nprjplug.dll is a historical RealNetworks file, not a Windows component. If Windows says nprjplug.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the request usually comes from an old RealPlayer, RealJukebox, or Netscape-compatible plugin registration.
The file is identified as RealJukebox Netscape Plugin and belongs to the RealJukebox NS Plugin component. It was commonly installed beneath a RealPlayer folder such as:
C:Program FilesRealRealPlayerNetscape6nprjplug.dll
Older 32-bit installations may instead use:
C:Program Files (x86)RealRealPlayerNetscape6nprjplug.dll
The safest repair is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair or remove that old RealNetworks installation. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

Historical copies have different versions and file details. There is no single version or size that applies to every copy.
What the error means
You may see wording such as:
- “This application failed to start because nprjplug.dll was not found.”
- “The file nprjplug.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: nprjplug.dll.”
- “Error loading nprjplug.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because nprjplug.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot register nprjplug.dll.”
These are reported variations rather than guaranteed wording for every Windows release.
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nprjplug.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another library required by it is missing. That is why copying a DLL from another computer often fails to solve the real problem.

First, identify what is requesting the file
Before repairing anything, determine whether the caller is RealPlayer, RealJukebox, another old media application, or only a leftover startup entry.
Check the error window
If the message names an application, write down its name. If it appears while opening an .rm or .ram file, the associated media player is the most likely caller.
Right-click the affected file, select Open with, and inspect the application currently associated with it. Do not open the file if you do not recognize its source.
Check startup applications
On Windows 11:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for RealPlayer, RealJukebox, RealNetworks, an old media player, or an unknown entry.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location if available.
- Record the executable path before disabling the entry.
On Windows 10, open Task Manager, select the Startup tab, and use the same process.
Disabling a startup entry is a diagnostic step. Restart Windows and see whether the error disappears. If it does, repair or uninstall the application associated with that entry rather than restoring the DLL blindly.
Check scheduled tasks
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions mention RealPlayer, RealJukebox, RealNetworks, or an old media application.
- Open a task and inspect the Actions tab.
- Record the executable path.
- Disable the task temporarily, restart Windows, and check whether the message returns.
Do not delete an unknown task until you have confirmed what program created it.

Fix 1: Repair or remove the RealNetworks program
This is the most likely solution for nprjplug.dll.
RealNetworks identifies RealJukebox and older RealPlayer versions as legacy products whose development and support have ended. If you no longer need the old software, removing it is usually safer than trying to preserve a browser plugin that modern browsers cannot use.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you still need the application
- Close RealPlayer, RealJukebox, and any media-player windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- End any clearly related RealNetworks processes.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select RealPlayer, RealTimes, or the relevant RealNetworks entry.
- Choose Change or Uninstall.
- If a repair option is offered, run it first.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
If the program still fails, reinstall it using the original trustworthy installer. For a currently supported RealPlayer installation, obtain the installer from RealNetworks rather than from a DLL collection site. Do not assume that a current RealPlayer installation includes the historical nprjplug.dll plugin.
If the application is a different old program, reinstall that program from its original vendor media or installer. The correct repair is the parent application, not an isolated copy of the DLL.
If the uninstall entry is missing
RealNetworks has documented cases where reinstalling the product over the existing installation restores the uninstall information. If you choose this route:
- Obtain the installer from RealNetworks.
- Run it without downloading individual DLL files.
- Restart Windows after the installation completes.
- Return to Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the unwanted RealNetworks product.
- Restart Windows again.
- Check Startup apps and Task Scheduler for leftover entries.
If the old application is essential and cannot be reinstalled on modern Windows, treat it as legacy software. Keep it isolated from normal browsing where possible, and do not expect a modern RealPlayer version to reproduce every historical RealJukebox component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original application opens without the DLL message.
- The startup warning no longer appears.
- The related startup task or shortcut no longer requests
nprjplug.dll. - Windows no longer reports a missing module when opening the affected media file.
If the error remains after RealPlayer is removed, another old application or stale registration is probably making the request.
Fix 2: Remove a stale plugin or startup reference
Sometimes the RealNetworks program is already gone, but Windows still attempts to load its plugin.
Check these locations:
- Settings → Apps → Startup
- Task Manager → Startup apps
- Task Scheduler Library
- The Startup folder opened with Windows + R, then
shell:startup - Shortcuts in the Startup folder
- The old application’s uninstall entry
- Browser plugin folders belonging to an obsolete Netscape or Mozilla installation
If you find a shortcut whose target points to a deleted RealPlayer executable, remove the shortcut after confirming its purpose.
For a registry-based startup entry, use care:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
regeditand press Enter. - Check the relevant
Runentries under the current user and local machine. - Look for a clearly identified RealNetworks command.
- Export the key as a backup before removing only the obsolete entry.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete unrelated registry values merely because they contain a DLL path.

A historical plugin registration may point to a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)RealRealPlayerNetscape6nprjplug.dll
That path is evidence of an old plugin registration, not a recommendation to recreate the file there. Remove the obsolete parent application or registration instead.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
If the message began immediately after an antivirus scan, the security program may have quarantined the file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review the detection and its file path.
- Check whether the file came from a genuine RealNetworks installation.
- Review the publisher, path, and available signature information.
- Restore the file only if you have verified that it belongs to the legitimate installation and the detection is a documented false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to restore an unknown DLL. If the file is suspicious, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent application from its original trustworthy source.
A file name alone does not prove safety. Verify the complete path and publisher. A copy found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected system location deserves additional caution.
Fix 4: Handle a 32-bit compatibility problem
Available metadata identifies nprjplug.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
This creates two common mistakes:
- Installing a 32-bit plugin into a 64-bit application.
- Copying a 32-bit DLL into
System32orSysWOW64and expecting Windows to register it globally.
The correct procedure is:
- Identify the application requesting the file.
- Confirm whether that application is 32-bit.
- Reinstall the matching 32-bit version of the parent application.
- Allow its installer to place files in its own program directory.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not choose a DLL based only on the file name. Historical copies differ, and the caller may require additional RealNetworks components.
If Windows reports that the program is “not designed to run on Windows,” reinstall the application rather than mixing files from different releases.
Fix 5: Use System Restore only for a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a RealPlayer removal, cleanup utility, or other recent system change.
- Press the Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review affected programs before confirming.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling the correct application. If it restores the old error, uninstall the legacy program properly and remove its leftover startup entry.

Fix 6: Check Windows system files only when Windows itself is damaged
nprjplug.dll is a third-party RealNetworks plugin, not a protected Windows component. SFC and DISM will not normally download or recreate it.
Use these tools when Windows itself is malfunctioning, protected system files are failing, or several unrelated Windows components are damaged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:

- Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but nprjplug.dll is still missing, that result is expected because these tools repair Windows components, not obsolete RealNetworks files.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the real problem remains an old startup reference. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions are handled by the full version, while reinstalling the RealNetworks program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Do not treat drivers or Windows Features as the solution
nprjplug.dll is not a hardware driver. Updating a graphics, audio, printer, or chipset driver will not normally recreate it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Device Manager is useful only if the old media application also reports a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source.
Windows Features are also not the normal source of this DLL. You may check them by opening Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off, but enabling legacy components will not install the RealNetworks plugin.
When several devices are stale, manually matching drivers means hunting hardware IDs, vendors, and versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, with installation handled by the full version; it is not a replacement for reinstalling the old RealNetworks application that actually owns nprjplug.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, install dependencies, or repair a damaged application.
nprjplug.dll was a Netscape-compatible browser plugin discovered through old plugin mechanisms. It was not a normal COM or ActiveX component that should be repaired with:
regsvr32 nprjplug.dll
or:
regsvr32 /u nprjplug.dll
Those commands may produce errors such as “entry point was not found” or “module could not be loaded.” That result does not identify the correct repair.

What not to do
Do not:
- Download
nprjplug.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32. - Copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Replace it with a file from another computer.
- Run
regsvr32repeatedly. - Disable antivirus protection to force an unverified copy to load.
- Assume every historical version is interchangeable.
- Use SFC as a direct replacement tool for this third-party file.
- Expect Windows Update, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ to provide it.
- Install an old browser plugin into a current browser.
An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different historical release, or still fail because another dependency is missing. It also leaves the broken RealNetworks installation or stale startup entry untouched.
FAQ
Is nprjplug.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a historical RealNetworks plugin associated with RealJukebox and old RealPlayer installations.
Is it safe?
The legitimate file came from RealNetworks, but the file name alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Verify its path, publisher, digital signature where available, and antivirus history.
Should I reinstall RealPlayer?
Only if you still need the related application. If the error comes from old RealJukebox software, a current RealPlayer installation may not contain the exact historical plugin. Reinstall the original parent application when compatibility is essential, or uninstall the legacy software if it is no longer needed.
Can I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after confirming that the quarantined file came from a legitimate RealNetworks installation and the alert is a verified false positive. Otherwise, keep it quarantined and reinstall the parent application.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does the error appear during startup when RealPlayer is not open?
A leftover startup shortcut, scheduled task, registry entry, or plugin registration may still reference the deleted file. Check Startup apps, Task Scheduler, the Startup folder, and installed applications.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally, no. They repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party RealNetworks plugin.
Does copying the file to SysWOW64 fix a 32-bit error?
No. A 32-bit application should receive its files through its own installer and program directory. Copying DLLs between Windows system folders can create additional loading and version problems.
Can modern Chrome, Edge, or Firefox use it?
You should not expect them to support this old Netscape Plugin API component. Repairing the file will not restore obsolete plugin support in a current browser.
Recommended Free Tools
What if an old application absolutely requires it?
Reinstall that application from its original trustworthy installer and run it in an isolated legacy-software setup where practical. If no compatible installer exists, replacing one DLL is unlikely to be enough because the application may depend on several old files and registration entries.
