Yes—the April 22, 2015 announcement was genuine. NVIDIA representatives said the original SHIELD Tablet would move to Android 5.1, while the SHIELD Portable would skip the earlier Android L release and jump from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1 MR1. The devices did not update at the same time: the Tablet received Software Upgrade 3.0, and the Portable later received Software Upgrade 103.
What NVIDIA announced on April 22, 2015
The announcement came through NVIDIA community-forum statements quoted by contemporary coverage, rather than a conventional NVIDIA newsroom press release. NVIDIA said both updates were being prepared and would arrive in the “coming weeks,” so April 22 was a confirmation of the plan—not proof that either OTA was available that day.
For Tablet owners, NVIDIA framed Android 5.1 as a corrective release after complaints about performance and responsiveness following the earlier Lollipop rollout. Coverage also cited a reported Netflix problem, but that was a user-impact example rather than a defect documented as affecting every unit. The Portable was on a different path: it would move directly from KitKat to Android 5.1 MR1 instead of receiving an earlier Android L build.
Droid Life’s April 22 report and Android Authority’s contemporaneous account preserve the original statements and context.

The Tablet’s update: Software Upgrade 3.0
The original SHIELD Tablet had already received Android 5.0 in November 2014 through Upgrade 2.0 and Android 5.0.1 in December. NVIDIA later documented the Android 5.1 release as SHIELD Tablet Software Upgrade 3.0.
According to NVIDIA’s official release notes, Upgrade 3.0 included:
- Android operating-system upgrade to version 5.1.
- Performance and responsiveness improvements.
- Enhanced security, including Android for Work support.
- Quick-settings and profile-management improvements.
- A user-toggleable Global Tone Mapping option intended to improve display performance.
- SHIELD controller pairing and other firmware optimizations.
- System-wide camera and audio fixes.
- LTE-modem improvements for LTE models.
- Additional bug fixes.
These are NVIDIA’s listed changes, not the result of a controlled independent benchmark. The complete official list is in the SHIELD Tablet Upgrade 3.0 release notes. Earlier Tablet versions are preserved in NVIDIA’s release-note archive.

The Portable’s update: Software Upgrade 103
The SHIELD Portable remained on Android 4.4 KitKat when NVIDIA made the announcement. A later rollout report said Android 5.1 arrived as Software Upgrade 103 on July 23, 2015.
Contemporaneous reporting listed two notable changes:
- Chromecast support for sending compatible content to a television.
- Removal of games that were incompatible with Android 5.1.
NVIDIA’s SHIELD open-source archive separately references official Portable OTA 5.1 software and driver materials. However, a complete surviving consumer-facing NVIDIA changelog for Upgrade 103 is not available in the cited material, so the feature list above should not be treated as exhaustive.

Timeline: announcement versus actual rollout
| Date | Event |

| December 23, 2014 | The Tablet received Android 5.0.1. |
| April 22, 2015 | NVIDIA representatives confirmed Android 5.1 plans for both devices and said the updates were coming in the following weeks. |

The timeline matters because the Tablet and Portable followed different software paths and did not receive a same-day update.

Historically, NVIDIA’s Tablet instructions used this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select About SHIELD.
- Choose System updates.
In 2026, an OTA notification is not guaranteed. Before attempting an update, back up important data, charge the device, use reliable Wi‑Fi, and do not interrupt installation. Identify the hardware first: original SHIELD Tablet, SHIELD Tablet LTE, SHIELD Tablet K1, and SHIELD Portable are different products. Do not cross-flash Tablet, K1, or Portable firmware. If OTA checking fails, use only model-specific NVIDIA recovery or developer documentation; the cited archive is not a promise that every recovery download or server still works.

Safety and compatibility cautions
Check the original Tablet recall
NVIDIA issued a voluntary recall for certain 8-inch SHIELD Tablets sold between July 2014 and July 2015 because of a battery fire hazard. Not every original Tablet was recalled. Check the eligibility information in NVIDIA’s recall notice before continued use.
Do not confuse the Tablet with the Tablet K1
The later SHIELD Tablet K1 has its own software history and release-note path. NVIDIA’s K1 documentation should not be used as a substitute for original-Tablet instructions.
Android 5.1 is obsolete now
The update improved the devices’ 2015 software position, but Android 5.1 is not a current security or app-compatibility solution. Modern applications, streaming services, websites, and security systems may no longer support it. On the Portable, some older games were removed because they did not work with Android 5.1; unofficial firmware can add boot, DRM, controller, or game-compatibility risks.

Bottom line
NVIDIA’s April 2015 promise was fulfilled, but on separate schedules. The original Tablet moved from Android 5.0.1 to Android 5.1 in official Upgrade 3.0, while the Portable later jumped from KitKat to Android 5.1 MR1 through Upgrade 103. Treat the information as historical software support, and verify recall status and model identity before working on an old device.
