You may see “The program can’t start because racreg32.dll is missing from your computer” or “The code execution cannot proceed because racreg32.dll was not found.” Other messages include “Error loading racreg32.dll,” “Failed to load racreg32.dll,” and “racreg32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
racreg32.dll is a historical 32-bit Microsoft component named Remote Automation Connection Manager Server. It belongs to the old Remote Automation tooling used by products such as Visual FoxPro and Visual C++ Enterprise-era development environments.

The safest fix is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original or official installer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
Current Visual C++ Redistributables are not a substitute for this component. Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not normally provide it as a standard modern runtime file.

What is racreg32.dll?
racreg32.dll was part of Remote Automation Connection Manager Server 5.0, a Microsoft component associated with legacy OLE/COM Remote Automation.
Historical Remote Automation installations used several related files, including:
RACMGR32.EXE, the Remote Automation Connection ManagerRACREG32.DLL, the Remote Automation registration componentAUTMGR32.EXEAUTPRX32.DLL- Legacy Visual Basic and OLE support files
The component helped configure or register older Remote Automation servers. It is not a normal modern Windows runtime DLL.
It is also unrelated to:
rasapi32.dll, the Remote Access Service API- Windows Remote Registry
- Remote Desktop
msvcp140.dllvcruntime140.dll- Current Visual C++ Redistributable packages
The file is historically 32-bit. That remains important even when the affected computer runs 64-bit Windows.
Which programs may need it?
A missing racreg32.dll error usually points to an old application or development environment rather than Windows itself. Known historical associations include:
- Microsoft Visual FoxPro development environments
- Visual C++ Enterprise Edition-era tools
- Remote Automation Connection Manager
- Applications built around legacy OLE Remote Automation
An old program may request the file after an incomplete installation, damaged application folder, failed uninstall, or antivirus quarantine.
The message does not prove that Windows, a modern game, or a current Microsoft application originally installed the file. If a modern program suddenly asks for it, first identify the executable making the request.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged legacy program | The parent application lost one or more files | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Incomplete installation | The installer omitted Remote Automation or its dependencies | Run the complete original installer |
| Quarantine or removal | Security software removed the file | Verify the source before restoring it |
| Missing dependency | Another old runtime file is absent | Reinstall the complete package, not one DLL |
| Wrong architecture | A 32-bit application is using an incorrect file | Restore the 32-bit files from the same product |
| Orphaned startup entry | An old program was removed but Windows still tries to launch it | Remove the obsolete entry after confirming it is not needed |
| System corruption | Broader Windows components are damaged | Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks |
A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency of racreg32.dll is missing. The named file may exist while another required legacy runtime file does not.
Fix 1: Identify the parent program first
Do this before downloading or copying anything.
Check the window, shortcut, or executable
- Read the title bar of the error window.
- Note which application was launching when the message appeared.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Record the executable name and folder.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for the application, Visual FoxPro, Visual Studio-era software, or Remote Automation-related tools.
If the error appears during startup, inspect startup entries:
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old application or unknown entry.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Do not disable or remove an entry until you know which program owns it.
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error created at the time of the failure.
- Check the application name and faulting executable.
The goal is to identify the program that installed or still expects racreg32.dll. Without that information, replacing the file is guesswork.
Fix 2: Repair the application that needs the file
If the affected program appears in Windows settings, try its repair option.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again.
Not every traditional desktop program provides Repair, Reset, or Advanced options. If there is no repair option, use the application’s own maintenance installer or setup program.
A successful repair should remove the missing-file message and allow the original program to start. If the same error remains, proceed to a complete reinstall.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete legacy program
This is the most reliable fix when racreg32.dll belonged to an old Visual FoxPro, Visual C++, or Remote Automation installation.
- Back up the application’s documents and configuration files.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reinstall the application from its original media or the vendor’s complete installer.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program from its normal shortcut.
If the software came from an organization, contact its administrator or application vendor for the original installer. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded separately.
A complete installation may also restore dependencies such as the old Visual Basic runtime files used by Remote Automation. Historical Remote Automation documentation specifically identifies additional files, including VB40032.DLL. That means copying only racreg32.dll can leave the program broken.

- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the software’s documentation requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer as administrator.
Compatibility mode does not make an incompatible application modern, but it can help an old installer complete.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove an old DLL because legacy components are uncommon or because the file was modified. Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection related to the affected application.
- Confirm the original file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only when it came from a known, legitimate installer and its authenticity is established.
- Reinstall the application instead when possible.
Microsoft describes Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.
If the file appeared in an unexpected folder, was associated with an unknown executable, or was flagged after a malware incident, do not restore it. Run a full scan and investigate the parent program first.
Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they are not guaranteed to restore an application-owned racreg32.dll.
Run DISM first:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Then run SFC:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Microsoft’s recommended procedure is documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Success means Windows reports that corruption was repaired, or the application starts after the restart. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations but the same program still fails, reinstall the application instead. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not every DLL installed by third-party or legacy software.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not recreate a missing application package.

Manual component repair can involve hunting through old installers and determining which files belong together. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while the repair portion requires the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the originating legacy program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if the failure is recent
System Restore can help if the error started after a software installation, update, driver change, or configuration change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s recovery guidance covers this process in Recovery options in Windows.
Fix 7: Use regsvr32 only when the original installer requires it
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Historically, RACREG32.DLL could be registered when Remote Automation components were deployed to a computer without the full development environment. That does not mean every copy should be registered manually.
Use registration only when:
- The original application documentation explicitly requires it.
- The file came from the application’s legitimate installer.
- The file is complete and compatible with the application.
- You know the correct installation folder.
Because racreg32.dll is historically 32-bit, a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows would generally use:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:PathToracreg32.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location of the trusted file.
To run it:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter the command with the correct path.
- Press Enter.
- Read the result.
A successful registration message confirms only that the registration operation completed. It does not prove that every dependency is present or that the application is compatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Common failures mean different things:
- The module could not be found: the path is wrong or a dependency is missing.
- The entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found: the DLL may not support self-registration.
- The file is not compatible: the wrong architecture or vintage may have been used.
- Access denied: the command prompt was not elevated or the folder is restricted.
Do not use the 64-bit C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe simply because the computer runs 64-bit Windows. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system tools.
Fix 8: Check architecture and file placement
A 64-bit replacement is not appropriate merely because Windows is 64-bit. The historical component is 32-bit and should come from the same application package as the calling program.
Avoid assuming that the correct location is:
C:WindowsSystem32
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit system directory. A 32-bit application may instead load application-local files or components through the 32-bit Windows environment.
The correct location depends on the original installer. It may be beside the calling executable or in a product-specific folder. Do not copy the file into multiple directories to make the error disappear.

If the application is still installed, inspect its folder and compare the files with the original installer. If no legitimate parent program can be identified, do not add a replacement DLL.
Fix 9: Update Windows, but do not install every Visual C++ package
Install available Windows updates when the computer has broader compatibility or component problems:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the application again.
Do not expect Windows Update to supply racreg32.dll.
Current Visual C++ Redistributables cover supported Visual Studio generations and are not a replacement for the old Remote Automation files. Microsoft’s current package information is available on the Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

Driver checks are usually not relevant
racreg32.dll is an application component, not a hardware driver. Updating graphics, chipset, printer, or storage drivers will not normally restore it.
Check drivers only when the same failure began after a hardware or system-driver change:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Avoid removing a working device or installing unrelated drivers in response to this DLL message. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while installation through the full version is optional; driver work is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns racreg32.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download racreg32.dll from a DLL collection site and place it in System32.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may belong to a different product.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may be damaged or modified.
- Required dependencies may still be missing.
- Registration may still be required.
- The application may be requesting the file from a different location.
Even a file with the correct name is not automatically authentic. Safe sources are the original application media, the software vendor’s complete installer, or a trusted organizational deployment package.
If no parent program can be found
If no installed application legitimately needs the file:
- Confirm the executable path shown by the error or Event Viewer.
- Check Installed apps for the obsolete program.
- Inspect Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Check Task Scheduler for an old task.
- Remove the obsolete application through its own uninstaller.
- Disable an orphaned startup entry only after confirming its purpose.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
If the request began after malware or an unexplained software installation, prioritize the security investigation. Do not restore a suspicious Microsoft-branded file solely because its name looks familiar.
Frequently asked questions
Is racreg32.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft-authored legacy component, but available evidence ties it to Remote Automation and old development products rather than proving that it is an inbox protected file in current Windows. Do not assume that SFC will restore it.
Is racreg32.dll part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No current Visual C++ Redistributable should be treated as a replacement for this old Remote Automation component. Restore the complete legacy application or development environment that originally installed it.
Should I copy racreg32.dll to System32?
No. The correct location depends on the original application and its architecture. Copying a 32-bit DLL into the 64-bit system directory can create more confusion and may not fix the dependency.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Only when the original Remote Automation deployment requires registration and the file is authentic, compatible, and complete. It cannot recreate missing dependencies or repair a damaged application installation.
Can SFC fix racreg32.dll?
Usually not if the file belongs to an old application. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Run DISM followed by SFC when broader Windows corruption is possible, then reinstall the originating application if the error remains.
Is this file used by modern games?
There is no basis for treating racreg32.dll as a standard dependency of modern games. If a game requests it, verify the game installation and identify the executable before restoring anything.
What if reinstalling the program does not help?
Inspect the application’s dependency chain, Event Viewer, security quarantine, and installation logs. “The specified module could not be found” may identify a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. If no legitimate parent application remains, remove the orphaned startup or shortcut entry instead of downloading the file.
