NVIDIA’s July 2018 update moved SHIELD TV from its older, SHIELD-focused cloud-gaming service to the newer GeForce NOW service already offered on PC and Mac. Contemporary coverage said the then-supported PC/Mac catalog—225 games—would also be available on SHIELD TV. This was a service-generation transition, not a claim about today’s catalog or a new 2026 launch.
What NVIDIA unified in July 2018
Before the change, NVIDIA operated two different GeForce NOW experiences. SHIELD TV had a curated catalog and a subscription-oriented model, while the PC/Mac version allowed users to connect supported games from linked storefront accounts. NVIDIA’s transition placed SHIELD TV on the PC/Mac service generation.
The practical promise reported at the time was broad catalog alignment: all 225 titles supported by the PC/Mac service were expected to run on SHIELD TV. The number is a historical July 2018 count, not the size of GeForce NOW today.
What changed for SHIELD TV owners
- SHIELD TV moved to the newer GeForce NOW service rather than remaining on the older SHIELD-only service.
- The supported PC/Mac catalog was intended to be available on the television-connected device.
- The service model became closer to PC/Mac GeForce NOW, including support for linked storefront accounts where a title was supported.
What did not change
- The update did not make every PC game compatible. Storefront linking never meant that every owned title was supported.
- It did not make every client identical. Menus, controls, device capabilities and performance could still vary by endpoint.
- It did not turn SHIELD TV into a local gaming PC. Games were rendered in NVIDIA’s cloud.
Could SHIELD TV users play the same games as PC users?
For the titles supported by the service at that time, yes: NVIDIA’s reported 225-game PC/Mac catalog was to be available on SHIELD TV. That means catalog eligibility was intended to be shared, not that the experience was identical in every respect.

Keyboard and mouse remained relevant
Some PC titles used keyboard-and-mouse controls. Connecting SHIELD TV to a television did not automatically make those games comfortable or fully playable with a controller. A controller was suitable for controller-supported games, while keyboard-and-mouse titles could require additional input hardware and a suitable playing position.
Supported ownership was still the rule
The PC/Mac service allowed users to link supported storefront accounts, but GeForce NOW has always depended on title support. Owning a game in Steam or another connected store does not by itself establish that NVIDIA can stream it.

GeForce NOW versus GameStream on SHIELD
“Streaming to SHIELD” can describe two separate technologies. GeForce NOW runs the game on NVIDIA’s cloud infrastructure. GameStream streamed a compatible game from the user’s own GeForce-equipped PC to SHIELD over a local network.
| Feature | GeForce NOW | GameStream |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | NVIDIA’s cloud servers | The user’s own GeForce PC |
| Internet requirement | Required for the cloud session | Local network connection between PC and SHIELD; internet could be needed for other services |
| Game source | Supported cloud catalog or supported games in linked stores | Games installed on the paired PC |
| Typical purpose | Play without maintaining a gaming PC at the TV | Use a home gaming PC as the rendering system |
NVIDIA’s SHIELD documentation describes GameStream pairing by discovering and connecting the SHIELD to the GeForce PC. That workflow is separate from the 2018 GeForce NOW service migration.

Do not confuse GeForce NOW with the NVIDIA Games app
The NVIDIA Games surface on SHIELD can also list local Android games. Seeing a game in that interface does not prove it is a GeForce NOW cloud title. The relevant distinction is whether the game is running locally on SHIELD, streaming from a user-owned PC through GameStream, or rendering in NVIDIA’s cloud through GeForce NOW.
How the current service differs from the 2018 story
NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW FAQ describes a cloud-streaming service in which users connect game-store accounts for supported games. Supported free-to-play titles can be played without purchasing them, and cloud saves for supported games can allow progress to continue across supported devices.

The current device list includes SHIELD TV as well as PCs, Macs, phones, tablets, Steam Deck, Linux PCs and selected televisions. NVIDIA identifies North America, Europe, Japan and India for its own service, with Alliance partners serving other locations. Availability, membership limits, supported devices and the game catalog can change, so check NVIDIA’s live service and status information for the country and device being used.
Modern features are not evidence about the 2018 client
Later release notes describe features that evolved independently by device and membership tier. For example, PC/Mac library synchronization was described as requiring a public Steam profile and manual synchronization after new purchases. The same cumulative notes record a historical Ultimate-tier target of 4K HDR on SHIELD TV. Neither detail should be read back into the July 2018 migration without the relevant date, tier and hardware requirements.

What this means for a TV setup today
For a current living-room setup, evaluate the endpoint rather than assuming that the 2018 unification guarantees identical behavior.
Check these before starting
- Whether GeForce NOW officially supports the device and region.
- Whether the game is listed as supported and whether its store account can be linked.
- Which membership tier controls resolution, frame rate, session length or queue priority.
- Whether the game expects a controller, keyboard and mouse, or both.
- Whether the home network is suitable; a wired connection can be preferable for a fixed TV installation, while Wi-Fi quality depends on distance, interference and router performance.
SHIELD TV
SHIELD TV remains listed by NVIDIA as a supported GeForce NOW endpoint. The 2018 transition does not show that existing SHIELD owners needed to buy a new box; it changed the service generation delivered to the device.
Amazon Fire TV as a later option
On February 12, 2026, NVIDIA announced a GeForce NOW app for selected Fire TV Stick generations. The initial specification called for up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, SDR, H.264 video and stereo audio, with a compatible controller. That announcement concerns a later TV platform and is unrelated to the 2018 SHIELD migration.
Bottom line for the 2018 announcement
NVIDIA unified the service experience behind SHIELD TV and PC/Mac GeForce NOW by moving SHIELD users onto the newer service generation. At the time, the supported catalog was reported as 225 games, and those titles were intended to be playable on SHIELD TV. The unification concerned cloud-service access and catalog alignment—not identical clients, universal game compatibility, or GameStream from a personal PC.
