npgoogleupdate3.dll is a genuine legacy 32-bit Google Update component, not a Windows system DLL. The safest fix for a missing npgoogleupdate3.dll error is to identify the Google application named in the message and repair or reinstall that application using its official installer.

What this file actually does

npgoogleupdate3.dll was associated with Google Update, historically used by Chrome, Google Earth Pro, and other Google Windows products. It belongs with the Google application that installed it, rather than with Windows itself.

The file is a legacy NPAPI-related component. Google’s Omaha update system used per-user locations such as:

Machine-wide installations commonly used:

C:Program Files (x86)GoogleUpdate<version>

The known file record is 32-bit, version 1.3.28.15, and approximately 0.56 MB. Those are historical catalogue values, not universal requirements for every copy. Other Google Update releases used different versions, so do not replace the file based only on its name, size, or version.

Common reported wording includes “The program can’t start because npgoogleupdate3.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because npgoogleupdate3.dll was not found,” and “Error loading npgoogleupdate3.dll.” The exact text depends on Windows and the application making the request.

Fix 1: Identify the parent application

Start with the error dialog. The title bar or message often identifies the program that attempted to load the DLL. That program is more useful than the filename because the installer for the parent program owns the correct copy and its related files.

Then search for existing copies:

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, enter npgoogleupdate3.dll.
  4. Allow the search to finish.
  5. Right-click a result and select Open file location.
  6. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Location, Details, and Digital Signatures.

A legitimate historical copy should be alongside Google Update or the Google application that uses it. Treat copies in a download folder, temporary folder, random game directory, or Windows system directory as suspicious until checked.

The signature can help establish publisher identity, but it does not prove that the file is still needed or that the installation is current. If there is no valid signature, the location is unusual, or security software flags the file, scan it with Windows Security before opening or restoring it.

Fix 2: Reinstall Chrome when Chrome is named

If Chrome is the application reporting the error, reinstall Chrome rather than replacing the DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close every Chrome window.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features.
  4. Find Google Chrome.
  5. Select the three-dot menu, choose Uninstall, and complete the wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Download Chrome again from Google’s official Chrome download page or use its official offline installer instructions.
  8. Run the installer and allow it to complete.
  9. Start Chrome and repeat the action that produced the error.

If uninstalling leaves Chrome-related data behind, do not immediately delete your profile. Bookmarks, extensions, and settings may be stored there. First test Chrome with a new Windows user account. If Chrome works in the new account, the original profile or its permissions may be damaged.

Google removed NPAPI support from Chrome permanently. Therefore, reinstalling a current Chrome build may repair an old installation reference, but it will not make a legacy NPAPI plugin load in modern Chrome.

Fix 3: Reinstall Google Earth Pro when Earth is named

For a Google Earth Pro error, use the Earth Pro installer rather than a standalone DLL.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Google Earth Pro.
  4. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Download the current Google Earth Pro installer from Google’s official Earth Pro help or download page.
  7. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  8. Finish the installation and launch Earth Pro.

This replaces the application’s files as a matching set and recreates the update components the installer still uses. If the Earth Pro installer reports a separate MSI or Windows Installer problem, resolve that installer error rather than downloading npgoogleupdate3.dll separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove a DLL after an update, especially if the file is old or an application is being modified.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent quarantined items.
  5. Expand an entry that refers to the Google application or npgoogleupdate3.dll.
  6. Check its original path and detection details.

Do not restore the file solely because the name looks familiar. Confirm that it came from the expected Google application directory and, where available, that its digital signature identifies Google. Reinstalling the parent application is safer because it obtains a complete, matching installation.

If you confirm a false positive and choose Restore, update Windows Security, update the Google application, and run another scan. If the file came from a random folder or the signature is absent, leave it quarantined and perform a full scan.

Fix 5: Remove an orphaned startup reference

If the error appears immediately after signing in, but Chrome, Earth Pro, or another Google program was already removed, Windows may be trying to launch an old command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First reinstall the relevant Google program, restart, and uninstall it cleanly if you no longer need it. This is safer than deleting registry entries at random.

You can inspect startup items without editing the registry:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an entry associated with the removed Google product.
  4. Select it and choose Disable only after confirming its command or publisher.

For scheduled tasks:

  1. Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Review tasks that clearly belong to Google Update.
  4. Open a task’s Actions tab and verify its path.
  5. Disable or remove an orphaned task only when its target points to a program that has been removed.

Do not delete a task merely because it contains the word Google. Confirm the path first.

Fix 6: Do not copy the DLL or run regsvr32

Copying npgoogleupdate3.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can cause search-order problems and architecture mismatches. It also hides the real issue: the parent application may be missing several files, not just this one.

regsvr32 is usually not appropriate here. The command works only when a DLL exposes a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; a runtime or plugin DLL may not provide one. Running it can produce an “entry-point not found” error and will not restore a missing Google Update installation.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file. For this error, the official application installer is the correct registration and repair mechanism.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when installers are also failing

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Google DLL, but system servicing corruption can prevent an application installer from working correctly.

Install pending Windows updates first, then run the tools in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry the official Chrome, Earth Pro, or other parent-application installer.

DISM should complete without reporting that the component store could not be repaired. SFC should report whether it found and repaired protected system files. Even a successful result does not mean npgoogleupdate3.dll was restored, so reinstall the Google application afterward.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM makes it unclear what is actually broken, Outbyte PC Repair can show the issues its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the Google application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 8: Check drivers only for a separate hardware error

Graphics drivers, DirectX, .NET, and Visual C++ are normally unrelated to a missing Google Update DLL. Do not install them as a substitute for repairing Chrome, Earth Pro, or the named Google program.

Investigate drivers only if the same application also reports a graphics, display, audio, or device error:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the separate error.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and status.
  6. Use Update driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  7. Restart Windows and retest the application.

If the error separately names VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable matching the application’s architecture from Microsoft’s official package page. An x64 runtime does not replace an x86 dependency for a 32-bit program.

Manually checking every device and matching driver packages is slow when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan; driver installation is handled by the full version, while the Google application’s official reinstall remains the direct solution for npgoogleupdate3.dll.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a cleanup utility, software installation, driver update, or Windows change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
  5. Select a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Choose Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the list.
  8. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the parent-application reinstall path instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling does not recreate the file

A current version of the Google program may no longer use this legacy component. If the application starts normally after reinstalling, the old filename can be ignored.

If the error remains:

  • Confirm that the error names the program you actually reinstalled.
  • Test from a new Windows user account.
  • Check free disk space and disk health.
  • Temporarily investigate whether security software is blocking the installer, using your security product’s documented procedure.
  • Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for the failing program.
  • Look for installer logs created by the Google application.
  • Scan suspicious copies with Windows Security.
  • If an old NPAPI-dependent application is involved, use a newer release or a vendor-supported legacy environment.

Do not keep adding DLL copies from the internet. A missing dependency may be only the visible symptom of a damaged installation, incompatible legacy software, or malware.

FAQ

Is npgoogleupdate3.dll made by Microsoft?

No. It is associated with Google Update, not with Windows. Windows may display the error, but Microsoft does not provide this Google application file as a system component.

Is the file safe?

A correctly located, digitally signed Google copy is consistent with the historical Google Update component. The filename alone proves nothing, because malware can use familiar names. Check the path, signature, file details, and antivirus results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install a 32-bit or 64-bit version?

Known records for this file are 32-bit. The parent application determines what it needs. On 64-bit Windows, do not replace a 32-bit dependency with an x64 DLL.

Should I download the DLL separately?

No. Random DLL downloads may contain malware, the wrong release, or the wrong architecture, and they often leave the damaged application installation unfixed. Use the official installer for the Google program named in the error.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for this DLL by itself. Install a runtime only when the application reports a separate missing runtime file or dependency.

Why does regsvr32 fail?

The file may not expose the registration entry point that regsvr32 requires. That failure is expected for many runtime and plugin DLLs and does not mean the file belongs in a Windows folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I run DISM and SFC?

Run them when Windows Update or application installers are also malfunctioning, or when you suspect broader Windows corruption. They repair Windows components, not normally this third-party Google file.
