provider registration were restored together.

Reinstall when repair is unavailable

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. In Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, find the Novell Client.
  3. If the client is present but damaged, uninstall it only after confirming that you have the correct installer.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted.
  5. Run the authorized installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the installer’s instructions for the required network components.
  7. Restart Windows again.
  8. Test the original application.

If the installer refuses to run, reports an unsupported operating system, or installs successfully but the error remains, the old client may not be compatible with modern Windows. Do not force the installation by copying files manually. Ask the application owner or administrator whether the software must run in a supported virtual machine containing the original Windows and Novell environment.

Check antivirus quarantine

If the error began immediately after a security scan:

  1. Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
  2. Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
  3. Look for an entry involving novellnp.dll or the Novell Client directory.
  4. Do not restore the file solely because the name matches.
  5. Verify that the file came from the original Novell installation and that the legacy software is still required.
  6. Prefer repairing or reinstalling the complete client instead of restoring one isolated file.
  7. Run another security scan after the client is repaired.

A quarantined file may have been altered or replaced. Restoring it is safe only after validating the original installation and the detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Remove stale Novell startup and provider configuration

If the Novell Client was removed but Windows still requests novellnp.dll, the file may no longer be the real problem. Windows could still be trying to load a registered network provider, service, startup item, or policy reference.

Remove the remaining application entry

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for every Novell or NetWare-related entry.
  5. Remove the entry through its own uninstall program.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Check whether the error still appears.

On Windows 11, you can also open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the three-dot menu beside the Novell entry, and choose Uninstall.

Do not remove random registry values because they contain the word “Novell.” If manual cleanup is required, export a backup first and identify the exact provider or service entry responsible for the message.

Check network-provider and adapter configuration

The available controls vary by Windows version and installed components. If the error occurs before login, inspect the network configuration rather than only the application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type ncpa.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Right-click the active network connection and select Properties.
  5. Look for an obsolete Novell, NetWare, or third-party network component.
  6. Remove it only if you are certain that no required system uses it.
  7. Restart Windows.

You can also check:

  • Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings
  • Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices
  • Services by pressing Windows key + R, entering services.msc, and checking for clearly identified Novell services
  • Task Manager > Startup apps for an obsolete Novell launcher

Do not disable unrelated Microsoft network services. If you are unsure which entry belongs to the old client, stop and obtain the original client documentation or assistance from the system administrator.

Check Group Policy references

On managed computers, a logon script or Group Policy setting may still launch the old software.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter gpedit.msc if the edition of Windows provides the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Inspect Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts and User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts.
  4. Also check software deployment or logon entries maintained by your organization.
  5. Remove or update only the confirmed Novell reference.

If the computer is domain-managed, contact the administrator before changing policy or provider settings.

Fix 3: Reinstall the parent application

If only one old application reports the error, the application may contain the stale dependency even though Windows itself is working normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Choose Advanced options if available.
  4. Try Repair, then Reset only if you understand that reset may remove application settings.
  5. If those options are unavailable, uninstall the application.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall it from its original installer or the application publisher’s authorized source.
  8. Run the application as administrator once if its installer requires elevated setup.
  9. Test the program again.

If the application specifically depends on a Novell Client, reinstalling only the application may not be enough. Install the matching complete Novell package as well.

If the application is a Windows 9x-era program, compatibility mode may not solve a missing network provider. Right-click its shortcut, select Properties > Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility setting only after the dependency is correctly installed. Compatibility mode cannot turn a 32-bit legacy network driver into a supported modern driver.

Fix 4: Check whether Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM are useful when multiple protected Windows components are failing. They are not normal repair tools for novellnp.dll, because this is a third-party Novell file.

Use them when you also see:

  • Several unrelated Windows components failing
  • Windows servicing errors
  • Problems with protected system files
  • Repeated crashes outside the old Novell-dependent application

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains SFC here, and DISM image repair here.

These commands may repair Windows components, but they will not normally restore novellnp.dll. If SFC reports that it repaired files and the Novell error remains, return to the Novell Client repair or removal steps.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when several Windows components are involved. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found; repair actions require the full version, and reinstalling the Novell-dependent application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 5: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to drivers

novellnp.dll is not a graphics or ordinary hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally recreate it. Use driver troubleshooting only when you also have network-adapter failures, missing devices, yellow warning icons, or a recent hardware or Windows update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon or an adapter that has disappeared.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter and choose Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  6. If the problem began after a recent update, open Properties > Driver and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
  7. Restart Windows and test the network and affected application.

Do not install an old Novell network driver into modern Windows merely because it appears related to the DLL. An unsupported driver can create boot, login, or network problems.

Identifying the correct network driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows versions, and vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; the driver installation feature requires the full version, and it does not replace the correct Novell Client package.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix

A common suggestion for missing DLL errors is:

regsvr32 novellnp.dll

That is not a justified first-line repair here.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the required COM registration entry points. A network-provider component may not be a self-registering COM DLL. Running the command can produce errors about missing entry points or architecture mismatch without addressing the actual problem.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation is available here. Use it only when the Novell installer or authoritative application documentation explicitly requires registration. Do not register a downloaded DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64

Downloading a matching-looking file from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different release, or have the wrong architecture. It also often fails to fix the root cause.

Copying a 32-bit legacy DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 does not recreate:

  • The Novell network provider registration
  • Required services
  • Client configuration
  • Related drivers
  • Dependent libraries
  • Logon or Group Policy settings

It can also create new loader errors. Use the complete authorized installer, or remove the obsolete provider if the software is no longer needed.

Try System Restore after a known change

System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a confirmed installation, removal, cleanup, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose Next.
  5. Select a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

System Restore does not guarantee recovery of a legacy client and does not replace a verified installer. Microsoft’s recovery guidance is here.

If modern Windows cannot run the client

A Windows 9x-era Novell component may be incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11 even when the DLL is present. Reinstalling the file alone cannot solve a 32-bit versus 64-bit conflict, an unsupported driver, or a missing legacy network subsystem.

If the application is still essential:

  1. Contact the application owner or administrator.
  2. Ask for a supported replacement or updated client.
  3. Preserve the original installation media and configuration.
  4. Consider running the old application inside a properly supported virtual machine containing the original Windows and Novell environment.
  5. Keep the legacy environment isolated and use it only for the required application.

If the application is no longer essential, remove the obsolete Novell Client and its stale provider configuration instead of trying to preserve a broken dependency.

FAQ

Is novellnp.dll part of Windows?

No. Available identification associates it with the Novell Client Provider for Windows 9x, published by Novell, Inc. It is not a standard Windows component.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is novellnp.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

It belongs to the Windows 9x-era client generation and should be treated as a 32-bit legacy component. The individual file’s PE architecture has not been independently verified, so do not infer a modern 64-bit build from the filename.

Should I download novellnp.dll?

No. Do not use an isolated DLL from an unverified download source. Repair the complete Novell Client from an authorized source, reinstall the parent application, or remove the obsolete provider.

Why does Windows ask for it during startup?

A Novell network provider, service, startup item, logon script, or policy reference may still be registered. This commonly happens after an incomplete uninstall or migration from an older Windows installation.

Will Visual C++ fix the error?

No. Current Visual C++ redistributables are not a substitute for this Novell component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC or DISM restore the file?

Normally, no. They repair protected Windows files and Windows component stores, not arbitrary third-party Novell DLLs.

Can I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair and may report an entry-point or architecture error.

What is the correct final fix?

If the old software is still required, repair or reinstall the matching complete Novell Client. If it is not required, uninstall the obsolete client and remove its stale provider or startup configuration.
