Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- The exact program or game showing the error
- The complete message, such as “ntlmshared.dll was not found” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- Whether the problem affects one application or several
- Whether it started after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, an application installation, or malware removal
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file path named by the error, if one is shown

ntlmshared.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. It is associated with NTLM Shared Functionality, part of Windows authentication, so it is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-specific runtime that should normally be downloaded separately.
What ntlmshared.dll does and where it belongs
Windows uses NTLM authentication for scenarios including local logon, workgroups, and some network access. Kerberos is preferred in Active Directory environments, but NTLM remains part of Windows.
The normal 64-bit Windows location is:
%WINDIR%System32NtlmShared.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit counterpart may also be available through:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64NtlmShared.dll
The presence of both paths depends on the Windows architecture and installation. Do not assume that a file from one directory can replace the other.

Microsoft servicing records include this component in Windows update payloads for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. Its version and size vary by Windows build and servicing package, so copying a file that matches a different computer is not a safe repair. Microsoft’s Windows servicing documentation and file inventory information show why build-specific matching matters.
An application can mention this DLL even when the application itself does not own the file. Windows loads system components on behalf of programs that use authentication, security, networking, or related APIs. A failure in the Windows component store, file system, update process, or security software can therefore appear as an application startup error.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or incomplete update can leave Windows components out of sync.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected program again.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely restored through Windows servicing. If it remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the primary repair for an absent, damaged, or mismatched Windows copy of ntlmshared.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at the same percentage for a while.
- When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the program again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error is gone after the restart, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending updates and run the commands again. If SFC says it found files it could not repair, review:

Do not copy ntlmshared.dll from another PC unless you are following a carefully matched Windows repair procedure. The Windows build, architecture, servicing state, and component ownership all matter.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first repair.
Fix 3: Determine whether one program or all programs fail
The scope of the failure points to the next step.
If several programs fail
Treat the problem as Windows-wide:
- Test another application that uses network or sign-in features.
- Check whether the error appears immediately after Windows starts.
- Verify that
NtlmShared.dllexists in%WINDIR%System32. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Run DISM and SFC as described above.
- Check Windows Security and recent updates.
An unexpected copy in a game folder, temporary folder, or download directory is not automatically the correct copy. The full path used by the loader is more important than a filename search alone.
If only one game or application fails
The application may be damaged, incomplete, or loading another dependency incorrectly.
For a Microsoft Store or packaged application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only after confirming that the application’s local data can be recreated.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command before deleting files. If the problem persists, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher.

Reinstalling the affected application is the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the executable to bypass the installer.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a system component after a detection, failed update, or altered file state.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries from the time the error began.
- Check the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoring a file when the path is a normal Windows directory, the Microsoft signature is valid, and you have ruled out malware or tampering. If the file was found in an application folder or an unfamiliar directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan instead.

Microsoft explains the available actions in its Protection History guidance. A restored file may be detected again if Windows Security still considers it unsafe.
For persistent or suspicious changes:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Save open work and start the scan.
Fix 5: Check the path, signature, and architecture
If the file exists but Windows still reports an error, the problem may involve the copy being loaded rather than simple absence.
Check these points:
- The expected system location is
%WINDIR%System32. - A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit system view and a corresponding
SysWOW64copy. - A 64-bit DLL should not be copied into a 32-bit application directory.
- A file with the right name in the wrong folder may be an unrelated or malicious replacement.
- A bad-image message means the loader rejected a file or dependency; it does not prove that the application owns
ntlmshared.dll.
Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures. An invalid signature, missing signature where one is expected, unexpected location, or repeated recreation after deletion warrants a malware scan and broader system repair.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs and then Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and full path.
Do not overwrite System32 manually. Windows Resource Protection and component servicing can reject or undo that change, and a mismatched replacement can create additional failures.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the wider problem points there
There is no established driver package that universally supplies ntlmshared.dll. Do not treat a graphics, chipset, or network driver reinstall as the default solution for this filename.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and inspect the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or uninstall and reinstall the driver from the hardware maker when appropriate.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not disable security features or install an unrelated driver merely because an error mentions a Windows DLL.

The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft’s built-in servicing tools, an official Windows repair source, and the affected program’s official installer.
regsvr32 is also not a generic DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Registering a Windows authentication component does not restore its servicing metadata or repair a corrupted dependency. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation describes registration errors; it does not establish that NtlmShared.dll should be registered.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery when repair fails
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use progressively stronger recovery options.
Reinstall the current Windows version
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft documents the process in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.

If the problem began after a driver, cleanup tool, update, or application installation:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers. Back up important data before using broader recovery options.

If corruption continues, use a matching Windows installation source with DISM, an in-place repair installation, or Windows recovery. A full reset or clean reinstall is a last resort and requires a verified backup.
What to collect before asking for support
Record the following instead of reporting only “DLL missing”:

FAQ
Is ntlmshared.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component when it is the correctly signed file in the normal Windows directory. A copy in an unexpected application or temporary folder needs verification rather than automatic trust.
Is it part of a game or Visual C++?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a game-specific, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file. Windows supplies it as part of its NTLM-related functionality.
Should I download ntlmshared.dll?
No. Restore Windows components through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery. Repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer when only one program fails.
Should I run regsvr32 ntlmshared.dll?
No. Registration is not the normal repair for this Windows component and can produce another error without fixing the damaged component.
Why does only one application report it?
That application may be the first program to invoke the affected Windows authentication path, or its installation may be damaged. Repair the application after checking Windows with DISM and SFC.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check the full path, digital signature, application architecture, Event Viewer, and other missing dependencies. The loader may be rejecting the file, or the application may be loading an unexpected copy.
