“The program can’t start because nssckbi.dll is missing from your computer.” The nssckbi.dll error usually means the Mozilla NSS-based application that owns the file is damaged, incomplete, or launching from the wrong folder.
Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32. nssckbi.dll is an application-private Mozilla Network Security Services module, not a normal Windows component.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- Firefox or another Mozilla/NSS application will not start: repair or reinstall that application first.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Protection History and the antivirus quarantine.
- The error appears after an update or when using an old shortcut: identify the executable path and remove stale installations or shortcuts.
- The file exists but still will not load: check architecture, digital signature, and missing dependencies.
- Several Windows components are failing: run DISM and SFC after checking the application installation.
- A different error names a driver or runtime: repair that named component, not
nssckbi.dll.
What nssckbi.dll actually does
nssckbi.dll is the Windows form of NSS’s built-in trusted-root certificate module. NSS loads it through its PKCS#11 mechanism to access a bundled set of trusted root certificate authorities.
Those root CAs help an application validate certificates during TLS connections. In practical terms, they help determine whether a website or server certificate chains back to a trusted authority. The file is not:

Firefox is a prominent application that uses Mozilla NSS components, but other software can embed NSS and ship its own copy. The correct copy belongs beside the executable and other NSS files installed by that application.
For Firefox, the application is normally installed under one of these folders:
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox
C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefox
Do not choose a replacement by file size or by an online version table. The correct file depends on the application build and architecture.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution because interrupted updates, damaged files, and incomplete installations are the usual causes.

Identify the application first
If the error dialog names the program, start there. If it does not, use one of these methods:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- Close the dialog without launching the shortcut.
You can also identify the process from Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the application, updater, or launcher that was running immediately before the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
For Firefox, check whether the shortcut points to the current Mozilla Firefox installation rather than an old directory. Multiple installations can leave an old shortcut or updater trying to load files from a folder that no longer exists.
Run the official installer over the existing installation
- Exit the affected application.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- End the application’s updater or launcher if it is still running.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website.
- Run the installer.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Install it into the existing application location when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program from its newly installed shortcut.
An over-install normally replaces missing or damaged application files while leaving the user profile intact. If the program starts, opens a page or project normally, and the same error does not return after another restart, the repair worked.
Perform a clean application reinstall if necessary
Use this when the official installer reports success but the error remains.
- Back up important application data and confirm where the user profile is stored.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
- Check the old installation directory and remove only leftover program files belonging to that application.
- Download a fresh installer from the developer’s official site.
- Install the application again.
- Test it before copying back extensions or custom configuration.
Do not delete a Firefox or other application profile just because the program file is missing. A profile can contain bookmarks, saved settings, extensions, or other personal data. Test with a new profile only when the repaired application still fails and the profile is suspected.
For an application other than Firefox, use its own repair option, installer, or launcher function such as Verify files. The application vendor’s installer is the source that can restore the matching nssckbi.dll.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update or scan.

- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nssckbi.dllor the affected application. - Read the detection details, file path, and action taken.
If the file was quarantined, do not restore it automatically. First confirm that:
- The file was inside the expected application directory.
- The application came from its official installer.
- The publisher and installation source are trusted.
- The detection is not associated with a modified or unofficial copy.
Reinstalling the signed application is generally safer than restoring an isolated file. If the antivirus detects the newly installed file again, leave it quarantined and scan the installer and computer rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Check the executable path and stale installations
A present file does not help if the program is launching from another directory.
- Right-click the failing shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Compare the Target path with the folder where the application is currently installed.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Remove obsolete shortcuts from the desktop, Start menu, or taskbar.
- Pin the current executable or create a new shortcut from the active installation folder.
- Check Task Manager for an old updater or launcher that starts automatically.
Historical NSS profile behavior can also leave a profile referring to an older module path. If reinstalling does not help, test the application with a new profile. For Firefox, use its profile-management or troubleshooting options rather than manually editing NSS module files.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file integrity
A 32-bit application needs its matching 32-bit application files. A 64-bit application needs the corresponding 64-bit build. Mixing files from different releases can produce loader errors even when the filename is correct.
Check these points:
- Is the application installed under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86)? - Does the vendor provide a 32-bit and 64-bit installer?
- Is the shortcut launching the intended installation?
- Did you copy files from another computer or an older release?
- Does the file sit beside the application executable and related NSS files?
To inspect the file:
- Right-click
nssckbi.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Review the product and file information.
- Open Digital Signatures if that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A valid signature does not by itself prove that the file belongs to the application currently being launched, but an unsigned or unexpectedly located file is a reason to reinstall from the official source.
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that nssckbi.dll exists but a dependency cannot be loaded. Do not replace it with a differently versioned DLL. Reinstall the complete application so its related libraries are restored together.
Fix 5: Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage folders for application DLLs. NSS expects its module in the product’s own installation directory, where the application can load the matching files and configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Copying nssckbi.dll system-wide can:
- Create version conflicts between applications
- Pair the module with incompatible NSS libraries
- Bypass the application’s normal update process
- Make future diagnosis harder
- Introduce a tampered or malicious file
The same warning applies to copying a DLL from another PC, an old backup, or a generic DLL download page.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. nssckbi.dll is an NSS PKCS#11 module, not a COM or ActiveX server.
Running a command such as this is not a repair:
regsvr32 nssckbi.dll
It can produce a registration error because the file is not designed for that workflow. Repair the owning application instead.
Fix 7: Check Windows components only when symptoms are broader
SFC and DISM normally repair protected Windows components. They do not usually recreate an application-private Mozilla NSS DLL. Use them when Windows itself is unstable, several built-in applications fail, or there is evidence of system corruption.

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal.
- Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the affected application and test it again.
The manual process involves waiting through scans and interpreting logs without always knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned nssckbi.dll.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the application still shows the same error, that result does not prove the application DLL was restored. Return to the application installer and its actual executable path.

A graphics, chipset, storage, or network driver does not normally provide nssckbi.dll. Do not reinstall drivers just because this filename appears in an application error.
Check drivers only if you also see a device-specific error, crashes across several applications, or a Windows event naming a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Manually hunting through many driver packages can make it unclear which device is actually stale. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the NSS application.
Windows Features and common runtimes
Turning Windows Features on or off will not normally install nssckbi.dll.
To inspect optional Windows components:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features without changing them blindly.
Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and device drivers can matter when a different error explicitly names one of them. None is the normal source of nssckbi.dll, so installing random runtime bundles is unlikely to fix this particular failure.
When System Restore or malware scanning is justified
Use System Restore when the failure began immediately after a recent application installation, update, or system change and normal application repair failed.

FAQ
Is nssckbi.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an application-private Mozilla NSS module. Windows does not normally install it as a protected operating-system component.
Does every copy belong to Firefox?
No. Firefox is a common example, but any application embedding Mozilla NSS can ship its own copy. Identify the executable and installation folder before repairing anything.
Can I download nssckbi.dll by itself?
You should not. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, incompatible root certificates, or a mismatched build. Restore it through the owning application’s official installer.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
The file itself may be corrupted, incompatible, unsigned, or blocked. The message can also mean that a dependency required by nssckbi.dll is missing. Reinstall the complete application rather than replacing one file.
Should I run regsvr32?
No. nssckbi.dll is not a self-registering COM DLL. regsvr32 is not the correct repair method.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep the matching file in the application’s own directory and repair that application if it is absent.
