Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutentcodec.dll is a LightWave file, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact NewTek LightWave release that reports the error, rather than downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into a Windows system folder.
The file is identified as NewTek, AVI Compressor and is associated with LightWave’s Windows AVI functionality. These steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, especially older LightWave installations.

1. Confirm which LightWave installation is failing
Time needed: 5 minutes
Before changing anything, identify the exact program and shortcut that produces the message.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Start LightWave from the shortcut that normally fails.
- Note whether the error appears while launching LightWave or while importing or exporting an AVI file.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the path in Target and Start in.
- Write down the LightWave version shown in the program’s Help or About menu, if the program opens.
- If the error comes from a batch file, render node, plug-in, or copied project folder, identify that executable instead of assuming the main LightWave shortcut is responsible.
Do not replace a DLL until you know which LightWave installation is loading it. A computer can contain multiple releases, portable copies, render folders, or old shortcuts pointing to removed files.

If the error mentions “ntcodec.dll was not found,” “the file is missing or corrupted,” “failed to load ntcodec.dll,” or “the specified module could not be found,” the wording does not always prove that ntcodec.dll itself is absent. The named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
2. Repair or reinstall the matching LightWave release
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the most likely solution for a missing, damaged, or mismatched ntcodec.dll.
First preserve anything you need:
- Licence information
- Custom content directories
- Scenes and objects
- Plug-ins
- Preferences and configuration files
- Render or network settings
Then use the original installer for the same LightWave release, or download that release through your official LightWave user account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try Windows program repair first
If LightWave appears in Windows’ installed-program list:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the LightWave entry.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
If there is no Repair button, or repair does not restore the file, use the original LightWave installer instead.
Reinstall LightWave from a trusted source
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select LightWave and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or the installer obtained through your licensed LightWave account.
- Install the same release required by your projects or plug-ins.
- Start LightWave from the newly installed shortcut.
If the installer offers a repair or overwrite option, use it before removing the program completely.
A successful repair normally allows LightWave to start without the DLL message and restores its AVI-related functions. If launching works but AVI import or export still fails, the installation may be incomplete, the wrong release may be in use, or a dependency may be missing.
Do not copy ntcodec.dll from another LightWave version into the repaired installation. A file from a different release or architecture may be incompatible.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling the file.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
ntcodec.dll, LightWave, or the LightWave installation folder. - Open a relevant detection to view its path and action.
- Confirm that the path belongs to your genuine LightWave installation.
Microsoft documents Protection History and quarantined-file restoration through its Windows Security guidance. If the file came from an official LightWave installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, you can use the available restore or allow option. Follow the prompts in Windows Security rather than copying an unrelated DLL.

If you cannot verify the installer, file path, or detection, do not restore the file. Reinstall LightWave from the official source and scan the installer first. Never disable antivirus protection simply to force an unknown DLL into the program folder.
After restoring a file, start LightWave and test the operation that previously failed. If the file is immediately quarantined again, stop and contact the antivirus vendor or LightWave support with the detection details.
4. Check the LightWave application folder and architecture
Time needed: 10 minutes
ntcodec.dll belongs with the LightWave installation that loads it. It should not normally be treated as a shared Windows component.
- Return to the LightWave shortcut.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Look in the program directory and any codec-related or
ntcodecfolder included with that release. - Compare the folder with the path shown in the error or with the location used by the original installer.
Exact folder names vary between LightWave releases. Deployment documentation for older installations indicates that LightWave may rely on a broader program directory structure, so restoring only one DLL may leave other required files missing.
Older LightWave executables may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit copy of its application DLL. Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires a 64-bit ntcodec.dll, and do not treat conflicting public file-index metadata as a universal version or architecture record.
To check an executable’s architecture, use the original LightWave documentation or a trusted executable-inspection utility. If you have both old and new LightWave releases installed, make sure the shortcut, DLL, plug-ins, and content folders all belong to the same release.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Every LightWave folder on the computer
- A random project or render folder
If LightWave runs from a copied, portable, network, or render-node directory, restore the complete program tree from the same installer. A single DLL may not be enough.
5. Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not run:
regsvr32 ntcodec.dll
unless NewTek documentation for that exact LightWave release specifically instructs you to register the file.
Microsoft describes regsvr32 as a utility for registering DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. An AVI helper or codec DLL may not be self-registering, so the command can produce an entry-point error without fixing LightWave.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA successful regsvr32 message would not prove that LightWave has the right file, the right architecture, or all required dependencies. Reinstalling the matching application is the correct first-line repair.

6. Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If ntcodec.dll is visibly present but Windows still reports “the specified module could not be found,” a dependency may be missing. Windows can use that message when the named DLL exists but cannot load one of the libraries it needs.
Check the following:
- Confirm that the file is in the correct LightWave application directory.
- Confirm that it is not zero bytes.
- Check whether its timestamp changed immediately before the problem began.
- Review Windows Security’s quarantine history.
- Note whether the error names another DLL.
- Reinstall the same LightWave release before installing unrelated runtimes.
- If the error remains, use a reputable dependency-analysis tool or contact official LightWave support.
Do not download a list of companion DLLs from random websites. That can hide the actual installation problem and introduce incompatible or unsafe files.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET solely because ntcodec.dll is missing. Install a runtime only when the complete LightWave error, the official installer, or the vendor’s instructions identify that runtime as required.
7. Run Windows component repair only if other Windows files are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
ntcodec.dll is associated with LightWave rather than Windows, so DISM and System File Checker are secondary steps. Use them when other Windows components are damaged, Windows Update is failing, or several unrelated applications report system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test LightWave again.
A successful DISM or SFC run repairs Windows components and protected system files. It does not recreate a missing third-party LightWave DLL. If LightWave still reports ntcodec.dll, return to the matching LightWave repair or reinstall step.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what it finds; its repair action requires the full version, and reinstalling LightWave remains the definitive fix for this application-specific file.
8. Consider drivers only when the error points to hardware or video software
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A display or codec-related problem can appear during AVI work, but a missing ntcodec.dll message is not normally repaired by updating a device driver. Use Device Manager only when LightWave also shows graphics problems, crashes during playback, or reports a device-related error.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test LightWave again.
You can also check Sound, video and game controllers if the complete error identifies an audio or video device. Do not uninstall a device or use a generic driver merely because ntcodec.dll is missing.
When checking many device manufacturers and driver versions manually becomes the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installing drivers remains optional and the full version is required for the repair, while reinstalling the matching LightWave release is still the definitive application fix.
9. Use System Restore only for a recent, identifiable change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore can help if ntcodec.dll disappeared immediately after a software installation, security change, or system modification and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected point. Use it only when the restore point is appropriate and normal LightWave reinstallation is unavailable or unsuccessful.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
A file named ntcodec.dll is not automatically genuine because its name looks correct. Random DLL download sites pages can provide malware, a different release, the wrong architecture, or a file with conflicting metadata. They also do not restore LightWave’s surrounding files, configuration, plug-ins, or dependencies.

There is no need to place this file in System32 or SysWOW64. Obtain LightWave through its official account or original installer, and keep the DLL in the application directory supplied by that installation.
If you no longer use LightWave, uninstalling the obsolete program is safer than manually replacing its files.
Frequently asked questions
What is ntcodec.dll?
It is a third-party LightWave component identified as NewTek, AVI Compressor. A LightWave addendum associates NTCodec.dll with the Windows AVI and LightWave path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is ntcodec.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with NewTek LightWave, not with a standard Windows installation.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL?
Historical public metadata describes one record as Win32, but that should not be treated as universal for every LightWave release. Match the DLL to the LightWave executable and installer rather than guessing from the operating system.
Where should it be located?
It should be inside the LightWave program structure used by the executable that reports the error. The exact directory varies by release. It should not be copied into Windows system folders.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or blocked. Reinstall the matching LightWave release first, then inspect the complete error if the problem continues.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not unless official instructions for that exact LightWave release require registration. regsvr32 is not a general missing-file repair tool and may fail when the DLL does not expose the required registration entry point.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not by default. Install a runtime only when the full LightWave error or official installer specifically identifies it as necessary.
What if the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
That is a generic Windows loader-style message, not proof that the file came from Windows. Recheck the LightWave release, architecture, file origin, and application directory, then reinstall from the trusted LightWave installer.
When should I contact LightWave support?
Contact official LightWave support when the correct installer is unavailable, activation prevents reinstallation, the file is repeatedly quarantined, or the same error remains after restoring the complete matching installation. Provide the LightWave version, executable path, full error text, antivirus detection details, and whether the problem affects startup or AVI operations.
