mozsqlite3.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. If mozsqlite3.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, identify the program named in the error and repair that program rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.

The file is a Mozilla-family SQLite library historically used by Windows versions of Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, and other Mozilla/XUL applications. Older installations stored it beside the application executable. Some legacy programs and games may also have bundled their own copy.

mozsqlite3.dll: quick identification

Detail What is known
File name mozsqlite3.dll
Category Application file
Function Embedded SQLite database library
Typical owner A Mozilla application or another program that bundled Mozilla components
Windows component No
Common historical builds 32-bit versions including 3.7.12.1, 3.7.10.0, 3.7.5.0, and 3.7.4.0
Correct location Usually the owning program’s installation directory
Safe replacement The exact file from the same official application installer and build

The listed legacy version and size records come from public file indexes, not authoritative Mozilla release documentation. Do not use those numbers to select a replacement DLL.

Modern Firefox builds may fold SQLite into another Mozilla library, so a current installation may not contain a separate mozsqlite3.dll. Its absence is not automatically a problem.

First, identify the program that is failing

Read the complete error message. It may name the executable, such as:

  • firefox.exe
  • thunderbird.exe
  • A legacy Mozilla application
  • A game launcher
  • An enterprise or specialist application

If the message does not identify the program, use the title bar, desktop shortcut, Start menu entry, or the application that you launched immediately beforehand.

You can also inspect a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. Note the executable path and whether it is inside Program Files, Program Files (x86), or another application folder.

Check the location of any existing copy of the DLL. A copy beside the owning executable may be legitimate. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves closer inspection. Windows normally searches the executable’s directory before system directories, so placing a private application DLL in a system folder is unsafe and can create version conflicts.

Also ask what changed immediately before the failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Did the error appear after an application update?
  • Was an installation interrupted?
  • Did antivirus software quarantine a file?
  • Was an old application folder restored from backup?
  • Did disk cleanup remove program files?
  • Is the application very old compared with the current Windows release?

These clues usually point to an incomplete, corrupt, or mixed application installation.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application

This is the most reliable fix for a missing or damaged mozsqlite3.dll.

If the program has a repair option

Some launchers and enterprise applications provide their own repair feature.

  1. Open the application’s launcher.
  2. Select Settings, Manage, or the menu beside the application.
  3. Look for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
  4. Start the scan and allow it to replace damaged files.
  5. Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
  6. Open the program again.

If the error disappears, the application had a missing or mismatched file. If the launcher reports that repair failed, use a clean reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean reinstall through Windows

Before removing the program, back up important profile data. Firefox profile data normally resides separately from the program directory, but a backup is still sensible. Thunderbird profiles and data should also be preserved before uninstalling.

Rank #2
  1. Download a fresh installer from the application developer’s official website. If the affected browser will not open, use Microsoft Edge or another trusted browser.
  2. Close the affected program.
  3. Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  4. Find the owning application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  6. Follow the uninstall wizard.
  7. Keep user data or profile data if the wizard offers that choice.
  8. Restart Windows if the installer or antivirus may have locked a file.
  9. If the old program directory remains, remove only that application’s folder. Common Firefox locations include:
  10. C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox
  11. C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefox
  12. Run the official installer again.
  13. Start the program and test the operation that previously failed.

Do not delete profile folders unless you have confirmed that your bookmarks, passwords, messages, and other data are backed up.

A clean reinstall is particularly important when the error says:

The procedure entry point sqlite3_db_status could not be located in the dynamic link library mozsqlite3.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That message usually means the executable and DLL are from incompatible builds. Replacing only the DLL with a newer or older copy can leave the mismatch in place.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and file blocking

Security software may quarantine an application DLL after an update, during a scan, or after restoring an old application folder.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving the affected application directory or mozsqlite3.dll.
  5. Record the detection name and file path.
  6. Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar.
  7. If the file came from an official installer and the detection is confirmed as a false positive, follow your security product’s restore or allow procedure.
  8. If the source is unknown, remove or quarantine the file and reinstall the application from its official installer.
  9. Run a full Windows Security scan before launching the repaired program.

A file called mozsqlite3.dll in an unrelated folder is not automatically legitimate. Malware has used names associated with Mozilla components to appear trustworthy. Its location, digital signature, provenance, and antivirus detection all matter.

If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, leave security protection enabled and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly downloading replacements.

Fix 3: Match the application architecture and build

Legacy versions of this file were commonly 32-bit. A 32-bit DLL cannot be casually substituted into a 64-bit application, and a DLL from a newer application may not export the functions expected by an older executable.

Check the application rather than guessing from the Windows edition:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the affected application and review its details if architecture is shown.
  3. Check the application’s installation path. Program Files (x86) often indicates a 32-bit application, while Program Files often contains 64-bit applications, but the folder alone is not conclusive.
  4. Use the application’s own About or Help page when it opens.
  5. If it will not start, reinstall the current official build appropriate for your Windows system.
  6. For a legacy program, obtain its exact installer from the original developer or software administrator.

Do not choose a file because it has the newest displayed version. The correct DLL is the one shipped with the exact application build.

Fix 4: Separate the DLL error from a missing dependency

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mozsqlite3.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Read the entire error carefully. If it names a file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll, VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, or MSVCP140.dll, address that Visual C++ runtime separately. Download the supported Visual C++ Redistributable only from Microsoft’s official documentation and installer links.

Visual C++ does not provide mozsqlite3.dll. Installing it will not replace the application file.

DirectX, .NET, and Windows Features are also not general fixes for this DLL. Use them only when the complete error identifies that component or the owning application’s documentation specifically requires it.

To check optional Windows components:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the enabled features.
  5. Do not enable random features to cure this error.
  6. Close the window without changes unless the affected program specifically requires a named feature.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other symptoms support it

mozsqlite3.dll is normally an application-local file. System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components, not usually a third-party Mozilla DLL. They are appropriate when Windows itself has damaged files, updates are failing, or several unrelated system components are malfunctioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the permission prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart and test the application.

If both commands complete successfully but the same application still reports mozsqlite3.dll, return to the application’s clean reinstall. Repeating SFC and DISM will not reconstruct a private DLL from a Mozilla application.

When manually hunting through Windows component versions and repeating repair commands makes the cause unclear, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall drivers only for a separate driver symptom

A display, storage, or security driver is not the normal owner of mozsqlite3.dll. Do not reinstall drivers solely because this DLL is missing.

Consider a driver update only if Device Manager shows a warning icon, Windows reports a separate hardware error, or the application fails with additional graphics or storage messages.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the affected device.
  4. Select Properties → Driver.
  5. Note the provider and driver details.
  6. Use Update driver only when a driver issue is indicated.
  7. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which drivers are stale and identifying compatible replacements; its full-version driver installation is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns mozsqlite3.dll.

Fix 7: Check disk health, malware, and System Restore

If application files repeatedly become corrupt or vanish, investigate the wider system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a full security scan. Then check whether the drive is reporting errors or whether other files are also being damaged. Avoid deleting application files while a scan is in progress.

System Restore is reasonable only when the failure clearly began after a recent installation, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore only after saving current work.

System Restore may undo recent application changes, but it is not guaranteed to restore the correct application build or a working copy of this DLL.

What not to do

Do not download a random DLL

Generic DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file that does not match the executable. Even a clean file can fail if the real problem is a damaged installation or missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official installer for the application that produced the error. If the program is Firefox, Thunderbird, a legacy Mozilla application, or a game, obtain its installer from that developer or the organization that supplied it.

Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64

System32 and SysWOW64 are not universal storage locations for application DLLs. Copying a private library there can make another program load the wrong version and can hide the original installation problem.

Do not register it with regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. mozsqlite3.dll is a private SQLite runtime library, not a COM control. Running regsvr32 mozsqlite3.dll is expected to fail or be irrelevant.

Do not use registry cleaners

A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct a missing application file and can remove settings needed by unrelated programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling did not work

Collect these details before trying another repair:

  1. The exact error text.
  2. The full path of the executable named in the error.
  3. The location of every mozsqlite3.dll found on the drive.
  4. Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. The date and change that preceded the failure.
  6. Any antivirus detection name and quarantine action.
  7. Whether a shortcut or launcher points to an old copy.
  8. Whether the program is a current release or a legacy build.

Check the shortcut again after reinstalling. A launcher may still be starting an older copy from another folder. If the program starts but behaves incorrectly only after startup, create a new application profile and test it. Profile corruption is generally not the cause of a DLL load failure that happens before the program opens, but it can explain later crashes or database errors.

FAQ

Is mozsqlite3.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an application library historically shipped with Mozilla-family software and other programs that bundled Mozilla components. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only if the complete error separately names that dependency or the owning application requires it. Visual C++ does not supply mozsqlite3.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a modern Firefox folder not contain the file?

Modern Mozilla Windows builds may combine SQLite with another Mozilla library. A separate mozsqlite3.dll is not required in every current build.

Can I restore the DLL from antivirus quarantine?

Only after verifying the file’s original path, source, detection name, and provenance. Reinstalling from the official application installer is safer when there is any doubt.

Will SFC repair mozsqlite3.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is ordinarily an application-local file.

What is the safest final fix?

Identify the executable in the error, preserve the user profile, remove the damaged application installation, and reinstall that same program from its official vendor installer.
