nvoglv64.dll is NVIDIA’s 64-bit OpenGL driver component. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or names it as a faulting module, the safest first fix is to reinstall the correct NVIDIA graphics driver rather than downloading the DLL separately.
This file is installed as part of the NVIDIA display-driver package. It is not a Windows runtime file, and reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will not normally restore it.
What nvoglv64.dll does
OpenGL applications use a driver component called an Installable Client Driver, or ICD, to communicate with the graphics card. nvoglv64.dll is NVIDIA’s 64-bit OpenGL ICD.
That makes it relevant to:
- OpenGL games
- CAD and 3D applications
- Emulators
- Java applications that use OpenGL
- Creative and visualization software
- Applications such as AutoCAD and Fusion
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the file may be staged below a path resembling:

The folder name varies with the GPU, driver package, Windows build, and installation history. DriverStore contains complete driver packages. Do not copy individual files out of it or edit its contents manually.
A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit NVIDIA OpenGL component, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. nvoglv64.dll cannot substitute for the matching 32-bit component, sometimes referred to as nvogl32.dll or nvoglv32.dll depending on the package.
First, identify the exact error
These messages do not all mean the same thing:
- “nvoglv64.dll is missing” or “was not found”: the application loader could not find or load a required dependency.
- “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)”: commonly indicates an architecture or dependency problem, but the exact cause needs investigation.
- “Faulting module name: nvoglv64.dll”: the application started and later crashed while executing code in, or interacting with, the NVIDIA OpenGL driver.
- “nvoglv64.dll Access Violation”: the crash may involve the driver, application, overlays, unstable hardware, or an incompatible update.
If only one game fails, suspect that game or its configuration first. If several OpenGL programs fail, the NVIDIA driver becomes the leading suspect.
Fix 1: Reinstall the NVIDIA driver cleanly
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix for a missing, damaged, incomplete, or crashing copy of nvoglv64.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Download the correct driver
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the exact NVIDIA GPU model.
- Check whether Windows is 64-bit by opening Settings → System → About and looking at System type.
- Download the driver for that GPU and Windows architecture from NVIDIA’s official driver-download page.
If this is a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page as well. Some laptop makers validate a particular graphics-driver branch for the machine’s firmware, display switching, or power management.
Do not choose a driver based only on the file name. The complete package must match the GPU and operating system.
Install with the clean option
- Close games, launchers, browsers, monitoring utilities, and 3D applications.
- Run the NVIDIA driver installer.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when prompted.
- Select Perform a clean installation, if the option is available.
- Continue the installation and restart Windows when asked.
A clean installation replaces the driver package instead of relying on potentially damaged files from the existing installation. It also gives the installer a chance to restore the correct OpenGL components and their associated configuration.

After restarting, launch the affected application. If it starts normally, test another OpenGL application if one is available. A repair that works in several programs points to the driver as the original cause.
Manually finding the correct GPU, package, and driver branch can be tedious, particularly on systems with several stale drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation require the full version, and NVIDIA’s official package remains the appropriate source for this specific file.
Fix 2: Roll back a driver that introduced the crash
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
If the problem began immediately after an NVIDIA driver update, the newest package may be incompatible with the application or with older hardware.
Roll back through Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA GPU and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this driver rollback path in its driver update and rollback guidance.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install an earlier official NVIDIA driver that was known to work with the affected application. Avoid random repacked installers.

Treat that as a hardware- and version-specific possibility, not as a universal requirement for nvoglv64.dll.
Fix 3: Repair or verify the affected game or application
Time needed: 10–45 minutes
If one program fails while other OpenGL applications work, reinstalling the NVIDIA driver may not be enough.
Try these steps in order:
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Find the affected game or program in your library.
- Open its properties, management, or installation menu.
- Choose Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or the equivalent official file-checking option.
- Allow the launcher to replace damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
For a conventional desktop application:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Reinstall the application if the error continues.
Autodesk documents nvoglv64.dll faulting-module crashes in AutoCAD and startup crashes in Fusion. Updating, repairing, or reinstalling the affected Autodesk application is appropriate when the problem is limited to that software.

Also test the application with optional components disabled:
- In-game overlays
- Recording utilities
- GPU monitoring tools
- Shader injectors and graphics mods

- Third-party launch parameters
These programs can hook into the graphics API and make a driver interaction appear to be a damaged DLL.
Fix 4: Check Event Viewer for the failing program
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Event Viewer can distinguish a loader failure from a real application crash.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log from the right-hand pane.
- Select Error under event level.
- Look for an entry created at the time of the failure.
- Open the event and record:
- Faulting application name
- Faulting module name
- Exception code
- Fault offset
- Application path
An entry naming nvoglv64.dll with an access-violation exception means the application crashed while using the NVIDIA OpenGL path. It does not prove that the file itself is corrupt.
If the application name is 32-bit, check that the application has the correct 32-bit NVIDIA support installed through the complete driver package. Do not attempt to solve an architecture mismatch by copying a DLL between folders.

Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Security software can quarantine a driver file, although the correct response is verification and a clean reinstall, not blindly restoring it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the NVIDIA driver.
- Check the detected file path, threat name, and action.
- Run a full scan if malware is possible.
- Reinstall the driver from NVIDIA’s official package.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can make it active again. Only restore a file after confirming that it is genuine, correctly signed, and that the system is not infected. When in doubt, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete driver package.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus a restart
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not specifically reinstall an NVIDIA driver, but they can help when Windows servicing or system-file corruption prevents a driver package from installing correctly.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA driver if
nvoglv64.dllis still missing or crashing.
Microsoft provides instructions for DISM image repair and SFC system-file checking.
Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed is inefficient. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it does not replace the need to reinstall the NVIDIA driver when the driver package is the actual problem.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a major system change
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use System Restore when the failure began after a driver, application, or system change and the normal driver repair path has not solved it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem started.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore operation.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
Microsoft explains this process in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers or applications. Try the current official NVIDIA driver repair first unless the system is unable to use the display driver normally.
Do not download or register nvoglv64.dll manually
Avoid DLL download sites websites and files copied from another PC. A matching name can still have the wrong architecture, version, signature, dependencies, or malicious content. Copying a file also leaves the driver’s INF, registry entries, companion files, and installation state unrepaired.
regsvr32 nvoglv64.dll is not an appropriate fix. Graphics ICDs are installed and configured by the NVIDIA driver package; they are not repaired by manually registering them with regsvr32. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s registration purpose.

Likewise, Settings → Optional features → More Windows features will not install NVIDIA’s OpenGL driver. Do not enable random Windows features in response to this error. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs are relevant only when the error also names one of their files or the application installer specifically requires them.
What can cause the error
| Likely cause | What usually helps |
|---|---|
| Corrupt or incomplete NVIDIA driver | Clean-install the correct official driver |
| A recent driver regression | Roll back or install a compatible earlier driver |
| One damaged game or application | Repair, reinstall, or verify its files |
| 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch | Reinstall the complete matching driver package |
| Overlay, mod, or monitoring conflict | Disable injected graphics utilities |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection History and reinstall safely |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Old CPU compatibility issue | Test a compatible driver branch |
| Overclocking, heat, power, or GPU failure | Return hardware to stock settings and run diagnostics |
Persistent crashes across several OpenGL applications after a clean driver installation point toward a broader compatibility or hardware problem. Remove GPU and CPU overclocks, check temperatures, test without overlays, and try a known-compatible driver branch. If failures continue, test the GPU, memory, power delivery, and system stability.
FAQ
Is nvoglv64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an NVIDIA 64-bit OpenGL driver component installed with the display-driver package.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32. Reinstall the complete NVIDIA driver so Windows receives the correct files and configuration.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ Redistributables do not install nvoglv64.dll. Repair them only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file or the application requires them separately.
Why does the file appear under DriverStore?
Windows stages complete driver packages in DriverStore. The location is normal, but it is not a repair target for manual file copying or editing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the file exists but the program still crashes?
The failure may be an application-driver interaction, incompatible update, overlay conflict, unsupported hardware, overclock, overheating, or defective GPU. Use Event Viewer to identify the application and exception code.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Record the GPU model, Windows version and build, NVIDIA driver version, affected application, whether other OpenGL programs fail, the Event Viewer exception code, and whether the problem began after an update. That information separates a driver-wide failure from an application-specific crash.
