novinthfx.dll is an obscure third-party library associated with Novint HFX software and the Novint Falcon haptic controller. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, or standard DirectX component.
The safest fix is to identify the executable requesting novinthfx.dll, then repair or reinstall that game, Falcon package, or older HFX-compatible application. Do not begin by downloading the DLL and copying it into System32.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting novinthfx.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The filename alone does not prove that the file belongs on your current Windows installation. It may be requested by an old Novint application, a Falcon-compatible game, a Source-engine modification, or an obsolete startup entry.

- Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field. The executable at the end of the path is the program to repair.
- Open the program’s installation folder by selecting Open File Location, if available.
- Look for a nearby executable, game launcher, or folder referencing Falcon, Novint, HFX, or an older game installation.
- If the error appears during startup, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps and look for an old Novint or game entry.
- For more detail, press Win + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application and inspect errors recorded at the time of the failure.
If a known game or Novint program is requesting the file, continue with the matching repair below. If an unfamiliar executable requests it, scan and investigate that executable before restoring anything.

Fix 2: Repair the game through its launcher
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
A game may have lost its local copy of novinthfx.dll after an interrupted update, a damaged backup, or antivirus quarantine. Launcher repair is safer than replacing one file manually because it checks the complete installation.
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Other launchers use similar commands named Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair. Open the game’s menu, select its management or installation options, and run the repair operation.
If the launcher restores the file and the game starts, the installation was incomplete. If the same message returns, the launcher may not contain the old Novint component, or the problem may be a missing dependency rather than novinthfx.dll itself.
Fix 3: Reinstall the original Novint Falcon or HFX software
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely definitive repair when the computer still uses a Novint Falcon or software designed for it.
A preserved Falcon quick-start guide identifies the historical installer as:
setup.Falcon.v4.0.28.0_100707.exe
The guide instructs users to install the driver package before connecting the Falcon. The original Novint download page is not reliably available now, so treat old installer copies carefully.
- Disconnect the Falcon from USB.
- Open Settings with Win + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Novint, Falcon, or related HFX software.
- If an existing installation is listed, select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the original installer from trusted installation media or a preserved source whose provenance can be checked.
- Before running it, right-click the installer and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present. A missing signature does not prove malware, but an unexpected signer or altered file is a reason to stop.
- Right-click the installer again and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation while the Falcon remains disconnected.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Connect the Falcon only after installation finishes.
- Launch the affected game or HFX application.
A clean reinstall should restore the complete matching software chain, not just one DLL. If the installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, and test an appropriate older Windows compatibility mode. Compatibility mode cannot solve every old driver-signing or USB problem, but it is safer than replacing files at random.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine an old binary because it is uncommon, digitally unsigned, packed unusually, or associated with legacy software. A historical Falcon-related antivirus log also contains the filename, but that does not prove that every copy is safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with the game, Falcon software, or
novinthfx.dll. - Check the detected file path and parent executable.
- Restore the file only when you recognize the parent program and trust the installer that supplied it.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, do not use it merely to make an unknown program launch.
- Prefer reinstalling the complete, trusted parent application instead of restoring a loose DLL.
- Run another scan after reinstalling.
If the file was found inside an unknown crack, trainer, unofficial launcher, or unrelated executable, leave it quarantined and investigate that program. The DLL name does not authenticate the software requesting it.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit compatibility and missing dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The only publicly indexed record for this file is 32-bit. That means a 32-bit game or application may require a 32-bit build even when Windows itself is 64-bit. It does not prove that every historical copy had identical architecture or metadata.
Do not copy a 64-bit replacement into a 32-bit program folder. Reinstall the matching application files instead.
A message saying:
The specified module could not be found
can also mean that novinthfx.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
Check the application directory first:
- Open the failing program’s folder.
- Confirm whether
novinthfx.dllis already present. - If it is present, do not overwrite it with a file from another source.
- Repair or reinstall the complete application.
- If the installer documents a required Microsoft runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft rather than from a DLL collection.
- Do not install random Visual C++ or DirectX packages without evidence that the program requires them.
If the application is very old, it may also depend on obsolete drivers, graphics components, USB behavior, or hardware that modern Windows no longer supports fully.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other system files are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party Novint DLL, so use them when Windows has broader corruption or several unrelated applications are failing.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
If SFC reports repaired files, reboot before testing. If it reports that it could not fix some files, run the DISM command again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Repeatedly running these commands will not supply novinthfx.dll if the parent application removed it.

Do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a storage location for this DLL. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows system components on 64-bit Windows, but that does not make it the correct home for a third-party game library.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall the related device drivers
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing novinthfx.dll is not normally repaired by Device Manager, but old Falcon software can also fail because its USB or device driver is incomplete.
- Disconnect the Falcon.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any category showing an unknown device.
- Look for a warning icon or an entry that appeared when the Falcon was connected.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove driver software, select that option only when you intend to reinstall the complete, trusted Falcon package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the original Falcon software as described above.
- Connect the controller after installation.
- In Device Manager, right-click the device and select Properties to check its status.
Windows Update may not provide drivers for obsolete hardware. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through device entries and checking which drivers are stale; its driver installations are handled by the full version, and it cannot replace the original Falcon software package.
If the device remains unknown or repeatedly disconnects, the old hardware may be incompatible with the current USB or driver-signing environment. The DLL error may only be the first visible symptom.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A game library loaded directly by an executable generally does not need registration.
Running this command:
regsvr32 novinthfx.dll
may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not repair a missing file, restore dependencies, or make an incompatible application work. Use the parent installer instead.

If no Novint hardware, game, SDK, or HFX-compatible application remains on the computer, you may not need this file at all. Remove the obsolete program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, and inspect Startup apps or Task Scheduler if the error appears on every boot.

Frequently asked questions
Is novinthfx.dll a Windows file?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with third-party Novint HFX and Falcon-era software, not with Windows itself.
Is Novint Falcon the confirmed source?
It is the best-supported identification from the Falcon software ecosystem and historical application references, but an accessible vendor file manifest does not definitively prove which package contained every historical build.
Should I download novinthfx.dll separately?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched build. They also leave the parent application and its dependencies broken.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributables?
Only if the application’s installer or dependency investigation identifies a required runtime. There is no verified evidence that one particular Visual C++ version is the standard fix for this DLL.
Why does the error say a module is missing when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of novinthfx.dll, or the file may be corrupted or incompatible. Reinstalling the complete application is more reliable than copying another DLL beside it.
Can I fix the problem by enabling a Windows Feature?
Usually not. Enabling random legacy components does not restore a third-party Novint library. Enable a Windows Feature only when the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
What if I no longer use a Falcon?
