If Windows shows “NSc.exe – Bad Image”, update Norton first: open Norton, run LiveUpdate repeatedly until it reports that the product is current, then restart Windows. If the popup returns, identify the DLL named in the dialog, repair Windows system files when indicated, and use Norton’s official Remove and Reinstall tool if updating does not help. The message usually means that Windows cannot load NSc.exe or one of its dependent DLLs because the file is damaged, incompatible, or mismatched; it does not, by itself, prove that the computer is infected.
What the NSc.exe Bad Image message means
NSc.exe is an executable associated with Norton security software. Windows may identify NSc.exe in the title bar even when the file that actually failed is a separate DLL loaded by Norton. A Bad Image dialog is Windows’ way of reporting that an executable or library is not valid for the current process. Typical reasons include a damaged file, an interrupted installation, incompatible versions of related components, or a conflict introduced by an update.

The wording can be accompanied by an application error such as 0xc0000142. Treat that code as a launch failure to investigate with the same sequence below. The popup alone is not a malware diagnosis. Malware is one possible cause of damaged or replaced program files, so scanning remains sensible, but deleting NSc.exe or downloading a replacement DLL from an unverified website can make the problem and your security posture worse.
Read the complete dialog before changing anything
Capture the exact text or take a screenshot before closing the message. The path in the second line often provides more useful evidence than the NSc.exe title.

- Record the named file and folder. Note whether the dialog points to NSc.exe itself or to a DLL in another product’s folder.
- Record the error code. Include the complete code, including leading zeroes, if one appears.
- Record versions and timing. Write down your Windows edition and version, Norton product and version, and the update or installation that occurred immediately before the first popup.
- Note the trigger. Record whether it appears at sign-in, when Norton opens, after waking the PC, or when another application starts.
Do not rename, delete, or replace a file while you are still collecting this information. A named third-party DLL can point to the component that needs updating, not to a defective NSc.exe installation.
Common dependency paths and what they suggest
Bonjour: mdsnNSP.dll
A 2022 Norton Community report involving Norton 360 Deluxe 22.22.7.11 identified C:Program Files (x86)BonjourmdsnNSP.dll. In that situation, Bonjour was the named dependency. Check whether Bonjour was recently installed or updated and use the software’s own supported repair or update process. Do not download a standalone copy of mdsnNSP.dll.
Dell security software: DPoFeedb.dll
Another report named a Dell DPoFeedb.dll path. If your dialog points to that file, investigate the Dell component and its recent updates rather than treating the Norton executable as the only suspect.

A 2024 report from a new Windows 11 computer discussed a Citrix ICA Client ctxapclient32.dll path. This is a useful reminder that the same NSc.exe title can be produced by a compatibility problem between Norton and another installed application. Check the owning application’s current release and support guidance before removing anything.

Fix 1: Run Norton LiveUpdate until it is current
Norton identifies program updates as a way to extend operating-system and hardware compatibility and correct program errors. This is the lowest-impact repair and should be attempted before removing the product.
- Open the Norton security application from the Start menu or its taskbar icon.
- Open the product’s update control and choose LiveUpdate.
- Allow every program, definition, and compatibility update to install. If LiveUpdate requests a restart, restart Windows.
- Open Norton again after Windows starts and run LiveUpdate a second time. Repeat until the application reports that it is current.
- Restart Windows once more, even if the final update did not explicitly request it. Test the action that previously produced the popup.
If the error stops after this cycle, the cause was likely an outdated or mismatched Norton component. Keep the exact Norton version in your notes in case the message returns.
Fix 2: Update or repair the application named by the DLL
When the dialog names Bonjour, Citrix, Dell software, or another third-party component, treat that path as a separate troubleshooting branch.
- Identify the application that owns the folder in the path. The product name is usually visible in the folder name or in Installed apps.
- Check that application for its own updates, repair option, or current Windows 11/Windows 10 compatibility statement.
- If the DLL appeared immediately after an update, use the vendor’s supported rollback or repair process rather than copying files from another computer.
- Restart Windows and test Norton again.
Do not solve a dependency error by deleting the DLL. Other programs may require it, and removing it can turn one startup message into multiple application failures.

Fix 3: Check Windows system files
If LiveUpdate and the dependency owner’s repair do not resolve the popup, Windows integrity checks can detect and repair damaged operating-system files. These commands are general Windows diagnostics, not a Norton-specific hotfix.
- Open the Start menu, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - If System File Checker reports that it could not repair all files, run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthin the same elevated window. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannowagain. - Restart Windows and test the Norton action that triggered the error.
Keep the command results. A message saying that files were repaired supports a Windows-file explanation; a clean result shifts attention back to Norton and the third-party DLL named in the popup.
Fix 4: Use Norton Remove and Reinstall
Norton’s supported escalation is its Remove and Reinstall tool when updating and restarting do not resolve the problem. This is a larger change than LiveUpdate because it removes the existing installation before placing a fresh copy.
- Save your work and close other applications.
- Obtain the Remove and Reinstall utility from official Norton Support, not from a file-download mirror.
- Run the utility with administrator permission and choose the option that removes and reinstalls Norton.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, allow the required restart, and let the reinstall finish before launching other security software installers.
- After the new installation opens, sign in if requested, run LiveUpdate until current, and restart Windows again.
Because removal and reinstall changes the security installation, do not interrupt it by powering off the computer. Keep another trusted security layer active during the shortest practical interval, but avoid running multiple real-time security products together after Norton returns unless their vendors explicitly support that arrangement.

What Norton version history tells you
Version and date details can make attribution much stronger than the popup alone. Norton Community staff member Gayathri_R wrote in 2022: “We have released a hotfix for 22.22.7.14 that will fix this issue.” That statement followed reports involving Norton 360 Deluxe 22.22.7.11. If your installation is on the affected older build, completing LiveUpdate is especially important.

Norton notes that older Windows releases that are no longer fully supported may continue receiving security definitions without receiving the same application updates. If your operating system is outside the current support path, an NSc.exe compatibility failure may persist until Windows is brought to a supported release.

Security precautions and mistakes to avoid
- Do not download DLLs from random sites. A file with the right name can be modified, incompatible, or malicious.
- Do not delete NSc.exe to silence the popup. It is part of Norton’s installation, and removal can disable protection or create additional errors.
- Do not conclude that the popup proves malware. Scan with a trusted, current security tool if you have other warning signs, but investigate version and dependency mismatches first.
- Do not stop after one update attempt. Run LiveUpdate until it explicitly reports that the product is current, then restart.
- Do not omit the named path when asking for help. Support cannot distinguish a Norton binary problem from a Bonjour, Dell, or Citrix conflict without that detail.
When to escalate to support
Contact Norton Support when the error survives a fully current LiveUpdate cycle, a restart, and the supported Remove and Reinstall process. If the dialog names a third-party DLL, contact that software vendor as well. Provide a concise evidence bundle:
- The exact popup text and error code.
- The complete DLL or executable path shown in the dialog.
- Your Norton product and version, including whether it updated immediately before the failure.
- Your Windows edition and version.
- The date the popup began and what action triggers it.
- The results of
sfc /scannowand DISM, if you ran them.
This information separates a known Norton-version issue from a dependency conflict and gives the responsible vendor enough detail to reproduce or correct the problem.
Bottom line
NSc.exe Bad Image is usually a file-compatibility or integrity problem involving Norton or a DLL that Norton loads. Run LiveUpdate to the current build and restart first; then follow the named DLL to Bonjour, Citrix, Dell, or another owning application when applicable. Use SFC and DISM for suspected Windows corruption, and reserve Norton Remove and Reinstall for failures that survive those lower-impact steps.
