It is designed mainly to reduce the shader-compilation wait and some shader-related stutter that can follow a GeForce driver update—not to eliminate every compilation pause or make a newly installed game skip its first shader-generation pass.
What Nvidia’s Auto Shader Compilation actually does
Games compile shader programs into code suited to their engine, graphics API, GPU and driver. That work can happen during installation, on first launch, after a game patch, after a driver update, or dynamically when a new effect or area appears.
A driver update can invalidate existing shader-cache data. The game then has to rebuild shaders the next time you launch it, often producing a long “Compiling shaders” screen or stutter while compilation happens during play. Nvidia’s beta moves part of that repeated work into the background: the NVIDIA App uses shader data the game has already generated and rebuilds applicable DirectX 12 shaders while the system is idle. You can also start the process manually.
This is local cache rebuilding. Nvidia is not downloading a universal, ready-made shader database for every game.

What it can—and cannot—fix
Where it helps
- Rebuilding existing DX12 shader data after a GeForce driver update.
- Reducing the chance that the next launch presents the full post-update compilation wait.
- Potentially reducing some shader-related runtime stutter when the relevant shaders are already known and successfully rebuilt.
Where it does not help
- First launch of a newly installed game: Nvidia says the game must still generate its initial shaders in-game.
- Every graphics API, game or shader workload. The announcement specifically describes DirectX 12 support.
- All game-patch recompilation. A patch can change shader inputs and require new work.
- Every form of stutter. Asset streaming, CPU limits, driver bugs, dynamic shader generation and other engine issues can remain.
- A guaranteed reduction in total loading time. Nvidia has not published a universal seconds-saved or percentage result.
The practical distinction is important: this beta changes when some compilation happens. It does not make the underlying compilation disappear.
Requirements and current status
- Driver: GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer, according to Nvidia’s announcement: Nvidia’s feature announcement.
- App: The NVIDIA App with the feature available in its graphics settings.
- Games: Windows games using supported DirectX 12 shader workloads.
- Beta: Nvidia’s release-highlights page still labels Automatic Shader Compilation as beta as of August 18, 2026: NVIDIA App release highlights.
Nvidia’s cited material does not provide a complete GPU-generation compatibility table or a fixed minimum NVIDIA App build. Do not assume that every GeForce model or every Windows configuration is covered simply because the driver is new enough.

How to enable Automatic Shader Compilation
- Open the NVIDIA App.
- Open the Graphics tab.
- Select Global Settings.
- Find Shader Cache.
- Turn on Automatic Shader Compilation (Beta).
- To start immediately, open the three-dot menu on the Shader Cache screen and choose Compile Now.
Menu wording can change between NVIDIA App revisions, but the setting belongs in Global Settings rather than a game-specific graphics page. Installing a qualifying driver alone does not enable it; Nvidia says the option is off by default.
When to use Compile Now
Manual compilation is useful after a major driver update, before playing a frequently used DX12 game, or when you want the work finished while the laptop is plugged in and unattended. Otherwise, leave the automatic option enabled and give the PC an idle period.

What to expect while it runs
Background compilation still consumes resources. Nvidia has not published a fixed CPU percentage, schedule, additional storage amount or bandwidth requirement. The actual activity varies with the number of installed games, each game’s shader set, CPU speed, storage device and whether the driver update invalidated that cache.
- You may see temporary CPU and disk activity or increased fan noise.
- A laptop can use battery power and may pause the job during sleep, hibernation or aggressive power-saving states.
- Running Compile Now while plugged in is the predictable choice for a notebook.
- The feature is most meaningful after a game has been launched at least once, because there must be existing shader data to rebuild.
There is no Nvidia-published universal time saving. Results depend on whether a particular game normally compiles before launch, during play, or both.

Troubleshooting
The option is missing
First update the NVIDIA App and confirm the driver is 595.97 WHQL or newer. Check Graphics → Global Settings → Shader Cache, not a per-game page, then restart the app or Windows if an update has just been installed. Nvidia’s cited announcement does not publish a full list of GPU, operating-system or driver-branch exclusions, so an unsupported configuration or staged app availability is also possible.
Compilation never appears to finish
- Make sure the PC is genuinely idle rather than running a game, render, benchmark or large download.
- Prevent the system from sleeping before the job can complete.
- Check that the drive has free space and that the app and driver are current.
- Launch the affected game at least once so its initial shaders exist.
Do not clear the shader cache as a first response: deleting it can force the compilation work to start over.

The game still stutters
Compare the same title before and after a driver update rather than assuming every pause is shader compilation. Continued stutter can come from dynamic shaders triggered in a new area, incomplete shader coverage, a game patch, asset streaming, a CPU bottleneck or a game/driver bug. Automatic Shader Compilation is not a guarantee of stutter-free play.

Microsoft is pursuing a different model. Advanced Shader Delivery supports distributing precompiled shader databases through compatible storefront, game and hardware combinations. Microsoft reported expanded support for additional AMD devices and the Xbox PC app in 2026, but availability remains title- and device-dependent.
| საკითხ | Nvidia Automatic Shader Compilation | Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Main method | Rebuilds existing shader data locally | Delivers precompiled shader data |
| Primary timing | After driver changes, while Windows is idle, or on demand | During or around game download and installation |
| New-game first launch | Still requires the game’s initial in-game shader generation | Can reduce first-launch compilation for supported titles |
| Integration | NVIDIA App and GeForce driver environment | Requires compatible developer, storefront, API and hardware support |
| Current status | Beta in the NVIDIA App | Public preview with expanding but limited support |
These systems are complementary, not interchangeable. Microsoft’s approach cannot help a game that lacks delivery support, while Nvidia’s beta can still be useful for post-driver-update cache rebuilding on a supported GeForce setup.
Should you turn it on?
Enable it if
- You update GeForce drivers regularly.
- You play several DirectX 12 games and dislike post-update compilation screens.
- You use a desktop or usually play on a plugged-in laptop.
- You accept occasional background CPU and storage activity.
Leave it off if
- You mainly use a laptop on battery and want to minimize background work.
- Your PC is routinely busy with CPU-heavy tasks.
- You rarely update drivers or rarely encounter shader waits.
- You are unwilling to run beta software or have very limited storage headroom.
For most desktop GeForce players who frequently update drivers, enabling the beta is a low-effort convenience. It is not a reason by itself to buy a newer RTX card: shader compilation also depends on the game engine, CPU, storage, driver and cache state. Nvidia’s official driver download page is available here if you need to verify the required driver.

Automatic Shader Compilation is best understood as a post-driver-update cache rebuild performed before you next need it. Enable it in the NVIDIA App if you want to trade a little background CPU and disk activity for a better chance of avoiding a foreground DX12 compilation wait. Keep expectations narrow: newly installed games still compile their initial shaders, game patches and dynamic runtime work can still cause stutter, and Nvidia has not promised a universal load-time reduction.
