Nvidia announced DLSS 4.5 on January 6, 2026, and released its Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X modes through the NVIDIA App on March 31. The original “Nvidia to announce” framing is now historical: the technology is available, but its headline 6X feature requires a GeForce RTX 50-series GPU.

What DLSS 4.5 includes

DLSS 4.5 is a collection of neural-rendering features, not a single frame-generation switch. It includes an updated Super Resolution model, enhanced Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and, following a later 2026 update, Ray Reconstruction.

The second-generation transformer model is designed to improve temporal stability, anti-aliasing, motion clarity, lighting detail, fine edges and ghosting, including in Performance and Ultra Performance modes. Nvidia says the model uses a larger training dataset and substantially more compute than its predecessor; real-world results still vary by game and implementation.

Super Resolution became available first, through NVIDIA App overrides, on January 14. Nvidia subsequently released Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and the 6X mode on March 31.

Nvidia’s CES announcement covered the initial feature split, while its later Ray Reconstruction update expanded the DLSS 4.5 feature set.

What “6X frame generation” really means

DLSS 6X Multi Frame Generation generates five additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame. The “6X” label describes the output-frame cadence; it does not mean the GPU is natively rendering six times as much game information or that the game feels like a native six-times-faster experience.

For example, if a GPU renders 40 base frames per second, Multi Frame Generation can insert generated frames between them and produce a much higher displayed frame cadence. The game’s simulation, input sampling and CPU workload do not run at that generated rate. Responsiveness depends heavily on the base-rendered frame rate, frame pacing, Reflex behavior, display and game settings.

Nvidia claims that moving from 4X to 6X can increase 4K frame rates in path-traced titles by up to 35%. That is Nvidia’s claim for its stated test context, not a universal result across games, resolutions or graphics settings.

Dynamic versus fixed Multi Frame Generation

With a fixed multiplier, the user selects the desired frame-generation mode. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation instead changes the multiplier during gameplay to target either the display’s maximum refresh rate or a user-defined frame-rate target.

  • Dynamic: adjusts the multiplier as the workload changes.
  • Max refresh rate: targets the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
  • Custom: targets a frame rate entered by the user.
  • Fixed: keeps the selected multiplier active.

Dynamic mode can use fewer generated frames when the game is already near its target and increase the multiplier when performance falls. That can be more practical than forcing 6X everywhere, since aggressive generation may make artifacts, latency concerns or unstable frame pacing more noticeable.

Nvidia currently documents Dynamic mode as incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. Users who depend on those controls for latency, power consumption or VRR behavior should test carefully. Selecting “Max refresh rate” is not guaranteed to produce the best latency or smoothness on every display.

Which RTX cards support each feature?

Feature RTX 20 RTX 30 RTX 40 RTX 50
DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution override Yes* Yes* Yes Yes
DLSS Frame Generation No No Yes Yes
Multi Frame Generation No No No Yes
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation No No No Yes
6X Multi Frame Generation No No No Yes

*Nvidia says the updated Super Resolution model works across RTX generations, but RTX 20- and 30-series cards lack native FP8 support. Some newer model presets can therefore have a heavier performance cost on those GPUs; Nvidia identifies Model K as a possible quality-performance compromise.

This distinction matters: “DLSS 4.5 supports all RTX GPUs” primarily refers to Super Resolution. Software cannot turn an RTX 20, 30 or 40-series card into an RTX 50 card with access to Dynamic Multi Frame Generation or 6X.

Requirements and how to enable it

For the public Dynamic and 6X release, Nvidia requires:

  • A GeForce RTX 50-series GPU.
  • The updated NVIDIA App.
  • GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer.
  • A compatible game or application.
  • An applicable in-game DLSS Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation path, where required.

Nvidia’s earlier beta guidance referenced driver 595.79 WHQL or newer, but 595.97 is the requirement specified for the public release.

Enable Dynamic mode

  1. Open the NVIDIA App.
  2. Open the Graphics tab.
  3. Select global settings or an individual game.
  4. Open DLSS Override – Frame Generation Mode.
  5. Choose Dynamic.
  6. Select Max refresh rate, or choose Custom and enter a target frame rate.

For a fixed mode, choose Fixed in the same menu and select the desired multiplier. To use a basic 2X multiplier, Nvidia says to select Use 3D app setting and enable DLSS Frame Generation inside the game.

Game support is not universal

DLSS support alone does not guarantee access to every DLSS 4.5 feature. Support can depend on the game, its DLSS version or DLL, and whether the feature is integrated natively or supplied through an NVIDIA App override.

Nvidia’s game and application list, updated July 28, 2026, distinguishes labels such as NV, 6X for Dynamic Multi Frame Generation at up to 6X and NV, 4X for Multi Frame Generation at up to 4X. Check the current compatibility list for a specific title instead of assuming that every DLSS game supports 6X.

Examples Nvidia identified in March as supporting enhanced Frame Generation features included Borderlands 4, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, F1 25, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Star Wars Outlaws, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and The Outer Worlds 2. Game support can change as updates and overrides are released.

When DLSS 4.5 helps—and when it does not

DLSS 4.5 is most compelling for RTX 50 owners using high-refresh-rate monitors, especially in demanding 4K path-traced games. It is also useful for older RTX owners who want to try the updated Super Resolution model without buying a new GPU.

It is a weaker fit when the base frame rate is very low, the game is CPU-limited, frame pacing is unstable, or the display cannot show the generated output. Competitive players may prefer lower or no frame generation if minimum latency matters more than perceived smoothness. Fast motion, HUD elements, text, foliage and particles can also reveal generation artifacts.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

A high FPS counter can therefore coexist with lower base-rendered FPS, unchanged or increased input latency, visual artifacts or uneven pacing. Frame generation improves displayed smoothness; it does not remove the underlying rendering or simulation bottleneck.

Troubleshooting

Dynamic mode does not appear

  • Confirm that the GPU is an RTX 50-series model.
  • Update the NVIDIA App and install Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer.
  • Enable the game’s relevant DLSS Frame Generation option.
  • Check whether the title and its current DLL are supported.
  • Try the game-specific NVIDIA App profile rather than global settings.

The 6X option is unavailable

6X is not present in every DLSS-supported game. Nvidia separates titles supporting up to 4X from those supporting 6X through current integrations or overrides. Consult the compatibility list before treating a missing option as a driver problem.

Performance gets worse

Possible causes include the heavier Super Resolution model cost on RTX 20/30 cards, a CPU bottleneck, excessive base-rendering load, Dynamic mode changing multipliers, or a game integration that is not well optimized. Compare the base-rendered rate, GPU utilization and frame pacing rather than relying only on the displayed FPS number.

Image quality gets worse

Try a lower multiplier, Fixed instead of Dynamic mode, another DLSS model preset, less sharpening, or the game’s native DLSS implementation. Overrides do not necessarily behave identically to native integration.

Bottom line for RTX owners

DLSS 4.5 is a meaningful software update, but its benefits are divided by GPU generation. RTX 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-series cards can access the updated Super Resolution model, with performance caveats on older hardware. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X Multi Frame Generation are RTX 50-exclusive features.

The sixfold headline should be read as a generated-output multiplier, not six times native rendering performance. For an RTX 50 owner with a high-refresh display and a supported, demanding game, Dynamic mode may be a useful way to balance smoothness and workload. For everyone else, DLSS 4.5’s Super Resolution improvements—not 6X—are the relevant upgrade.
