Yes—but only the first desktop models. NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 50 Series at CES on January 6, 2025. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 went on sale January 30, while the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 were announced for availability beginning in February. That put NVIDIA’s initial desktop RTX 50 Series launch squarely in Q1 2025.

This is now a historical launch timeline rather than a future prediction: the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launched on January 30, 2025. The official name is GeForce RTX 50 Series, although “NVIDIA 5000 Series” remains common shorthand.

RTX 50 Series release timeline

Product Announced availability U.S. launch MSRP
GeForce RTX 5090 January 30, 2025 $1,999
GeForce RTX 5080 January 30, 2025 $999
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti February 2025 $749
GeForce RTX 5070 February 2025 $549

NVIDIA’s original announcement gave “starting in February” for the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 rather than exact dates. These figures are U.S. launch MSRPs, not guaranteed retail prices or current 2026 pricing. Partner cards with larger coolers or factory overclocks can cost more.

Desktop and laptop launches were different

The Q1 2025 desktop schedule did not apply to every RTX 50 Series product. NVIDIA scheduled laptops using the RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti to begin shipping in March 2025. RTX 5070 laptops were scheduled for April, outside Q1.

A laptop labeled RTX 5090 is not equivalent to a desktop RTX 5090. Laptop manufacturers can configure different power limits, cooling systems and memory specifications, so performance varies considerably between models. NVIDIA also promoted laptop technologies such as Max-Q power management, Advanced Power Gating, Low Latency Sleep and Accelerated Frequency Switching. Its claim of up to 40% better battery life compared with the previous generation was a manufacturer claim, not a universal result for every laptop.

For the announcement’s complete schedule, see NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series launch coverage.

What NVIDIA announced

The RTX 50 Series brought NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture to consumer graphics cards. The headline technologies included GDDR7 memory, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, RTX Neural Shaders and updated video encoding and decoding. NVIDIA cited memory speeds of up to 30Gbps and memory bandwidth of up to 1.8TB/s across the Blackwell lineup.

Launch specifications

  • RTX 5090: 32GB GDDR7, 1,792GB/s memory bandwidth, 21,760 CUDA cores, 680 fifth-generation Tensor Cores and 170 fourth-generation ray-tracing cores.
  • RTX 5080: 16GB GDDR7 and up to 960GB/s of memory bandwidth.
  • RTX 5070 Ti: 16GB GDDR7 and 896GB/s of memory bandwidth.
  • RTX 5070: 12GB GDDR7 and 672GB/s of memory bandwidth.

The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 also introduced support for 4:2:2 video workflows in NVIDIA’s launch materials, making them particularly relevant to some video creators and streamers.

DLSS 4 and the meaning of “twice as fast”

DLSS 4 was central to NVIDIA’s performance messaging. Its Multi Frame Generation feature can generate up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame, according to NVIDIA. The company claimed frame rates up to eight times higher than conventional rendering in selected demonstrations.

Those generated frames can make motion appear smoother, but they are not equivalent to rendering three additional frames through conventional rasterization or ray tracing. The game still has to simulate the underlying world, and the experience depends on the baseline frame rate, latency, image quality, CPU performance, display and game support.

NVIDIA also said DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA were moving to transformer-based models. The benefit depends on implementation and support; DLSS 4 does not produce the same result in every game.

For the same reason, NVIDIA’s claims of up to twice the performance of an RTX 4090, RTX 4080 or RTX 4070 Ti should not be read as universal native-rendering benchmarks. NVIDIA made those comparisons using selected games and settings with Blackwell features and DLSS 4 enabled. The RTX 5070’s promotional comparison with the RTX 4090 likewise does not mean it matches that card in every game or in native rendering.

What each desktop card was for

GeForce RTX 5090

At $1,999, the RTX 5090 was the flagship option for high-refresh 4K gaming, demanding ray tracing, professional creative workloads and local AI tasks that benefit from 32GB of VRAM. Its memory capacity is also a major distinction for large scenes, high-resolution assets and generative-AI workloads.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5080
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0

GeForce RTX 5080

The $999 RTX 5080 targeted high-end gaming with 16GB of GDDR7. NVIDIA claimed up to twice the RTX 4080’s performance in selected DLSS 4 scenarios. Buyers should still compare its native rasterization and ray-tracing results, real retail price and power requirements against discounted RTX 40 Series cards.

GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

The RTX 5070 Ti launched at $749 with 16GB of GDDR7 and 896GB/s of bandwidth. Its memory capacity made it a more flexible choice than a lower-capacity card for 1440p, 4K textures and some creator workloads, although application performance depends on the software.

GeForce RTX 5070

The RTX 5070 launched at $549 with 12GB of GDDR7. That capacity can be sufficient for many 1440p gaming systems, but it may be a limitation for long-term 4K gaming, demanding texture packs, local AI and some professional workloads. NVIDIA’s claimed RTX 4090-level performance applied to selected DLSS-enabled scenarios, not to general native performance.

What “available” really meant

A launch date can describe several different things: NVIDIA’s promised date, Founders Edition stock, partner-card availability, prebuilt-system availability or actual inventory at MSRP. These are not interchangeable.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5090
  • Integrated with 32GB GDDR7 512bit memory interface
  • WINDFORCE HYPERBURST cooling system
  • RGB Halo
  • Die-casting Metal Backplate
  • MSRP is a baseline: it does not guarantee that a card will be in stock at that price.
  • Founders Edition stock was limited: regional availability and retailer inventory varied.
  • Partner models differ: coolers, dimensions, noise, factory clocks, warranties and prices can all change.
  • Local prices vary: taxes, currency conversion, retailer margins, bundles and scarcity affect the final cost.

Readers looking for product listings can use NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series page and its graphics-card directory. Those pages should not be treated as evidence of current stock or current pricing without checking the relevant retailer.

Should you have waited for RTX 50 Series?

  • High-end buyer: Waiting made sense if you planned to spend around RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 money and could tolerate launch scarcity.
  • RTX 20 or RTX 30 owner: The newer generation offered a stronger case if you wanted better ray tracing, newer AI features, GDDR7, improved encoding or DLSS 4 support.
  • RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 owner: The upgrade value was less automatic. It depended on resolution, game support, actual pricing and how much Multi Frame Generation mattered to you.
  • Budget buyer: A discounted RTX 40 Series card could be the better purchase if you needed a GPU immediately and did not need DLSS 4.
  • Creator or AI user: Prioritize VRAM, encoder support, application compatibility, framework support, quantization support and memory bandwidth over gaming-only claims.

Check the rest of the PC before upgrading

Before buying any RTX 50 Series card, verify the specific model rather than relying only on the GPU name:

  • Power-supply capacity and the required power connector or adapter.
  • Case length, card thickness and occupied expansion slots.
  • Case airflow and cooling.
  • CPU performance at the target resolution and refresh rate.
  • Monitor resolution and refresh rate.
  • Whether the games or creative applications support the features you plan to use.

Exact power-supply requirements can differ between NVIDIA Founders Edition and partner boards, so they should be checked against the chosen card’s specifications.

Bottom line on the Q1 2025 prediction

The prediction was correct for NVIDIA’s initial desktop lineup, but “all RTX 50 Series cards in Q1” would have been misleading. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 arrived January 30, 2025; the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 followed in February; RTX 50 Series laptops began with some models in March, while RTX 5070 laptops were scheduled for April. As of August 2026, those dates are established launch history rather than upcoming release expectations.
