Nintendo’s Miitomo Social App Arrived on Google Play in 2016—Here’s What Happened

Nintendo released Miitomo on Google Play in the Western rollout on March 31, 2016, alongside the iOS version. It was Nintendo’s first smart-device app: a Mii-based social service for answering questions, sharing responses, making photos and collecting virtual clothing—not a conventional Nintendo game. Miitomo is no longer available; Nintendo ended the service worldwide on May 9, 2018.

What launched, and when?

Miitomo first launched in Japan on March 17, 2016. The Western release followed on March 31 for Android and iOS, including the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and European markets. The Android edition was distributed through Google Play.

Nintendo’s investor briefing described a staged rollout rather than a simultaneous worldwide release: Nintendo’s February 2016 briefing. Its UK announcement called Miitomo the company’s first app made exclusively for smart devices: Nintendo’s launch-plan announcement.

What Miitomo actually did

Miitomo centered every interaction on a user-created Mii. The service was closer to an avatar-driven conversation app than to a platformer, racing game or role-playing game.

Create and customize a Mii

Users built a Mii by choosing its appearance and personality. The launch version could use a selfie as a starting point, after which the avatar could be edited manually.

Answer questions and talk through friends

Miitomo posed casual or personal questions, then let users share their answers with friends. Friends’ responses became conversation prompts, with the Mii acting as the intermediary rather than a conventional text-messaging interface.

Make Miifoto images

Miifoto tools placed Mii characters into photos and allowed visual edits. These shareable images were one of the app’s creative features.

Collect clothing and virtual items

Users earned in-app coins and spent them on clothing and other customization items. Miitomo Drop provided a separate way to obtain items. The social loop worked best when friends were also participating, so the app was not a self-contained single-player Nintendo experience.

What users needed in 2016

  1. Create or use a Nintendo Account. The launch setup required linking a Nintendo Account to Miitomo.
  2. Make a Mii. Users could start from a selfie or build the avatar directly, then adjust its appearance and personality.
  3. Add friends. Questions, shared answers and other social activity depended on an active friend network.

This requirement was part of Nintendo’s broader account and My Nintendo strategy. It did not require a Nintendo Switch; that console had not yet launched, and a current Nintendo Account cannot restore Miitomo’s discontinued social service.

Was Miitomo free?

Contemporaneous launch coverage described Miitomo as free to download and use, with optional in-app purchases. Users could earn coins, buy additional coins and acquire clothing or other virtual items. Those were March 2016 monetization details, not current offers. Droid Life’s launch report documented the Google Play listing, setup flow and purchase model.

Why Nintendo considered it important

Miitomo was the first major result of Nintendo’s mobile partnership with DeNA and the first Nintendo app made exclusively for smart devices. Rather than porting an existing console game, Nintendo used the familiar Mii identity system to test account linking, social engagement and the operation of a persistent mobile service.

Nintendo said the experience and operational knowledge gained from Miitomo could inform later smart-device apps and games. That is a stated learning objective, not proof that Miitomo directly caused any particular later release.

What happened to Miitomo?

Nintendo announced the end of service in January 2018 and shut Miitomo down worldwide on May 9, 2018. After the termination, the app could no longer be used or downloaded through official channels. Nintendo’s support notice explains the shutdown: Miitomo end-of-service announcement. Nintendo’s Japanese notice records the original March 17, 2016 launch and the May 9, 2018 termination: Nintendo Japan’s notice.

Some users who had linked Miitomo could continue using their Miitomo Mii as a Nintendo Account avatar. That did not preserve Miitomo’s questions, friend interactions, Miifoto features or other online functions.

Can you install Miitomo on a modern Android phone?

No official active Google Play version exists in 2026. The historical 2016 Android release does not establish compatibility with current Android devices, and an old APK cannot be assumed to connect to Nintendo’s ended servers. Unofficial APKs, patched copies and fan-run revival projects are not the original Google Play service and should not be treated as official replacements.

Bottom line

“Miitomo now available on Google Play” was accurate news on March 31, 2016: Nintendo had launched a Mii-centered social app in the West for Android and iOS. It offered avatar customization, question-based friend interaction, Miifoto creations and optional purchases. The experiment ended worldwide on May 9, 2018, so Miitomo is now a discontinued piece of Nintendo’s early mobile strategy rather than a downloadable app.
