certca.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Active Directory Certificate Services, not a Visual C++ or game-specific runtime. If Windows says certca.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file’s embedded description is “Microsoft® Active Directory Certificate Services CA.” Active Directory Certificate Services, or AD CS, is a Windows Server role that issues and manages certificates used for identity, encryption, signing, and trust.
Although AD CS is primarily a Windows Server feature, certificate and trust operations are shared Windows functionality. That is why certca.dll can appear in an ordinary application or game crash log. A module listed in a crash report was loaded during the failure, but that does not prove the DLL caused the crash.
A genuine copy normally belongs in:
C:WindowsSystem32certca.dllfor the 64-bit Windows system componentC:WindowsSysWOW64certca.dllfor the 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not swap files between these folders.

Causes and symptoms
| What you see | What it usually means | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “certca.dll is missing from your computer” | The file is absent, quarantined, or Windows component storage is damaged | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because certca.dll was not found” | Windows or an application could not locate the file or a required dependency | Repair Windows and check the application |
| “Error loading certca.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Run DISM and SFC; do not copy random DLLs |
| “certca.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | The file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, or an impostor | Check its path and Microsoft signature |
| Only one game or application fails | That program may be damaged even though Windows is healthy | Repair or reinstall the affected program |
| Antivirus removed the file | Windows Security may have quarantined it, or a suspicious copy may have been detected | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| The file exists but still will not load | A dependency, component-store issue, architecture mismatch, or application problem may be involved | Run system repairs and inspect the application event log |
Error lists on generic DLL-indexing pages are only possible search variants. They do not establish which application produced the error or prove that certca.dll is the underlying cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or failed Windows update can leave protected system components incomplete.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not move straight to a DLL download.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for a missing or damaged certca.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which Windows uses to restore protected files.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer once more.
- Test the application.
A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them indicates that SFC made a repair. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Windows Update cannot provide repair files, DISM can use matching installation media:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source with a real Windows installation source matching your installed edition, language, and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another computer.
Repeatedly hunting for versions and guessing which protected files changed makes manual repair difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Check the file’s location and signature
A legitimate system copy should normally be under the Windows directory and signed by Microsoft.
Recommended Free Tools
Open PowerShell:
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32certca.dll" |
Select-Object FullName, Length, VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32certca.dll"
Check the output:
- FullName should point into your Windows directory.
- The file should have Microsoft product and version information.
- The signature status should normally be
Valid. - The signer should identify Microsoft.
On 64-bit Windows, you can also inspect the 32-bit location:
Get-Item "$env:windirSysWOW64certca.dll" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName, Length, VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSysWOW64certca.dll"
Do not treat a filename alone as proof of legitimacy. A copy in %TEMP%, a user profile, a game folder, or an unknown download directory may be unrelated or malicious. Do not delete a suspicious file before recording its location and scanning the system.
Public inventories show older examples including 32-bit versions 6.2.9200.16384, 6.3.9600.16384, and 10.0.10586.0, plus a 64-bit 10.0.14393.0 example. These lists are incomplete and are not a current compatibility database. Do not substitute an old file into a newer Windows installation.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined a genuine system file, or it may have detected an impostor with the same name.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
certca.dll.
Only restore a file when you can verify that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed copy from the Windows directory and that the detection is a false positive. Do not restore a DLL downloaded from an unofficial source.
After any restoration, restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC again. Microsoft explains this process in its guide to Protection history.
If the file was found outside the Windows component directories, choose the option to remove or quarantine it and run a full scan. For suspected persistent malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline as described in Microsoft’s virus and threat protection guidance.
Fix 5: Repair the application if only one program fails
If Windows works normally and only one game or application reports certca.dll, the program’s installation may be damaged. A crash log can show that the DLL was loaded without proving it caused the crash.

If repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or store. Do not place a downloaded certca.dll beside the application executable. If the application depends on a bundled runtime, its official installer should restore the correct files.

Fix 6: Check for a dependency or architecture problem
“Module not found” does not always mean that certca.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the application.
Check these points:
- Do not place a 32-bit file in
System32. - Do not place a 64-bit file in
SysWOW64. - Do not use a file copied from another Windows release or another PC.
- Run DISM and SFC instead of collecting individual DLLs.
- Review Event Viewer for errors at the same time as the failure.
To open the relevant logs:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the time of the error.
regsvr32 certca.dll is not a normal repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Registering a protected Windows component will not restore a missing file or repair its component store. Microsoft documents the regsvr32 command and the DllRegisterServer requirement.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of a certca.dll repair. Consider driver updates only when Event Viewer, a game launcher, or repeated graphics and device errors point to a broader application or hardware problem.
Use Windows Update first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install only appropriate drivers and restart.
You can also check Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
Driver hunting can mean checking many devices and repeating tests without knowing which change mattered. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or an official application reinstall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files in place. Microsoft provides additional System Restore instructions.
For wider component-store damage, perform an in-place Windows repair using matching official installation media. Start setup from within Windows and choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Confirm the selected edition and architecture before proceeding.
Important note for Windows Server AD CS
If the computer is an actual Windows Server Certification Authority, do not replace certca.dll manually or remove the AD CS role as a test. Back up the certification authority and follow Microsoft’s CA migration and recovery guidance. The CA database, certificate, and private key are operationally important.
Why you should not download certca.dll
Random DLL sites can provide malware, an incorrect Windows version, the wrong architecture, or a file with a misleading name. Even a clean file may not match Windows servicing metadata or the dependencies on your system.

FAQ
Is certca.dll a Visual C++ runtime?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Active Directory Certificate Services. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET usually will not repair it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does certca.dll appear in a game crash log?
The game may have loaded Windows certificate or trust functionality. The module’s presence in a crash log does not prove that it caused the crash. Repair the game if it is the only affected program, and repair Windows if other system components also fail.
Should I use Windows Features to enable AD CS?
Not on a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. AD CS is a Windows Server role. Enabling unrelated Windows features is not a repair for a missing system DLL.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Run DISM and SFC, verify the Microsoft signature and correct Windows path, then check for a missing dependency or damaged application. “Module not found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named file.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs. It does not restore protected Windows files or repair the component store.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use an in-place repair installation when DISM, SFC, System Restore, and application repair do not resolve broader Windows damage. It is preferable to repeatedly copying individual DLLs.
