Microsoft’s Xbox Store shopping-cart test was a 2018 preview, not a new 2026 announcement. It let selected Xbox Insiders collect multiple supported purchases and check out once, with a cart that could sync across Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs and the web when users signed in with the same Microsoft account.
What Microsoft tested
Announced on August 14, 2018, the feature added a conventional cart to the Microsoft Store. Instead of buying each item in a separate transaction, users could put several supported products into one order and receive a unified order number. Microsoft’s examples included multiple games, a game with an app, or a movie with a game. The aim was checkout convenience, not a change to game licensing or a promise that a purchase on one platform included another version. Microsoft’s announcement and contemporary coverage from Thurrott describe the test.
Who could use it, and where did the cart work?
The initial console test was limited to Xbox Insiders in Preview Alpha – Skip Ahead, Preview Alpha and Preview Beta. “Xbox and PC” described the storefronts Microsoft said the cart could span; it did not mean every Xbox owner or Windows user immediately had access.
Microsoft described cart persistence across Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs and the Microsoft Store on the web. Users needed to sign in with the same Microsoft account to see the cart across those surfaces. The platform references are specific to the 2018 test: the announcement does not establish support for every later Xbox console or Windows edition.

What could go in the cart?
Microsoft said the cart supported physical products, Xbox One games and apps, and Windows 10 PC games and apps. That was not a universal Microsoft-products cart: the company specifically noted that Office 365 and eBooks could not be purchased through the Xbox Store. Product availability also depended on the storefront, so an item appearing elsewhere in Microsoft Store did not guarantee it could be bought from the Xbox console.
How the Xbox One preview worked
- Open the Store on an Xbox One console and select a supported game or app.
- On the product page, select the “…” button beside Buy, then choose Add to cart.
- The cart opens after the item is added. To return later, select the cart icon in the upper-right area of the Store.
- Review the items and check out together, or use Save for later to move an item out of the active cart while keeping it below for a possible future purchase.
The November preview iteration presented Add to Cart beneath the Buy button on supported product pages. That was a later UI version, not a contradiction of the August instructions. Microsoft’s November update described that revised flow.

Known preview issues and rollout caveats
Microsoft warned that the feature could take several hours to appear on an eligible console and that a hard reset might be needed. The company also listed these limitations in the initial test:
- Anonymous carts could show discrepancies on PC after users switched between “Do not track” and “Allow anonymous tracking.” Microsoft said this did not affect users signed in with a Microsoft account or Gamertag.
- Navigation in product carousels on the cart page had problems, including disabled scrolling.
- Some products could not be purchased through particular storefronts.
For that preview-era rollout, Microsoft’s guidance was to verify the console’s eligible Insider ring, allow time for access to appear, and try a hard reset if it did not. Signing in addressed the stated anonymous-cart synchronization issue; it could not make an unsupported product available through the Xbox Store. These were 2018 test notes, not current troubleshooting instructions. The cart also appeared in the Xbox One 1810 Insider preview cycle, as noted in the August 15 preview update.

What happened after the August test?
On August 20, 2018, Microsoft edited its announcement to say it was taking Shopping Cart offline for fixes and improvements, with a return planned in the following weeks. The first test therefore was not an uninterrupted public launch.
Microsoft announced an updated version for testing on November 5, 2018. Xbox Insiders were to test it first, Windows Insiders were expected to follow, and Microsoft planned broader availability after further testing. The announcement documents that plan; it does not by itself establish when or whether the planned general rollout occurred.

How the wish list fit in
The November update paired the revised cart with a wish list. Microsoft said lists would span Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs and the web, cover physical products and digital games and apps, show sale pricing and badges, and be shareable publicly or kept private. That was related storefront work, but distinct from the cart’s job of grouping purchases for checkout.
Why the feature mattered
The cart addressed a basic inconvenience: fewer separate checkout sessions when buying several supported items, plus the ability to continue shopping on another signed-in device. That was especially practical for collecting several purchases before checkout or setting an item aside with Save for later. It did not imply a discount, bundle, subscription, or cross-buy entitlement. The available announcements document 2018 Insider tests and intended expansion; they do not establish the status or identical behavior of a cart in Microsoft Store today.
