If Windows says nvrsit.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or remove the NVIDIA software that still references it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is identified as the NVIDIA Italian language resource library from NVIDIA Corporation. It was included with the NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 29.42, an obsolete XP/2000-era driver package.
nvrsit.dll identification
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| File | nvrsit.dll |
| Description | NVIDIA Italian language resource library |
| Publisher | NVIDIA Corporation |
| Driver association | NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 29.42 |
| File type | Language-resource DLL used by an NVIDIA graphics-driver installation |
| Windows component | No |
| Normal modern fix | Repair, remove, or reinstall the complete NVIDIA driver package |
Historical copies associated with NVIDIA driver releases can differ. A commonly indexed 29.42 copy is a 32-bit Win32 file, but that does not make every file with this name interchangeable. Do not copy an arbitrary 32-bit or 64-bit DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or a program folder.
Why Windows reports this error
The message usually means that a program is trying to load an NVIDIA component that is no longer present or is incompatible with the rest of the installation. The underlying cause is often one of these:
#1 Best Overall
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
- An NVIDIA driver update stopped partway through.
- A failed uninstall left behind a startup entry.
- A cleanup utility removed the DLL but not the software reference.
- An old NVIDIA package was installed on a newer version of Windows.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A program or game still expects an older NVIDIA component.
- The file does not match the architecture or version expected by the caller.
- The NVIDIA installation is damaged.
The exact wording helps narrow the investigation:
- “nvrsit.dll was not found” or “is missing” usually means the file is absent from the location requested by the program.
- “Error loading nvrsit.dll” often points to a stale startup entry, missing dependency, or incompatible installation.
- “The application or DLL … is not a valid Windows image” commonly indicates a damaged, mismatched, or incompatible binary.
- An error that appears only during login usually points to an obsolete startup item or service.
- An error that appears only when launching one game or application may belong to that program’s old graphics integration rather than to the current NVIDIA driver.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver
This is the best first fix when the error began after updating, rolling back, uninstalling, or cleaning an NVIDIA driver.
Do not try to repair only nvrsit.dll. Install the complete driver package for the exact graphics card and operating system.
Find the graphics card model
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the complete NVIDIA model name.
- If the adapter shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is not currently using the normal NVIDIA driver.
- Right-click the adapter, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider and date, but do not assume the newest-looking driver is correct for the hardware.
Remove the damaged NVIDIA installation
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for NVIDIA.
- Uninstall NVIDIA graphics-driver components that belong to the damaged installation.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
On older Windows versions:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Remove the NVIDIA display-driver components.
- Restart the computer.
If the display temporarily falls back to a basic driver, that is expected. The screen may use a lower resolution until the correct package is installed.
Install the replacement driver
- Use NVIDIA’s official driver search or the computer manufacturer’s support page.
- Select the exact GPU model and Windows edition.
- Download the complete display-driver package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Choose Custom installation if offered.
- Select Perform a clean installation if that option is available.
- Install the display driver and the components you actually need.
- Restart Windows.
If the PC is old enough to have used Windows XP or Windows 2000, do not install the historical 29.42 package on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Those archived packages are not modern Windows drivers. Use the supported driver for the current operating system, or remove the obsolete software if the old hardware is no longer in use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you are unsure which of many installed drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and show the driver problems; its full version performs the driver installation, but it is not required and the official hardware manufacturer remains the safest source for a manually selected driver.
How to tell whether this worked
After restarting:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Open the NVIDIA adapter’s Properties.
- Confirm that Device status says the device is working properly.
- Launch the program that produced the error.
- Restart Windows once more to confirm that no startup message returns.
If the error remains but the graphics adapter works normally, continue with the stale-startup checks below.
Fix 2: Remove a stale startup reference
A missing nvrsit.dll message during login does not necessarily mean the current NVIDIA driver is broken. Windows may be launching an old helper program that still points to the file.

Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for old NVIDIA entries or an entry whose publisher is unknown.
- Right-click a suspicious item and choose Disable.
- Restart the computer.
Disabling an old startup item is safer than deleting registry entries immediately. If the error disappears and graphics continue to work, the obsolete launcher was probably the caller.
Check installed programs
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Search for old NVIDIA utilities, display tools, or software associated with hardware that is no longer installed.
- Remove only software you recognize as obsolete.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove the active display driver merely because an old utility has a similar name. Confirm the current adapter in Device Manager first.
Check the application named in the error
If the message identifies a program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Find the named program.
- Choose its menu button and select Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair first.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the program from its official publisher.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command before reinstalling. The game may be calling an old NVIDIA component even though the current graphics driver is healthy.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. Do not restore it solely because the filename matches. First confirm that the detection belongs to the known NVIDIA installation and that the driver was obtained from a trusted manufacturer source.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- Expand an item related to
nvrsit.dll. - Check its original path, detection name, and associated program.
- If the file belongs to an old or unknown driver package, leave it quarantined and reinstall the correct driver instead.
- If you have verified that the file belongs to the trusted, correct NVIDIA installer, follow Microsoft’s available Restore or Allow on device option.
- Reinstall the complete driver afterward if other files were also removed.
Microsoft’s guidance for reviewing quarantined items is available in Protection History.
A restored DLL may immediately be quarantined again if the underlying package is damaged or if the security product detects a genuine problem. Reinstalling the driver is more reliable than repeatedly restoring an isolated file.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are commonly installed as 64-bit systems, but they can still run 32-bit applications. That does not mean a legacy 32-bit NVIDIA DLL can be substituted freely into a modern driver installation.
The historical 29.42 copy associated with nvrsit.dll is identified as a 32-bit Win32 file. Other NVIDIA driver releases may contain different versions or file sizes. A file from one release may fail when loaded by another release because its dependencies and expected interfaces differ.
Use this rule:
- Install a driver that matches the GPU and operating system.
- Do not place a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver folder as a test.
- Do not place a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder.
- Do not copy a file from another NVIDIA release simply because the filename matches.
- Do not assume
System32means 64-bit in every context or thatSysWOW64is the correct destination for this file.
If the error comes from an old application, repair or reinstall that application. If it comes from a driver component, reinstall the complete NVIDIA package.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other files also fail
System File Checker and DISM do not normally recreate a third-party NVIDIA language-resource DLL. They are appropriate when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, including failures involving built-in system files, Windows Update, Settings, or multiple applications.
Open an elevated terminal:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The documented procedure is described in Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Possible results include:
- No integrity violations: Windows system files are probably not the cause. Return to NVIDIA driver and startup checks.
- Corrupt files were repaired: Restart and test the application again.
- Some files could not be repaired: Restart, run DISM and SFC again if necessary, and investigate Windows servicing or recovery options.
If you want a guided scan that identifies repair problems instead of repeatedly interpreting command output, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds; the repair is performed by the full version, and it should not replace reinstalling the NVIDIA package when that is the actual cause.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when nvrsit.dll errors started immediately after a driver update, cleanup operation, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files unchanged. Microsoft’s explanation is available in System Restore.
After the rollback, prevent the same problem by installing the correct driver package rather than restoring an old standalone DLL.

Do not download nvrsit.dll from a random DLL website
An isolated DLL can be:
- The wrong historical version.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing its dependent files.
- Modified or bundled with malware.
- Incompatible with the installed NVIDIA driver.
- Placed in the wrong directory.
Even when the copy appears to remove the message, it may leave the driver installation inconsistent. Use the complete NVIDIA installer or an OEM driver package for the exact computer.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX and COM components. There is no evidence that nvrsit.dll, a language-resource library, requires registration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Running:
regsvr32 nvrsit.dll
will not rebuild an NVIDIA driver. It may produce another error and distract from the real problem. Microsoft’s reference for the command is available at regsvr32 documentation.
Do not install unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal remedy for this file. Install or repair one of those runtimes only when the actual application separately reports a missing runtime dependency.

Do not mix old driver files with modern drivers
The 29.42 package belongs to the Windows 2000/XP driver era. Its presence in an old program does not make it suitable for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Modern Windows may refuse the package, and forcing its files into the system can create additional driver conflicts.
If the error still appears
If every repair above fails:
- Reopen the error and identify the calling program.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting Event Viewer.
- Review Windows Logs and Application around the time of the failure.
- Check Task Scheduler Library for obsolete NVIDIA tasks.
- Review third-party startup utilities only after creating a restore point.
- Run a full malware scan.
- Check disk health if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Test with a new Windows user profile if the error affects only one account.
- Use Windows recovery options if other applications also fail.
If graphics work normally and only one obsolete program reports nvrsit.dll, uninstalling or replacing that program may be the correct final fix. The goal is not to preserve a historical DLL at any cost. The goal is a coherent, compatible NVIDIA driver installation with no stale software calling files it no longer needs.

Is nvrsit.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an NVIDIA driver resource file and should not be treated as a protected Windows system DLL.
Which driver contains it?
The file is associated with NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver Version 29.42. Later historical NVIDIA packages may contain different copies or versions, so the filename alone does not identify a universal build.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Manual copying can introduce an incompatible version, wrong architecture, or malware. Reinstall the complete driver or the application that calls it.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. Those runtimes do not normally supply an NVIDIA language-resource DLL.
Should I use regsvr32?
No, unless NVIDIA documentation specifically identifies the file as a self-registering COM component. There is no evidence that this resource DLL needs registration.
What if Windows 11 reports the error?
Treat it as a legacy-software or stale-driver reference first. Install the current driver for the GPU. If an old program alone requests the file, repair or replace that program rather than forcing an XP/2000-era NVIDIA DLL into Windows 11.
What if the error started after antivirus quarantine?
Review Windows Security Protection History. Restore a file only after verifying its source and safety. In most cases, reinstalling the complete trusted driver is safer than restoring the isolated DLL.
