ShadowPlay is still NVIDIA’s name for its gameplay-capture features, but the current control center is the NVIDIA App, not the old GeForce Experience Share interface. Once the NVIDIA Overlay is enabled, Alt+Z opens the controls, Alt+F9 starts or stops a full recording, Alt+F10 saves the configured Instant Replay buffer, and Alt+F1 captures a screenshot. The shortcuts can be changed.
This guide explains how to install and configure ShadowPlay, save moments you did not plan to record, capture complete sessions, use Highlights, choose between H.264 and AV1, record audio and the desktop, find your files, and fix the problems most likely to prevent a clip from being saved.
ShadowPlay, NVIDIA App and GeForce Experience: what changed?
ShadowPlay is NVIDIA’s hardware-accelerated capture system. It can provide manual gameplay recording, a rolling Instant Replay buffer, screenshots, NVIDIA Highlights, microphone and system-audio capture, desktop capture where supported, HDR recording, codec selection and an on-screen performance overlay.
Older guides may call the controls GeForce Experience Share, NVIDIA Share or the ShadowPlay overlay. For a current Windows installation, start with the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA has encouraged GeForce Experience users to migrate to it, so GeForce Experience should not be treated as the default route for new setups. The PC feature is also separate from SHIELD TV’s device-specific “NVIDIA Share” function; the names are not interchangeable.

| Mode | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Record | Captures from the moment you start until you stop. | Walkthroughs, tutorials, full matches and long sessions. |
| Instant Replay | Maintains a temporary rolling buffer and saves the preceding configured interval when you invoke it. | Unexpected kills, bugs, wins and other moments you could not predict. |
| Highlights | Automatically saves developer-defined events in supported games. | Supported kills, streaks, boss fights or match events. |
Highlights are not a universal AI judge of everything impressive on screen. They depend on game integration and the event types that the developer exposes. For spontaneous moments in games without Highlights support, Instant Replay is the more dependable option.
What you need before recording
- A compatible NVIDIA GPU, current NVIDIA App and current graphics driver.
- A supported game or application. Feature availability varies with the GPU generation, laptop design, driver, Windows configuration, game, HDR path, resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Enough free space on the selected drive. High-resolution, high-frame-rate and long-form recordings can become large quickly.
- Optional headphones and a microphone if you want commentary or voice chat.
Do not assume that every NVIDIA GPU supports every ShadowPlay option. Check NVIDIA’s current GeForce graphics-card information or laptop information for your specific hardware. AV1 is especially hardware-dependent. NVIDIA’s published material identifies RTX 40-series AV1 support, while current release highlights list 240-FPS ShadowPlay recording for GeForce RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs.
Privacy warning: Desktop capture and microphone recording can include private messages, notifications, passwords, usernames and other people’s voices. Close confidential applications, disable notifications and obtain consent before recording voice chat.
Install and enable ShadowPlay in the NVIDIA App
- Download the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official site. Avoid third-party “ShadowPlay” installers and unofficial driver packages.
- Install the app and sign in if the current version requests an account for a particular feature.
- Use the app to install the latest Game Ready or Studio driver offered for your system.
- Restart the app, and restart Windows if the overlay does not appear immediately.
- Open the app’s Settings and enable NVIDIA Overlay.
- Launch a game and press Alt+Z.
If Alt+Z does nothing, confirm that the NVIDIA App is running and the overlay is enabled. Then update or reinstall the driver, restart the app, test a supported game in borderless or windowed mode, and temporarily disable competing overlays such as Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner and other capture utilities. Anti-cheat software or unusual compatibility settings can also block an overlay.

Practical starting presets
| Goal | Suggested starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday clips | 1080p, 60 FPS, H.264, moderate bitrate and a short replay duration. | Good compatibility, manageable files and low setup effort. |
| Editing footage | Native or high resolution, 60 or 120 FPS where supported, higher bitrate and AV1 if your editor supports it. | Preserves more detail, but needs a modern workflow and fast storage. |
| Competitive play | 1080p at 120 or 240 FPS where supported; avoid unnecessary resolution and replay length. | Reduces storage and workload while retaining high frame-rate motion. |
NVIDIA advertises capture up to 8K HDR at 30 FPS and 4K HDR at 120 FPS. Its release highlights list 240-FPS recording for RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs. These are capability ceilings for particular configurations, not guarantees for every game, laptop, display mode or driver. Test your actual game and settings.

Higher resolution, frame rate, bitrate, HDR and replay duration increase file size and disk activity. If the game already pushes your GPU, CPU or storage close to its limit, capture can affect frame pacing or performance even though hardware encoding may reduce overhead compared with software-only encoding.
Save unexpected moments with Instant Replay
Instant Replay must be running before the moment happens. It cannot reconstruct footage that was never placed in its rolling buffer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Alt+Z.
- Open Settings → Video Capture and choose the available Instant Replay length.
- Return to the overlay and switch Instant Replay on.
- Play normally. The app temporarily maintains the preceding interval.
- After the moment, press Alt+F10.
- Open the NVIDIA App Gallery or the configured folder to review the saved clip.
NVIDIA currently uses the last 30 seconds as a prominent example, but 30 seconds is not a universal permanent limit. The available duration and default can vary by app release and settings. A longer buffer uses more memory and can create larger files. It also saves only the selected preceding interval, not the entire match.
Record a complete gameplay session
- Launch the game and confirm the overlay works.
- Press Alt+F9 to begin recording.
- Press Alt+F9 again to stop.
- Review the resulting file in the Gallery or capture folder.
Full recording is preferable when an important event could happen at any time, when you are making a tutorial, or when you need a complete match for review. The trade-off is sustained disk writing, larger files, more footage to edit and a greater risk of filling the drive. For a long session, record to a drive with adequate free space rather than one already busy loading the game.
Capture screenshots
Press Alt+F1 for the default screenshot shortcut, or use the screenshot control in the overlay. The shortcut is configurable. Screenshot format, resolution, HDR handling and save behavior can vary with the NVIDIA App release and game.
Fullscreen mode, HDR games, anti-cheat restrictions and unusual rendering APIs can affect screenshots. If the result is blank or incorrectly exposed, test borderless or windowed mode and check the Gallery or configured save location.

Use NVIDIA Highlights
In a supported game, Highlights can save predefined events such as kills, streaks, boss fights or match-winning moments. Enable it globally or for the individual game if the current NVIDIA App and game settings expose that option. Some games also include their own NVIDIA Highlights switch.
A game can support Highlights while offering only a limited set of event types. A non-supported game may produce no Highlights even when ordinary recording works. If Highlights misses a memorable event, use Instant Replay: it lets you decide what matters instead of relying on an integrated trigger.
Choose H.264 or AV1
| Codec | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | You need broad playback, editing and upload compatibility. | Generally less efficient than newer codecs at comparable quality. |
| AV1 | Your NVIDIA hardware, editor and destination support it, and you want better quality per bit or smaller files. | Older software, devices and browsers may not decode it smoothly. |
NVIDIA places the codec control at Settings → Video Capture → Codec and reports up to roughly 40% compression efficiency relative to H.264. That is NVIDIA’s stated figure, not a guaranteed file-size reduction for every game, bitrate or scene. Hardware AV1 encoding does not guarantee AV1 decoding support throughout your workflow, and a smaller file is not automatically easier to edit.
Use H.264 when you want the fewest surprises. Use AV1 for a modern editing or archival workflow after testing a short clip. Upload platforms may transcode either format.
Record microphone, game audio and the desktop
Audio checklist
- Select the intended microphone in Windows and in the NVIDIA App.
- Set microphone volume before the session.
- Choose push-to-talk or always-on capture deliberately.
- Record a short test and inspect game audio and microphone audio separately.
- Use headphones to reduce microphone bleed.
- Check whether another application is also recording the microphone.
- Remember that voice-chat behavior varies with Windows default devices, exclusive-mode settings, Bluetooth hardware, virtual mixers and game-specific routing.
If the microphone is missing, verify Windows microphone permissions, select the correct input, check whether another application has exclusive control and test with a wired headset or another nonexclusive device. If game audio is missing or doubled, inspect the Windows output device, virtual audio cables and recording settings, then disable duplicate capture in OBS, Discord or another utility.
Desktop capture
Desktop capture is useful for software tutorials, launchers, browser demonstrations and games that do not hook correctly. Enable it from the capture settings when the option is available. It can record everything visible on the desktop, including private content, and protected video services or applications may appear black. Disable notifications and close confidential windows before enabling it.

- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
NVIDIA Broadcast can complement this workflow for noise removal, room-echo removal, virtual backgrounds and camera effects. It is useful for streams and commentary, but unnecessary for silent gameplay clips and adds processing complexity.
HDR recording: check the entire workflow
HDR capture requires a compatible HDR game, display path, GPU, driver and playback or editing workflow. A clip can look washed out or incorrectly exposed when opened in an SDR player or editor that does not interpret HDR metadata correctly.
Before recording a major session, make a short test and view it in an HDR-capable player. If you are publishing to an ordinary SDR destination, you may need tone mapping or conversion. NVIDIA’s advertised 8K HDR and 4K HDR modes are maximum capabilities, not universal presets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Find, organize, trim and share recordings
Open the NVIDIA App Gallery or return to Settings → Video Capture to see the configured save location. Do not rely on a hard-coded path: it can vary by installation and can be changed by the user.
If the Gallery shows a file that you moved manually, the media may no longer open because the Gallery database does not necessarily follow moved files. Check the actual folder and update your organization separately. A practical structure is:
Videos/ShadowPlay/Game Name/2026-08-18/
- Review the clip in the Gallery or file manager.
- Trim dead time and unwanted lead-in using your preferred editor or trimming tool.
- Check audio, HDR appearance, frame rate and aspect ratio.
- Rename the file with the game, event and date.
- Upload it to YouTube, Twitch, Discord, cloud storage or a social platform, or transfer it directly.
- Keep the original if you may later edit, crop or export the clip again.
Do not assume that the current NVIDIA App offers the same native destinations described in older GeForce Experience documentation. Use the sharing options visible in your installed release or upload the file yourself.

Troubleshoot common ShadowPlay problems
Alt+Z does not open
- Confirm the NVIDIA App is running and NVIDIA Overlay is enabled.
- Restart the app and update or reinstall the graphics driver.
- Try a supported game in borderless or windowed mode.
- Disable Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner and other overlays temporarily.
- Check whether anti-cheat software blocks the overlay.
- Verify that the shortcut has not been reassigned.
Instant Replay saves nothing
Confirm Instant Replay was enabled before the event, then check the configured folder, free disk space and whether the drive still exists. Test with a shorter replay length, temporarily disable desktop capture, restart the NVIDIA App and relaunch the game. If the buffer was off, the missed moment cannot be recovered.
The recording is black
Switch between fullscreen, borderless and windowed modes. Update the app and driver, disable competing overlays and try desktop capture when appropriate. Protected content, anti-cheat restrictions and game-specific rendering behavior can prevent capture; there is no universal fix.
Audio is missing or doubled
Check Windows input and output devices, NVIDIA capture settings, microphone permissions, exclusive-mode access and virtual mixer routing. Disable duplicate microphone capture in other applications and test with headphones.
The video looks washed out
Test HDR on and off, use an HDR-capable player, and verify that your editor interprets HDR metadata correctly. Convert or tone-map the footage for SDR destinations when necessary.
Recording lowers performance
Reduce resolution, frame rate, bitrate or Instant Replay duration. Record to a faster or separate SSD, compare H.264 and AV1 on your system, and avoid recording to the same heavily used drive as the game. Actual impact depends on GPU load, CPU load, storage, codec, game engine and settings.
Highlights never appear
Check that the game supports NVIDIA Highlights, enable the feature for that game, inspect the game’s own settings and confirm that the relevant event type is supported. Use Instant Replay as the fallback.
ShadowPlay versus the alternatives
| If you need… | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-hotkey retrospective clips | ShadowPlay | Instant Replay is fast and integrated with compatible NVIDIA hardware. |
| Scenes, browser sources, alerts and advanced audio | OBS Studio | Offers extensive source, scene, stream and encoder control. |
| Basic Windows recording without NVIDIA hardware | Xbox Game Bar | Simple built-in Windows capture for supported systems. |
| Capture on Radeon hardware | AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Provides AMD’s own recording and replay workflow. |
| Capture on supported Intel graphics | Intel’s capture tools | Designed for compatible Intel Arc or integrated-graphics systems. |
ShadowPlay is the strongest fit when you already have compatible NVIDIA hardware and want quick gameplay clips, screenshots and replay capture with little configuration. OBS Studio is the better choice for streaming production, multiple sources, detailed audio routing or a hardware-independent workflow. Buying an NVIDIA GPU solely for occasional short clips is difficult to justify when OBS or Xbox Game Bar already meets your needs.
Is ShadowPlay free?
The NVIDIA App presents ShadowPlay as a software feature rather than a separate paid subscription. You still need compatible NVIDIA hardware, storage and, where relevant, accounts or paid software for editing and publishing.
