The RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is faster, but the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is often the better value. Choose the RTX 4070 when the price premium is modest, the laptop uses a comparable or higher GPU power limit, and you plan to play at 1440p or 1600p, use ray tracing, or run GPU-heavy creative workloads. Choose the RTX 4060 when price, 1080p performance, battery life, or the rest of the laptop matters more.
The most important warning is that laptop GPU names do not tell the whole story. A high-power RTX 4060 can approach or outperform a low-power RTX 4070, while a better screen, CPU, cooling system, or upgradeable memory can make the 4060 laptop the superior overall purchase.

According to NVIDIA’s RTX 40 Series laptop specifications, the RTX 4070 has 4,608 CUDA cores compared with 3,072 on the RTX 4060. That is a 50% nominal increase in shader resources, but it does not mean 50% higher gaming performance. Real results depend on power, cooling, clock speeds, the CPU, the game, and the laptop’s display resolution.
Both GPUs have 8GB of GDDR6 memory and a 128-bit memory interface. That shared memory configuration is central to this comparison: the RTX 4070 is faster, but it does not provide a VRAM-capacity upgrade.

Which is faster?
In comparable, high-power laptops, the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is usually faster by a noticeable but moderate margin. Broadly, the advantage is often in the low-teens to roughly 20%, though the exact gap varies by game and laptop. Treat that as an approximate range rather than a guaranteed result.
The RTX 4070’s advantage is largest when the workload is genuinely GPU-limited. It becomes more useful at higher resolutions, with demanding graphics presets, ray tracing, and GPU-accelerated rendering. The gap can shrink at 1080p when the CPU limits frame rates, when both systems use aggressive DLSS settings, or when the RTX 4070 is configured with a lower power limit.

GPU wattage can matter more than the model number
Laptop manufacturers can configure these GPUs across a wide power range. A thin laptop may restrict the GPU to reduce heat, noise, and weight, while a larger gaming laptop may sustain considerably more power. Cooling capacity, BIOS tuning, Dynamic Boost, and how the system divides power between the CPU and GPU also affect performance.
That means this is a more useful comparison:
- RTX 4060 at 115W or a similar high-power configuration
- versus RTX 4070 at 80W or 105W
It is not safe to assume that every RTX 4070 laptop beats every RTX 4060 laptop. Before buying, check the exact GPU TGP and whether the advertised figure includes Dynamic Boost. A manufacturer may list an “up to” configuration that does not match every SKU. ASUS specifically cautions that its listed maximum specifications may not apply to every available configuration.
Also look for sustained review measurements rather than only a product-page maximum. A laptop that briefly reaches a high wattage but throttles during long gaming sessions may perform worse than a cooler, consistently tuned alternative.
1080p gaming: the RTX 4060 is usually enough
The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is a strong fit for high-refresh-rate 1080p or 1920×1200 gaming. It is particularly sensible for esports games, older AAA titles, and games where DLSS is available. In these scenarios, the RTX 4070 can deliver higher frame rates, but the improvement may not justify a large price premium.
At 1080p, CPU performance and memory configuration can become important. An RTX 4060 laptop with a stronger processor, dual-channel memory, better cooling, or a higher-refresh display may provide a better gaming experience than an RTX 4070 laptop paired with a weaker CPU or poorly tuned chassis.
The 4060 is also the better value choice when its lower price lets you upgrade to 32GB of RAM, a larger SSD, or a substantially better display.
1440p and 1600p gaming: the RTX 4070 makes more sense
The RTX 4070 becomes more compelling with a 2560×1440 or 2560×1600 display, or when the laptop will drive a high-resolution external monitor. The additional GPU resources can help maintain higher frame rates and better minimums at demanding settings.
Ray tracing also increases the value of the faster GPU. If you regularly enable demanding ray-traced effects, the RTX 4070 gives you more performance headroom before you need to lower settings or rely more heavily on upscaling.
However, neither GPU should be treated as a guaranteed 4K solution simply because one carries the RTX 4070 name. Both remain limited by 8GB of VRAM and a 128-bit memory interface. At high resolutions, ultra textures, heavy mods, or demanding ray-tracing settings, memory capacity can become a constraint before the RTX 4070’s extra shader performance solves the problem.

Frame Generation requires careful interpretation. It can increase the displayed frame rate in supported games, but it does not eliminate the underlying rendering workload. It also does not make the input responsiveness identical to native-rendered frames at the same displayed FPS. Compare base rendering performance, image quality, and latency—not just the largest number shown by an FPS counter.
Both GPUs have 8GB of VRAM
This is the clearest reason the RTX 4070 is not a complete class upgrade over the RTX 4060:
- The RTX 4070 Laptop GPU does not normally have more VRAM.
- Both GPUs are generally configured with 8GB of GDDR6.
- Both use a 128-bit memory interface.
The RTX 4070’s extra cores can improve shader and compute performance, but they do not increase the amount of game data, textures, or scene information that can fit in VRAM. This matters for ultra texture settings, heavy modifications, 1600p or higher resolutions, large Blender scenes, and AI workloads that exceed 8GB of usable memory.
If VRAM is the problem in a game, lowering texture quality is often more effective than reducing every graphics setting. If you specifically need more than 8GB, neither of these laptop GPUs is the right upgrade; look at a different GPU class.

The RTX 4070 is generally preferable for applications that scale well with CUDA cores, RT cores, or Tensor cores. Potentially relevant workloads include:
- GPU rendering in Blender and similar applications
- 3D viewport work
- GPU-accelerated video effects
- AI-assisted creator software
- CUDA compute workloads
The benefit depends on whether the application is compute-bound, memory-bound, CPU-bound, or limited by the laptop’s cooling system. The RTX 4070’s additional cores can reduce render times, but its equal 8GB VRAM capacity still limits larger scenes and datasets.
For streaming and video production, both GPUs support AV1 encoding. The RTX 4070 should not be selected solely because of AV1, DLSS, ray tracing, or Studio support; those capabilities are available on the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU as part of the same RTX 40-series platform.

How to compare two actual laptops
Compare the complete machines, not only the GPU labels. Record these details for each candidate:
- Exact GPU TGP: Check the sustained power limit and whether Dynamic Boost is included.
- CPU: A stronger processor can matter substantially at 1080p and in creator applications.
- RAM: Prefer 32GB for demanding modern games and creative work, or confirm that the memory can be upgraded.
- SSD: Check capacity and whether a second drive can be installed.
- Display: Compare resolution, refresh rate, brightness, response time, and color coverage.
- Cooling: Look for independent testing of sustained performance, fan noise, and throttling.
- Display output path: A MUX switch or Advanced Optimus can affect performance by changing how frames reach the internal screen.
- Battery and weight: Higher performance often means a larger charger, more heat, and shorter battery life.
- Warranty and returns: These matter especially for refurbished or outlet stock.
- Current alternatives: If an older RTX 4070 laptop is priced close to a newer-generation model, compare the platforms rather than assuming the 4070 is automatically the better deal.
When to buy the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
- The price difference is substantial.
- The laptop has a 1080p or 1920×1200 display.
- The RTX 4060 model has a higher TGP than the RTX 4070 alternative.
- The 4060 laptop has the stronger CPU, display, cooling, RAM, or SSD.
- You mainly play esports games, older AAA games, or titles that already run well.
- You prioritize battery life, lower weight, or less fan noise.
- The savings can fund 32GB of RAM or a better screen.
When to buy the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU
- The price premium is relatively small.
- The two laptops have similar CPUs, memory, storage, screens, and cooling.
- The RTX 4070 has a clearly higher or more sustained power configuration.
- You want to play at 1440p or 1600p.
- Ray tracing and higher minimum frame rates matter to you.
- You use GPU rendering, 3D applications, or other compute-heavy software.
- You plan to connect the laptop to a high-resolution external monitor.
When the RTX 4070 premium is a bad deal
A higher model number does not justify paying extra when the RTX 4070 laptop has a lower TGP, less RAM, a weaker CPU, a poor display, limited cooling, or a price close to a newer GPU generation. Do not pay more expecting extra VRAM: both models generally provide 8GB.
Likewise, avoid a 4060 laptop with a high-resolution display if you expect maximum ray-traced performance at 1600p. The right choice depends on the balance between the GPU and the machine around it.
Buying refurbished or clearance stock
Older RTX 4070 laptops can be attractive on outlet or refurbished markets, but verify the exact GPU configuration rather than relying on the product family name. Check battery health, charger inclusion, screen condition, warranty duration, return policy, RAM upgradeability, and the sustained GPU power limit.

Quick Recap
Bottom-line buying checklist
Before choosing, ask:
- What is the exact TGP of each GPU?
- Does the 4070 laptop actually have comparable cooling?
- Will the laptop’s display benefit from the extra GPU performance?
- Does either model have 32GB of RAM or upgradeable memory?
- Is the price premium small enough to justify a moderate performance increase?
- Do you need more than 8GB of VRAM? If so, neither option solves that requirement.
- Would the same money buy a newer-generation laptop?
