“The code execution cannot proceed because nshhttp.dll was not found” means Windows could not load a required system component. nshhttp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file described as “HTTP netsh DLL”, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, game, or driver file.

It is a NetShell helper used by netsh for HTTP and networking command contexts. Microsoft documents that NetShell loads helper DLLs and calls their InitHelperDll entry point. The safest repair is therefore to repair Windows itself, not to download a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the branch that matches what you saw:

  • The message says nshhttp.dll was not found or could not be loaded when Windows or an application starts: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • The message includes InitHelperDll and error 10107 or 11003 while running a network reset: repair the Winsock or TCP/IP configuration, then repair Windows if necessary.
  • The file disappeared after an antivirus alert: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
  • The file exists but has an unusual location, invalid signature, or mismatched architecture: remove the manually copied version and restore the Windows component through servicing.
  • The issue began after a VPN, firewall, network filter, or adapter change: reset Winsock and investigate that software or driver.
  • Only one application reports the problem: repair or reinstall that application, but do not assume it owns nshhttp.dll. No specific game or commercial program has been verified as the source of this Windows file.

Before changing anything, record the complete error, the command or program that produced it, and whether the problem started after an update, cleanup utility, antivirus action, VPN installation, or malware removal.

What nshhttp.dll is and where it belongs

The normal Windows location is:

%windir%System32nshhttp.dll

On a typical installation, that means:

C:WindowsSystem32nshhttp.dll

Windows may also maintain architecture-specific copies through WOW64. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes use the redirected system area that normally involves:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

System32 and SysWOW64 are confusingly named, but this separation is normal. Do not copy a file between them simply because an application displays a DLL error. The copy must match the Windows build and the process architecture.

File versions and sizes vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing branch. There is no official standalone nshhttp.dll download package.

First, check the file without replacing it

You can verify whether a copy exists and inspect its signature before repairing Windows.

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter %windir%System32.
  4. Find nshhttp.dll.
  5. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. On the Details tab, look for the description HTTP netsh DLL.
  7. On the Digital Signatures tab, select the signature and click Details.
  8. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

If the file is missing, has a bad signature, appears in a temporary or application-download folder, or was manually copied from another PC, do not keep trying random replacements. Continue with the Windows repair steps below.

Fix 1: install updates, then repair Windows

This is the correct first repair for a missing, deleted, corrupted, or mismatched system component.

Install pending updates

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
  6. Test the command or program again.

If the error remains, repair the component store and protected files.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Test netsh or the affected program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks and replaces protected Windows files. Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC order in its System File Checker instructions.

Success means SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it found no integrity violations, and the original error no longer appears. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source rather than downloading nshhttp.dll separately. Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running SFC and DISM repeatedly without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issue and show what needs attention, while repair actions are completed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate fix for a damaged system DLL.

Fix 2: repair Winsock and TCP/IP for netsh errors

A message such as this is different from a simple missing-file error:

Initialization function InitHelperDll in NSHHTTP.DLL failed to start with error code 10107

This has been reported while resetting network settings. Error 10107 means WSASYSCALLFAILURE, while 11003 means WSANO_RECOVERY. These codes can indicate a Winsock provider, namespace catalog, or lookup problem; they do not prove that nshhttp.dll itself is missing.

Use this branch when the error appears during netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, VPN use, firewall changes, or connectivity troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
netsh winsock show catalog
  1. Then run:
netsh winsock reset
  1. Reset TCP/IP and save the output to a log:
netsh int ip reset C:resetlog.txt
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the network connection and repeat the command that originally failed.

netsh winsock reset removes custom Winsock Layered Service Providers. netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP configuration. Microsoft documents both procedures for Winsock and TCP/IP.

This reset can remove network customizations, so you may need to reconnect to VPN software or reconfigure certain network tools. It does not recreate a missing nshhttp.dll. If the DLL is absent or fails its signature check, return to DISM and SFC.

If the problem returns after a VPN, firewall, antivirus, proxy, or traffic-filtering installation, temporarily review or uninstall that recently added software using its official removal process. Do not disable security software permanently.

Fix 3: check antivirus quarantine safely

A security product may quarantine a Windows component after a detection or a false positive.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Find the event involving nshhttp.dll.
  6. Expand it and inspect the original path, detection name, and action.

Do not immediately restore the file. Restore it only when the path is the expected Windows system location, the file is a genuine Microsoft-signed copy, and you have determined that the detection is false. Microsoft describes the available quarantine actions in its Protection History guidance.

After dealing with the detection, run a full scan. Then run DISM and SFC so Windows can restore the component through its normal servicing mechanism. If other files are being quarantined or corruption repeatedly returns, treat the situation as possible malware or storage damage rather than a single DLL problem.

Fix 4: remove a wrong manual replacement

A DLL copied from another computer, an old Windows installation, or a download archive may be:

  • the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
  • from a different Windows release;
  • unsigned or modified;
  • dependent on incompatible system files; or
  • placed in a location where an application loads it before the genuine Windows copy.

Do not place a downloaded copy beside an application or inside System32. Do not use regsvr32 to register it. NetShell helpers use InitHelperDll; regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the NetShell entry point here and regsvr32 here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you know a replacement was copied manually, remove only the incorrect copy you introduced, if doing so will not damage another application, and run DISM followed by SFC. For a persistent mismatch, use matching Windows installation media as the repair source.

Fix 5: update a network driver or recent networking software

A network adapter driver does not supply nshhttp.dll, but a damaged or incompatible driver can trigger networking failures that appear alongside NetShell errors.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter.
  5. Select Properties > Driver.
  6. Note the provider, date, and version.
  7. Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

If the failure began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if available. For a laptop or branded desktop, prefer the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model.

Driver hunting is often the slowest part because several network devices and versions can look similar. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while driver installation is completed by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace a missing Windows system DLL.

Fix 6: repair Windows when normal servicing fails

If DISM cannot repair the image, the error affects every user account and multiple Windows networking tools, or corruption returns after each repair, escalate in this order:

  1. Use System Restore if the issue began after a recent update, driver, or software installation. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the failure. Microsoft’s System Restore guide explains the process.
  2. On supported Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. See Microsoft’s Windows Update reinstall instructions.
  3. Use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Start setup.exe from within Windows and select Keep personal files and apps when offered. Do not choose a clean installation unless you have backed up your data and intend to remove the existing installation. Microsoft documents the process here.

What not to do

  • Do not download nshhttp.dll from a random DLL website.
  • Do not trust a file solely because its filename is correct.
  • Do not run regsvr32 for this NetShell helper.
  • Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because an error mentions a DLL.
  • Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system location, or vice versa.
  • Do not assume netsh winsock reset repairs the DLL itself.

Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or no useful fix for the underlying Windows problem. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, or the official repair option built into Windows.

FAQ

Is nshhttp.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL with the description HTTP netsh DLL. Its role is to support NetShell networking and HTTP command contexts.

Is it part of a game or Visual C++?

No verified game, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET release is the source of this file. Reinstalling those runtimes usually will not repair a Windows NetShell component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register nshhttp.dll with regsvr32?

No. NetShell loads helper DLLs through InitHelperDll, not the COM registration mechanism used by regsvr32.

Why does SysWOW64 matter?

64-bit Windows separates 64-bit and 32-bit system components. A 32-bit process may use the WOW64-redirected system area, while a 64-bit process uses the native system location. The correct repair is Windows servicing, not manually choosing a folder.

Does netsh winsock reset fix a missing file?

No. It can repair a broken Winsock catalog or provider configuration. It cannot reconstruct a deleted or corrupted nshhttp.dll.

When should I suspect malware or disk damage?

Suspect a broader problem when the file repeatedly disappears, its signature is invalid, multiple protected files fail, antivirus reports repeated detections, or DISM and SFC cannot keep the system repaired. Run a full scan, back up important data, and investigate storage health before replacing individual files.
