The RTX 5070 is faster and more feature-rich, but it is not a transformative upgrade from an RTX 4070. Buy the RTX 5070 for a new PC, near-$549 pricing, stronger ray tracing, or DLSS Multi Frame Generation. Keep or buy an RTX 4070 when it is substantially cheaper, you mainly play rasterized games at 1440p, or you value lower power consumption.

Is the RTX 5070 faster than the RTX 4070?

Yes. The RTX 5070 is generally about 15% to 25% faster in conventional rasterized gaming, depending on the game, resolution, settings, drivers, and test suite. NVIDIA describes the improvement as roughly 20%, while independent reviews characterize it as a modest and variable generational gain. See the Tom’s Hardware review and PCWorld’s testing for independent analysis.

That lead is not large enough to make an RTX 4070 owner feel as though they have moved to a completely different performance class. CPU limitations, game engines, factory overclocks, and whether ray tracing or upscaling is enabled can all change the gap.

Raster gaming: a modest win for the RTX 5070

With ray tracing and frame generation disabled, the RTX 5070’s advantages come from its newer architecture, slightly higher shader count, and substantially faster memory subsystem. It is the faster card, but the 4.3% increase in CUDA cores alone does not explain a 20% class gaming lead. Architectural improvements and bandwidth do more of the work.

For ordinary 1440p gaming, both cards remain capable. The RTX 5070 is preferable for high-refresh displays and maximum settings, but an RTX 4070 already delivers strong results in many games. If the 5070 costs $200 or more than a comparable 4070, its raster advantage alone is usually not enough to justify the premium.

Ray tracing and DLSS: where the RTX 5070 separates itself

The RTX 5070 uses newer fourth-generation ray-tracing cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores. That gives it a stronger position in demanding ray-traced and path-traced games than its raster uplift might suggest.

Both GPUs support NVIDIA’s DLSS upscaling technology, and the RTX 4070 supports the Ada generation’s DLSS 3 feature set, including Frame Generation. The RTX 5070 adds support for DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and belongs to NVIDIA’s current DLSS 4.5 platform. The exact features available still depend on the game, driver, and software implementation. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 launch coverage explains the supported feature set.

What Multi Frame Generation actually does

Multi Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can produce a much higher reported frame rate in supported games, but those generated frames are not equivalent to fully rendered native frames.

Judge the experience by looking at:

  • The underlying rendered or “base” frame rate.
  • Input latency and responsiveness.
  • Image quality and motion artifacts.
  • Whether the game supports the feature properly.

A game producing 200–250 fps with Multi Frame Generation is not the same as a GPU rendering 200–250 native frames per second. The RTX 5070’s DLSS advantage is valuable, particularly for supported ray-traced games, but it is a feature advantage rather than a substitute for raw GPU performance.

1440p gaming

Both cards are primarily 1440p GPUs. The RTX 4070 is still a sensible choice for a 1440p system if it is inexpensive and your target frame rates are already satisfactory. The RTX 5070 is the better option for new buyers who want higher refresh rates, heavier ray tracing, or access to Multi Frame Generation.

The difference is most useful in demanding modern games rather than older raster-only titles. At 1440p, 12GB can remain adequate, but it is not an unlimited long-term guarantee for ultra textures, extensive mods, or increasingly demanding ray-traced games.

4K gaming

Neither card should be treated as an uncomplicated 4K ultra GPU. The RTX 5070 is the stronger 4K choice, especially with tuned settings, DLSS Super Resolution, and frame generation. The RTX 4070 can also handle 4K in suitable games, but its lower bandwidth and older feature set make it less compelling for a new 4K-focused build.

The shared 12GB capacity matters more at 4K. Ultra texture packs, path tracing, large open worlds, mods, and some creator workloads can push memory usage higher. VRAM use varies by game and settings, so 12GB does not automatically prevent 4K gaming; it does limit how aggressively you can target future ultra settings.

12GB of VRAM: the biggest shared limitation

The RTX 5070’s GDDR7 delivers about 33% more memory bandwidth than the RTX 4070’s memory, but both cards still have 12GB of VRAM. Higher bandwidth helps move data more quickly. It does not increase the amount of data that can fit in memory.

For a 1440p gaming build, 12GB is workable today in many titles. Buyers planning years of 4K gaming, heavy ray tracing, high-resolution video production, or local AI workloads should consider a card with more memory instead. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family comparison lists the RTX 5070 Ti with 16GB, making it a more direct answer to the capacity concern.

Power, connectors, and case compatibility

The RTX 5070 is rated at 250W, compared with approximately 200W for the RTX 4070. NVIDIA lists 650W recommended system power for the RTX 5070, although the exact board manufacturer’s guidance should take priority for a particular model.

For a reference-style RTX 5070 configuration, NVIDIA provides guidance involving either two PCIe 8-pin cables with an adapter or a suitable PCIe Gen 5 power cable. Check the exact card before buying. Also confirm:

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0

  • Case length, height, and thickness clearance.
  • Space for the power connector and cable bend.
  • Whether the power supply has the required native cable or adapter.
  • Power requirements for your CPU and other components.
  • The card’s warranty, especially for used or refurbished stock.

A quality 650W power supply can be sufficient for a reference-style system, but a higher-capacity unit is sensible with a high-power CPU, overclocking, or a factory-overclocked card. The RTX 4070’s lower power draw makes it attractive for small-form-factor, quieter, or older-PSU systems.

Video editing, streaming, and AI workloads

The RTX 5070 adds newer encoder and decoder capabilities, including hardware-accelerated 4:2:2 video processing. NVIDIA claims up to six-times-faster exports than the RTX 4070 in certain supported workflows. That is a workload-specific NVIDIA claim, not a universal result for every export, codec, or application.

For creators, separate these questions:

  • Does the application support the relevant codec and encoder?
  • Are you measuring export time or timeline playback?
  • Will AI effects benefit from newer Tensor hardware?
  • Does your project fit comfortably within 12GB of VRAM?
  • Is the workload GPU-bound, CPU-bound, or storage-bound?

The RTX 5070 is the more capable choice for newer supported video and AI workflows, but CUDA-core count alone is not enough to predict an application’s performance. The RTX 4070 remains useful for AV1 streaming and GPU-accelerated editing when its lower price outweighs the newer feature set.

Pricing: MSRP is not the same as the price you pay

The RTX 5070 launched at $549, $50 below the RTX 4070’s $599 launch MSRP. At those launch prices, the 5070 was the obvious new purchase.

That conclusion changes with availability. In a US market snapshot from August 16–18, 2026, Best Buy listed an RTX 5070 Founders Edition at $549.99, but the listing was unavailable when checked. PC Gamer’s August 14 price tracking showed RTX 5070 examples around $790.99 to $799.99 at major retailers, while Tom’s Hardware reported broader RTX 50-series price inflation above MSRP. These are dated market snapshots, not guaranteed current prices; check the exact listing immediately before buying.

Use the price gap—not the product generation—as the decision rule:

Price difference Practical recommendation
RTX 5070 costs the same or less Buy the RTX 5070.
5070 costs $50–$100 more Usually choose the 5070 for a new system.
5070 costs $100–$150 more Pay extra if you value DLSS 4, ray tracing, newer encoding, or warranty.
5070 costs $200 or more extra The RTX 4070 is generally better value for conventional 1440p gaming.

Compare the exact condition—new, used, open-box, or refurbished—along with warranty, return policy, cooler design, dimensions, and connector requirements.

Should RTX 4070 owners upgrade?

Usually no. An RTX 4070 owner should normally keep the card unless the upgrade cost is unusually low or the new features directly solve a problem.

The upgrade makes more sense when:

  • You regularly play supported games with demanding ray tracing.
  • You specifically want DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation.
  • You use newer 4:2:2 video workflows or AI features supported by Blackwell.
  • You can sell the RTX 4070 and move to the 5070 for a small net cost.
  • You need more performance for a high-refresh 1440p display.

It makes less sense when your current frame rates are already acceptable, your games are mainly rasterized, or you expect the RTX 5070 to solve VRAM concerns. It does not: both cards have 12GB.

Should new buyers choose the RTX 5070 or RTX 4070?

For a new build, choose the RTX 5070 when it is available near $549–$600. It is faster, more efficient in features per generation, has higher bandwidth, and supports NVIDIA’s newest gaming features.

Choose an RTX 4070 when it is meaningfully cheaper, especially as a reliable used card with remaining warranty. Paying nearly RTX 5070 money for an RTX 4070 gives up performance and newer feature support without a sufficient price advantage.

Why the RTX 4070 Super matters

The RTX 5070 is often positioned as closer to a newer-feature successor to the RTX 4070 Super than as a dramatic replacement for the original RTX 4070. That context explains why the 5070’s lead over the RTX 4070 can look reasonable while its lead over the 4070 Super is much smaller.

Always check which card a benchmark compares: RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti, or RTX 4070 Ti Super. Treating all “4070” results as interchangeable can produce the wrong buying conclusion. TechRadar’s 2026 graphics-card positioning and PCWorld’s review provide useful context.
