Don’t Panic! What Happens to Your Games When You Reinstall Steam?

Your Steam purchases survive a reinstall, but local games and saves need protection. Here’s how to back up Steam libraries, restore games, and avoid a huge redownload.

Your Steam account, purchases, and game licenses remain tied to your account when you reinstall Steam. The danger is local data: uninstalling Steam can remove installed game files, especially games stored inside the main Steam folder. Saves, mods, screenshots, and settings are separate and may not all be recoverable from Steam Cloud.

Before removing anything, exit Steam and back up steamapps, userdata, your game saves, and mod files. Valve warns that uninstalling Steam removes Steam and installed game content, and recommends moving steamapps or creating a backup first. See Valve’s uninstall guidance.

Reinstalling Steam is not the same as losing your Steam library

Steam has two separate parts:

  • Your account: owns your purchases and records your licenses.
  • Your PC’s local files: contain the Steam client, downloaded games, saves, mods, screenshots, and configuration data.

Reinstalling the client does not revoke your purchases. After installation, sign in to the same Steam account and your Library should return. However, Steam may need to rediscover games already on your drives, and a careless uninstall can delete those local installations.

A game showing an Install button does not always mean its files are gone. Steam may simply have lost the library location or the local registration information that tells it where the game is installed.

Three meanings of “reinstall Steam”

1. Restarting or updating Steam

Restarting Steam, rebooting Windows, or allowing Steam to update should not intentionally remove installed games. Try this first for a one-time freeze, login problem, or minor client glitch.

2. A repair-style reinstall

A repair-style reinstall replaces damaged Steam client files while preserving the important library and user folders. This is usually the best approach when Steam itself is broken but your games are still intact.

Valve’s moving-installation guidance identifies steamapps, userdata, and steam.exe as items to retain when restoring or moving Steam. Read Valve’s library and installation guidance.

3. A full uninstall and clean reinstall

A full uninstall is appropriate when you deliberately want to remove Steam completely or a repair has failed. It carries the greatest risk because locally installed games may be inside the directory being removed. Back up first, even if you believe your games are stored elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will uninstalling Steam delete your installed games?

It can. Games installed beneath the main Steam directory are at particular risk. A common Windows installation looks like this:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps

If that folder is removed during uninstall, the game files beneath it can disappear too. Valve explicitly warns that uninstalling Steam removes Steam and installed game content.

Games in a separate library are usually safer because their files are stored outside the client’s installation directory:

D:SteamLibrary
E:GamesSteamLibrary

Even then, the newly installed client may not automatically recognize them. You may need to add the existing library again. A disconnected drive, changed drive letter, missing manifest files, or an incorrectly copied folder can make Steam display those games as uninstalled even though much of the data remains on disk.

Data What normally happens
Steam account and purchases Remain attached to your account; sign in again after reinstalling.
Games inside the Steam installation folder May be deleted by an uninstall.
Games in a separate library Often remain on the drive, but may need to be added again.
Steam Cloud saves May return if the game supports Cloud and the newest save synchronized successfully.
Non-Cloud saves May remain outside Steam, but their locations vary by game and must be backed up manually.
userdata Contains valuable local Steam data, screenshots, and game-related data, but is not a complete backup of every save.
Mods and custom files May survive, be removed, or become incompatible depending on what is uninstalled, reinstalled, or verified.
Settings, categories, shortcuts, and local configuration May be reset or lost.

What to back up before reinstalling Steam on Windows

Use this procedure before running the normal uninstall process.

  1. Exit Steam completely. Use Steam > Exit, not merely the window’s close button. If Steam refuses to close, check Task Manager and confirm that it is no longer running.
  2. Find every Steam Library. Before uninstalling, open Steam’s storage or library-management area and record the location of every library, including libraries on secondary or external drives.
  3. Back up steamapps. This contains game installations and important library metadata. If it is inside the main Steam folder, copy or move it to another drive or a safe folder outside that directory.
  4. Back up userdata. Keep this folder because it contains important local Steam-user data, screenshots, and game-specific data. Do not assume it contains every game’s save.
  5. Back up saves separately. Check Documents, Saved Games, and the hidden AppData folders described below.
  6. Back up mods and custom files. Include mod-manager profiles, load orders, ReShade files, manually installed files, custom configurations, and other game-specific data.
  7. Only then uninstall Steam if a clean removal is genuinely necessary.

Common Windows locations include:

C:Program Files (x86)Steam
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
<Drive>:SteamLibrary
<Drive>:SteamLibrarysteamappscommon
C:Users<name>Documents
C:Users<name>Saved Games
C:Users<name>AppDataLocal
C:Users<name>AppDataLocalLow
C:Users<name>AppDataRoaming

These are common paths, not universal ones. AppData is hidden by default, and each game’s developer decides where local saves and settings are stored.

Are your saves safe?

Steam Cloud saves

Steam Cloud can restore saves after a reinstall, but only when the game supports Steam Cloud and the latest local save successfully synchronized. Cloud is not a guarantee that every save is present or current.

Before uninstalling:

  • Start the game once while connected to the internet.
  • Exit normally and give Steam time to synchronize.
  • Look for a Cloud warning or synchronization conflict.
  • Do not blindly choose between local and cloud versions if Steam reports conflicting files.

If a game uses a separate launcher or account system, its saves may follow that service’s rules instead of Steam’s.

Local saves

Non-Cloud saves are often found in locations such as DocumentsMy Games, but they may also be stored in Saved Games, AppDataLocal, AppDataLocalLow, or AppDataRoaming. Some games store saves in their installation directory or use a publisher launcher.

Valve likewise warns that non-Cloud save locations vary and may require information from the game’s developer or publisher. Search for the game’s title and back up relevant folders before uninstalling.

The safest way to reinstall Steam without redownloading everything

For a damaged client, use a preservation-first repair:

  1. Exit Steam completely.
  2. Locate and back up every steamapps folder.
  3. Back up userdata, saves, mods, screenshots, and custom configuration.
  4. Preserve the existing library folders rather than deleting them.
  5. Install the current Steam client.
  6. Sign in to the same Steam account.
  7. Add the existing Steam Library locations.
  8. Verify affected games and test your saves.

If Steam is frozen and cannot be closed normally, the advanced Windows command taskkill /IM steam.exe /F can force it to close. Use it only as a last resort because it can interrupt unsaved client activity. No command-line “magic reinstall” is required for the normal process.

How to make Steam recognize existing games

Add the existing library

  1. Install Steam and sign in.
  2. Open Steam > Settings.
  3. Open the Storage or Steam Library folders area. The exact wording may vary slightly between client builds and platforms.
  4. Add the drive or folder containing the existing Steam Library.
  5. Return to your Library and let Steam scan the location.

The correct structure normally looks like this:

<SteamLibrary>steamappscommon<GameFolder>

The library’s steamapps folder should also contain the game’s appmanifest_*.acf file. Do not delete or casually edit those manifest files: they help Steam identify installed titles.

If the game still says “Install”

  1. Confirm that the game folder is inside the correct library’s steamappscommon directory.
  2. Confirm that the steamapps folder was not nested one level too deep, such as SteamLibrarySteamLibrarysteamapps.
  3. Check that the correct drive is connected and has the expected drive letter.
  4. Check that you are signed into the account that owns the game.
  5. Click Install and select the existing library as the destination.
  6. Allow Steam to inspect the existing files rather than assuming it will download everything.

Steam often detects usable files this way, but it cannot guarantee a complete recovery. Missing manifests, incomplete files, permissions problems, a changed path, or a different account can cause a full or partial download.

If Steam immediately starts downloading the entire game, pause it and exit Steam. Recheck the library path and folder nesting, then try again. If the files are incomplete or damaged, some download may be unavoidable.

Verify games after Steam finds them

Once a game appears as installed:

  1. Right-click it in your Steam Library.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files.

Valve recommends verifying games after moving or restoring a Steam installation. Verification compares local files with Steam’s expected files and may redownload missing or damaged data.

It can also replace modified files. If you use mods, manually edited files, or ReShade, back them up first and expect to reinstall or reconfigure them after verification.

What happens to mods, screenshots, and settings?

Mods and custom content

A Steam client reinstall is not the same as reinstalling every game. Files manually placed in steamappscommon<game> may remain if the game folder is preserved, but they can be replaced when the game is reinstalled or verified.

Back up:

  • Mod-manager profiles and load orders
  • Manually installed mod files
  • ReShade or injector files
  • Custom configuration files
  • Shader caches where relevant
  • Workshop-related local data
  • Separate launcher and anti-cheat configuration

Screenshots and Steam settings

Local screenshots and some Steam-user data may be stored under userdata. Categories, shortcuts, client settings, and other local configuration may reset during a clean reinstall. Preserve userdata and any separate screenshot folders you care about.

  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

If Steam still does not recognize your games

  1. Check the drive letter. If the library was on D: and Windows now assigns it E:, add the library at its new path or restore the original letter.
  2. Check the drive connection. A disconnected or sleeping external drive can make every game on it appear uninstalled.
  3. Check folder nesting. The folder you add should contain steamapps, not another folder that contains the actual library.
  4. Check metadata. The steamapps folder and app manifest files help Steam identify installations. If they are missing, use the Install-to-existing-folder process.
  5. Check permissions. Changed NTFS permissions can prevent Steam from reading or writing the library.
  6. Check the account. Sign into the account that purchased or previously used the games.
  7. Use Install carefully. Point Steam to the existing library so it can inspect the files.
  8. Verify the game. Once recognized, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  9. Restore from backup if needed. If the original files or metadata were deleted, Steam Cloud may help with compatible saves, but it cannot restore every local game file.

If an external drive intermittently disconnects, resolve that storage problem before repeatedly verifying or reinstalling games. Repeated interruptions can create additional missing or damaged files.

When you should not reinstall Steam

Reinstalling the client is often unnecessary:

  • For a single game that will not launch, verify that game first.
  • For a one-time freeze, restart Steam and Windows.
  • For a library problem, use Steam’s storage and library-management tools.
  • For missing files, check available disk space, drive health, permissions, and antivirus quarantine.
  • For a mod-related failure, test the unmodded game before replacing the entire Steam client.

Security software can sometimes quarantine or block Steam or game files. Check its quarantine and exclusion history before deleting folders, while keeping security protections enabled and changing exclusions only when you understand the risk.

Steam Deck and SteamOS: do not use the Windows procedure blindly

Steam Deck has different recovery options and data locations. Restarting Steam, reinstalling SteamOS, performing a factory reset, and reimaging the device are not equivalent.

Some SteamOS recovery operations can clear local user data and games. Valve’s recovery guidance distinguishes troubleshooting actions from options that erase local data. Check Valve’s SteamOS recovery documentation before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up saves and personal files before using recovery tools. Games on a microSD card may survive some operations, but do not rely on that without a current backup plan: the result depends on the operation, the storage setup, and the data involved.

Offline play after reinstalling

If you need to play without internet access, launch the games you want to use offline while Steam is still online and confirm they are ready. Steam’s offline guidance notes that offline Steam and games will not receive updates. See Valve’s offline-mode guidance.

This is separate from whether your games survive a reinstall, but preparing offline mode before losing connectivity can prevent another problem later.
