If Windows reports that raschap.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows system files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is named Remote Access PPP CHAP. It supports CHAP authentication used by Point-to-Point Protocol connections, including some Remote Access Service, dial-up and VPN scenarios. A damaged or deleted copy can prevent a networking feature or application from starting, but a VPN authentication failure can also occur when raschap.dll is completely healthy.
Check the error before repairing anything
These messages all point to a similar class of problem:
- “The program can’t start because raschap.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because raschap.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading raschap.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting raschap.dll.”
- “raschap.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording does not prove that the file itself is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is unavailable.

Write down the full message, the program or VPN connection that triggered it, and whether the problem began after a Windows update, cleanup operation, driver installation or antivirus alert.
Where raschap.dll should be located
On 64-bit Windows, the normal native system copy is:
C:WindowsSystem32raschap.dll
The 32-bit copy used by 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows is normally:
C:WindowsSysWOW64raschap.dll
On 32-bit Windows, the system copy is normally in:
C:WindowsSystem32raschap.dll
Despite its name, System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files because of Windows’ WOW64 compatibility system. See Microsoft’s explanation of the File System Redirector.
Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the other way around. The two files serve different architectures.
Check whether the file exists
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Search for
raschap.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64.
You can check from an elevated Command Prompt as well:
dir "%windir%System32raschap.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64raschap.dll"
If the first command finds the file, that does not prove it is genuine or undamaged. Continue with the signature and system repair steps below.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components in an inconsistent state. Install updates before running repair commands.

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Download and install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft documents this process in its guide to installing Windows updates.
After restarting, retry the VPN, dial-up connection or application. If the same error remains, continue rather than repeatedly checking for updates.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
This is the most important repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of raschap.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected feature again.
A successful SFC repair normally reports that Windows Resource Protection found corrupted files and successfully repaired them. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the file may be present and healthy, so investigate the VPN, application, dependency or security software instead.
If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches the installed Windows version closely. An unrelated or older source can create additional servicing problems. Microsoft explains this process in Repair a Windows Image.
Running DISM and SFC manually is the safest first repair, but identifying which component changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
If SFC cannot repair raschap.dll
If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Check the log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- If the problem continues, retry SFC in Safe Mode where appropriate.
- Use a matching Windows installation source with DISM.
- Consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair if the component store remains damaged.
Do not extract raschap.dll from a random archive to bypass the error.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and the file signature
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a system file after a detection or cleanup operation. A file with the correct name is not automatically safe, particularly if it is outside the Windows directories.

Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect any event involving
raschap.dll. - Check the recorded file path and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file if you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft file and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device. If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Verify the digital signature
- Open
%windir%System32. - Right-click
raschap.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature.
- Click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature from Microsoft.
On 64-bit Windows, check the copy in SysWOW64 if that is the file involved. You can also inspect a file from PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32raschap.dll"
A valid Microsoft signature, the expected Windows path and a successful DISM/SFC repair are stronger evidence than the filename alone. An unsigned copy in an application folder should not be whitelisted merely because it is called raschap.dll.
Fix 4: Repair the affected VPN, Windows feature or application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If Windows repairs successfully but one VPN or application still fails, the damaged item may be its configuration or installation rather than raschap.dll.
Recreate or repair a Windows VPN connection
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Network & internet.
- Choose VPN.
- Select the affected connection.
- Open its settings and confirm the server address, VPN type and sign-in method.
- If the profile is clearly damaged, remove it.
- Select Add VPN and recreate it using the settings supplied by the VPN provider or workplace administrator.
- Test the connection.
Do not change authentication settings randomly. PPP CHAP relates to authentication, but a failed VPN negotiation, certificate problem, incorrect password or incompatible security protocol can produce a failure even when the DLL is healthy.
Repair a single third-party application
If the error appears only when launching one application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Retest the application.
If Repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source. A program-specific reinstall is appropriate when the application has damaged its own files, but it should not involve placing a downloaded raschap.dll beside the program executable.
Reinstall an optional Windows feature only when relevant
Do not toggle Windows features at random to repair this DLL. If the error began after an optional feature was disabled or damaged:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Clear the affected feature and select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Windows Features again.
- Re-enable the feature.
- Restart and test.
If the feature is not clearly connected to the error, use DISM and SFC instead. raschap.dll is supplied by Windows, not by a general-purpose Visual C++, DirectX or .NET installer.

Fix 5: Check drivers only when the evidence points to one
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A network adapter driver does not normally restore a missing Windows PPP DLL. Investigate drivers when Device Manager reports an adapter error, the adapter disappeared, or the VPN problem began immediately after a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon or an adapter that is missing.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the connection.
If the issue began directly after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Otherwise, obtain the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer. Do not replace raschap.dll with a driver package.
Hunting through several hardware vendors and determining which driver is actually stale can take longer than the repair itself. Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
System Restore is useful when the error started immediately after a Windows update, cleanup utility, security-product action, application installation or driver change. It only works if a suitable restore point exists and System Protection was enabled.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected connection or application.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers and updates.
Fix 7: Reinstall the current Windows version
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer
On Windows 11, Microsoft provides a recovery option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and online.
- Restart when requested.
- Test
raschap.dllagain.
If this option is unavailable or does not repair Windows, perform an in-place installation using official Windows installation media. Start Setup from within Windows and choose Keep personal files and apps. Selecting the wrong option can remove applications or personal data, so confirm the choice before continuing. Microsoft’s instructions are in Reinstall Windows with installation media.
Why downloading or registering raschap.dll is the wrong fix
There is no legitimate raschap.dll redistributable that should normally be installed separately. Do not download this file from random DLL websites or copy it from another computer.
That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Windows build, mix 32-bit and 64-bit files, bypass Windows servicing, or fail because a dependency is missing. It can also turn a recoverable Windows component problem into a more difficult version mismatch.
regsvr32 is also normally inappropriate. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. raschap.dll is a Windows networking component, not a typical self-registering ActiveX control. Running commands such as these is therefore not a standard repair:

If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that is expected for a DLL that is not designed for this type of registration. Use Windows servicing instead.
What usually causes the error

Historical Windows releases contain different file versions, and current Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds do not necessarily use the same version. Never select a replacement based only on a version number or file size.

Is raschap.dll a virus?
No. The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component named Remote Access PPP CHAP. A file with that name can still be malicious if it is outside the expected Windows directory or lacks a valid Microsoft signature.
Does raschap.dll belong to a game?
It is not a game runtime. A game or application may display the error while starting, but that does not mean the program should ship its own replacement. Repair Windows first, then repair the application if the problem affects only that application.
Should I put raschap.dll in the application folder?
No. Copying it into an application directory can create an architecture mismatch, load an unauthorized file and conceal the underlying Windows problem.
Does raschap.dll support VPN connections?
It supports part of PPP authentication used in some Remote Access and VPN scenarios. A VPN can still fail for unrelated reasons, including credentials, certificates, negotiation settings or network connectivity.

The message can refer to a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. DISM and SFC can repair protected Windows components and dependencies. If those complete successfully, investigate the application or VPN configuration.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX or .NET?
Not specifically for raschap.dll. No official Microsoft guidance identifies those packages as a normal replacement source for this Windows component.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include the Windows version and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the exact error text, the application or VPN involved, the file path found on disk, recent updates or cleanup activity, antivirus history, and the results of DISM and SFC. That information distinguishes a missing Windows file from an unrelated authentication or driver problem.
