The GeForce GTX 980 Ti came close to Nvidia’s flagship GTX Titan X in many games tested in 2015, but it was not identical in every title. Its $649.99 starting price was substantially below the Titan X’s $999 launch price, making the 980 Ti the stronger release-era value for many high-end gaming builds. That is a historical comparison, not a current used-card recommendation.
How close was the GTX 980 Ti to the Titan X?
GamersNexus’s May 31, 2015 review found the two GM200-based cards effectively tied in Shadow of Mordor, while GRID: Autosport showed a visible gap. The review tested multiple games, including The Witcher 3, Grand Theft Auto V, and Metro: Last Light, against cards such as the GTX 980 and GTX 780 Ti. Results varied with the game and test conditions, so “Titan X performance” is best understood as a broad description of the 980 Ti’s high-end position—not a promise of matching frame rates in every game or at every resolution.
The review’s verdict captured the value argument in period context: reviewer Steve Burke called the GTX 980 Ti “a substantially better purchase” for nearly all reasonable gaming use cases, specifically in light of its high-resolution performance and pricing at the time. GTX 980 Ti vs. GTX Titan X: launch-era specifications
| Specification | GeForce GTX 980 Ti | GeForce GTX Titan X |
|---|---|---|
| Launch position | High-end card below Titan X and above GTX 980 | Nvidia’s flagship card in the cited 2015 comparison |
| GPU | GM200 | GM200 family |
| CUDA cores | 2,816 | 3,072 |
| Memory | 6 GB GDDR5 | 12 GB VRAM |
| Memory interface | 384-bit | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| TDP | 250 W | 250 W |
| Launch price | $649.99 starting price | $999 launch price |
| Reference PCIe power connectors | One 6-pin and one 8-pin | Not stated in the cited comparison |
The GTX 980 Ti’s lower core count and half the Titan X’s memory capacity did not prevent it from coming close in many of the reviewed games. But 6 GB versus 12 GB is a real hardware distinction, and the benchmark findings do not establish how either card performs in modern games. The figures above are launch-era specifications and prices, not present-day offers. Why the GTX 980 Ti was the better value in 2015
At launch, the GTX 980 Ti cost $349.01 less than the Titan X, while delivering performance close to Nvidia’s more expensive flagship in many tested games. The Titan X offered twice the VRAM and slightly more CUDA cores, but those advantages did not translate into a consistent across-the-board gaming lead in the period testing. For buyers choosing between the two at their original prices, the 980 Ti offered much of the Titan X experience for considerably less.
This is a release-era value verdict only. The cited reviews do not establish today’s second-hand prices, availability, condition, driver support, or performance in current games, so they cannot show whether a used GTX 980 Ti is a good purchase now.

Power and fit: check the exact board model
The reference GTX 980 Ti was rated at 250 W and specified with one 6-pin plus one 8-pin PCIe power connector. Those details are useful for identifying the card’s baseline requirements, but partner cards can use different coolers, dimensions, and power arrangements. Before considering a particular card, confirm its exact model and check the manufacturer’s specifications for connector needs, physical clearance, and the power supply requirements. Do not assume every GTX 980 Ti board matches the reference design.

What this review can—and cannot—tell you today
- It can establish: the GTX 980 Ti’s 2015 specifications, its original price position beneath Titan X, and its near-flagship performance in the games and conditions tested at the time.
- It cannot establish: a current used-market value, present-day stock, longevity, current driver support, or frame rates in contemporary games.
- For a present-day purchase decision: evaluate the specific used card’s condition, seller and return terms, exact board-partner model, and compatibility with your system; the period comparison alone is not enough.
