Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 5090 SOLID review: Zotac’s flagship GPU vs. Nvidia’s Founders Edition

Zotac’s RTX 5090 SOLID is a quieter, cooler-memory alternative to the Founders Edition, but its 3.5-slot bulk and 575 W power draw make fit and pricing decisive.

The Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID is a quieter, bulkier alternative to Nvidia’s Founders Edition—not a substantially faster one. It uses the same RTX 5090 GPU, memory, clocks and 575 W power class. Its reasons to exist are the large triple-fan cooler, cooler GDDR7 memory, dual BIOS, RGB lighting and included support stand. The Founders Edition remains the better choice for a two-slot build, a smaller case or anyone who can buy near Nvidia’s $1,999 launch price.

What the Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID actually is

The standard SOLID (SKU ZT-B50900D-10P) is stock-clocked, so it should not be confused with the separately sold SOLID OC. It is a board-partner implementation of Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX 5090, with 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, 28 Gbps memory and a 2,407 MHz advertised boost clock. The card uses PCIe 5.0 x16 and provides three DisplayPort 2.1b outputs plus HDMI.

Zotac’s design is substantial: a vapor chamber, IceStorm 3.0 heatsink, BladeLink fans, metal mid-frame and backplate, fan-stop mode, SPECTRA RGB, dual BIOS and a bundled support stand. The official specification lists 575 W power consumption, a recommended 1,000 W power supply and dimensions of 329.7 × 137.8 × 67.8 mm—approximately 3.5 slots thick. See the official Zotac specification.

SOLID versus Founders Edition: specifications and design

Length 329.7 mm 304 mm
Thickness 3.5 slots (67.8 mm) 2 slots
Height 137.8 mm 137 mm

Nvidia’s comparison page identifies the Founders Edition as a 304 mm, two-slot, SFF-Ready Enthusiast card. That label should not be transferred to the much thicker SOLID. Although Nvidia recommends three unused expansion slots or equivalent clearance around the FE for airflow and cable routing, the FE is materially easier to install.

Performance: effectively a tie

The SOLID does not have a faster GPU. In Notebookcheck’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D test system running Windows 11 Pro and Nvidia driver 572.42, its overall synthetic rating was 89.2 versus 89.5 for the FE. The SOLID scored 49,144 versus 48,663 in 3DMark Time Spy Graphics, while the publication’s gaming rating was 99.8 versus 96.8. Notebookcheck described that gaming difference as approximately 3% and negligible in practical use.

Small gaps like these can come from boost behavior, drivers, game patches, temperatures and run-to-run variance. Treat the cards as performance equivalents, not as a meaningful upgrade over one another. The SOLID’s larger heatsink may sustain clocks differently in a particular case, but it does not change the underlying CUDA, RT or Tensor hardware.

4K gaming and DLSS 4

An RTX 5090 is a 4K flagship, but the card does not guarantee 4K/240 in every demanding game. Notebookcheck recorded more than 100 fps in some AAA titles at maximum 4K settings with ray tracing, while particularly heavy games such as Black Myth: Wukong and Star Wars Outlaws fell below 60 fps in some tested conditions.

Both cards support the same Blackwell feature set: DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, three ninth-generation NVENC encoders, two sixth-generation NVDEC decoders and AV1 encode/decode. Nvidia’s launch material claimed up to twice the RTX 4090 performance in selected Blackwell and DLSS 4 workloads; that is a platform claim, not a universal native-rendering result. Super Resolution reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render, while generated frames raise displayed frame rate without providing the same input-latency or native-rendering gain. See Nvidia’s launch announcement and DLSS 4 explanation.

Against an RTX 4090

For RTX 4090 owners, the upgrade case depends on DLSS 4, AI and creator workloads, or a specific game that benefits from Blackwell features. Native raster gains are not a uniform doubling, so an already-satisfactory 4090 is not automatically obsolete.

Cooling, temperatures and noise

The SOLID’s strongest evidence-based advantage is its cooler behavior, especially memory temperature. Notebookcheck measured 43.5 dB(A) under full load and approximately 82°C VRAM—about 10°C below the FE in that comparison. The GPU core nevertheless stabilized slightly above 80°C under stress, so the enormous cooler does not produce a dramatic core-temperature victory.

A light-load measurement was 34.4 dB(A), with coil whine contributing. Coil whine varies by individual card, power supply, frame rate and workload; it is not a guaranteed SOLID characteristic. These are open-test-bench measurements, not a promise of the same sound level inside every closed case. Lower acoustic output also does not mean lower energy use: both boards remain 575 W-class cards. Notebookcheck’s full review also noted hotspot temperatures above 90°C around the power-connector area.

Power, cable and installation requirements

Zotac recommends a 1,000 W PSU and the card uses one 12V-2×6 input. The box includes a four-8-pin-to-16-pin adapter. Notebookcheck measured more than 600 W for its complete test system during gaming and up to 766 W in stress testing; those figures are system measurements, not the card’s nominal rating.

  1. Use a native, properly rated 12V-2×6 cable from your PSU manufacturer when available.
  2. Fully seat the connector before powering on; no portion of the plug should remain visibly loose.
  3. Avoid a sharp bend immediately beside the connector and leave the case side-panel clearance the cable requires.
  4. If using the supplied adapter, follow the PSU and Zotac documentation and connect every required plug.
  5. Plan airflow for 575 W of heat. The connector area and adjacent components need unobstructed ventilation.

The Zotac adapter worked in Notebookcheck’s testing but had shorter, less flexible cables than Nvidia’s FE adapter, making routing more difficult in some cases.

Will the SOLID fit your PC?

Do not check only the advertised GPU-length limit. Before ordering, verify all of the following:

  • Maximum GPU length with front fans, a radiator and drive cages installed. The card is 329.7 mm long.
  • At least 3.5 slots of thickness and enough room for the support stand.
  • 137.8 mm of vertical card height plus side-panel and 12V-2×6 cable clearance.
  • Whether neighboring PCIe slots remain usable after installation.
  • Whether the front radiator, pump, reservoir or drive cage conflicts with the heatsink.

A case that advertises support for a long card can still reject a 3.5-slot model. The FE’s 304 mm length and two-slot thickness make it the safer choice for compact or densely populated systems.

Price, availability and warranty

Nvidia launched the RTX 5090 at $1,999 in the United States on January 30, 2025. That is a launch MSRP, not a guarantee of current stock or street pricing. Zotac’s product page does not establish a current US price or inventory status, so check the retailer, region, return policy and whether the listing is the standard SOLID or SOLID OC.

For context, Zotac’s official US store displayed the factory-overclocked SOLID OC at $3,699.99 and out of stock when crawled. That listing is not the price of the stock-clocked SOLID and illustrates why a large board-partner premium destroys the value proposition.

Zotac’s UK product page states three years of standard warranty plus two additional years after registration; terms and registration deadlines vary by country. Confirm the policy for your market rather than assuming five years everywhere. See the UK warranty language.

Who should buy which card?

Priority Better choice Why
Quieter operation and cooler memory SOLID Lower full-load noise and approximately 10°C lower VRAM in Notebookcheck’s comparison.
Compactness and slot access Founders Edition 304 mm and two slots versus approximately 330 mm and 3.5 slots.
Maximum value Whichever is near $1,999 Core performance is effectively identical; premium pricing buys board design, not a faster GPU.
RGB, dual BIOS and bundled support SOLID These are Zotac board features absent from the reference design.
Factory overclock SOLID OC or another partner card The standard SOLID is stock-clocked; compare the OC model as a separate SKU.

Alternatives worth considering

RTX 5090 Founders Edition

Choose the FE when two-slot clearance, Nvidia’s reference appearance, its adapter implementation or access to the $1,999 launch price matters more than memory thermals, RGB and the support stand.

Another RTX 5090 partner card

Partner models may offer a shorter cooler, a different fan curve, a factory overclock, a regionally stronger warranty or a more suitable color scheme. They are preferable when the SOLID is too large or carries a severe premium.

RTX 4090, RTX 5080 or lower

An RTX 4090 at a substantial discount can make sense for owners who do not need Blackwell features. Buyers without a 4K high-refresh display, heavy ray tracing, creation or AI workload should also compare the RTX 5080 and lower tiers rather than paying for a 575 W flagship.

Verdict

Buy the Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID when it is close to normal RTX 5090 pricing, fits your case with genuine 3.5-slot and cable clearance, and you value quieter operation, cooler memory, dual BIOS and the included support hardware. Choose the Founders Edition when compact dimensions, reference design or MSRP access comes first. Do not pay a large SOLID premium for frame-rate gains: the two cards deliver essentially the same RTX 5090 performance.
