nvsvc.dll errors usually appear as “nvsvc.dll is missing,” “nvsvc.dll was not found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because nvsvc.dll was not found.” nvsvc.dll is an NVIDIA Driver Helper Service file from an NVIDIA graphics-driver package, not a general Windows component.

- The error appeared after an NVIDIA update, driver removal, disk cleanup, or failed installation: reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver with a clean installation.
- Windows shows
rundll32.exe C:WindowsSystem32nvsvc.dll,nvsvcStartduring startup: repair the NVIDIA installation first. Windows may be trying to launch an orphaned startup reference. - The file was quarantined by antivirus: review Protection History, but reinstall the official driver unless the file’s NVIDIA origin and digital signature are clear.
- The error names
nvsvc.dll, but the NVIDIA GPU is no longer installed: remove the obsolete startup entry through the responsible application or startup manager rather than copying a replacement DLL. - Several unrelated Windows programs also fail: run DISM and SFC after checking the NVIDIA driver.
- The message actually names
MSVCP,MSVCR,VCRUNTIME,nvapi, nvspcap, or another file: follow the repair path for that file instead. Reinstalling NVIDIA may not address a different dependency. - The problem began immediately after a system change: use System Restore if driver reinstallation does not help.
Do not begin by downloading an isolated nvsvc.dll. The file must match the NVIDIA driver generation, architecture, dependencies, and installation context.

The file description is NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, and its publisher is NVIDIA Corporation. It was used by older NVIDIA display-driver packages and could be launched through a command resembling:

- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
rundll32.exe C:WindowsSystem32nvsvc.dll,nvsvcStart
That explains why the error may appear before the desktop loads, even when you are not opening a game.
nvsvc.dll is not supplied by Microsoft, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. It is also not required by every NVIDIA product or every current NVIDIA driver. Modern driver packages may no longer contain this exact legacy filename, so a successful current driver installation can fix the startup problem without recreating nvsvc.dll.
Historical file databases list examples such as these:
| Architecture | Historical version | Reported size | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 8.17.13.8494 | 2.01 MB | NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 384.94 |
| 32-bit | 8.17.13.4201 | 2.93 MB | NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 342.01 |
These are historical records, not recommendations for installing an old driver.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct NVIDIA driver
This is the most likely solution when the error started after a driver update, uninstall, cleanup operation, or interrupted installation.
1. Identify the graphics adapter
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact NVIDIA GPU name.
- If the adapter has a yellow warning icon, double-click it and read the Device status message.
If Display adapters shows only Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is not currently using the normal NVIDIA driver. Continue with the driver installation.
For a laptop with switchable graphics, record the laptop model as well as the NVIDIA adapter. If the generic NVIDIA installer fails, use the graphics driver supplied by the laptop manufacturer for that exact model.

2. Download the matching driver
Go to NVIDIA’s official driver-download page manually by entering NVIDIA’s address in your browser. Select:
- The correct product family
- The exact GPU model
- The Windows version
- The appropriate driver type
- Your language
Do not select a driver based only on the word “NVIDIA.” A laptop GPU, desktop GPU, older workstation adapter, and notebook variant may require different packages.
3. Install it with the clean option
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Run the NVIDIA installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- When installation choices appear, select Custom (Advanced).
- Continue to the component-selection screen.
- Select Perform a clean installation, if the option is available.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not require it.
A clean installation resets NVIDIA settings and removes old driver-related files and profiles. It may also eliminate a stale startup reference to nvsvc.dll.

Manually hunting through NVIDIA packages for an exact legacy filename can be difficult when several driver versions and GPU models are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the driver issue; its repair or installation features require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Check the result
After restarting:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the NVIDIA adapter.
- Check the Device status field.
- Open the program or game that previously failed.
The fix worked if the NVIDIA adapter has no device error and the original startup or application message no longer appears.
If the same message remains, note the exact path shown in the dialog. A message pointing to C:WindowsSystem32nvsvc.dll indicates an old system-level NVIDIA reference. A message naming a DLL inside a game folder points to that game instead.
Fix 2: Remove an orphaned startup reference
A startup message such as this is especially important:
C:WindowsSystem32nvsvc.dll - Missing entry: nvsvcStart
It can mean that an old NVIDIA package was partly removed while Windows retained a command that tries to start the helper service.
First, reinstall the matching NVIDIA driver using the procedure above. That is safer than deleting the reference because the system may still contain NVIDIA hardware that needs the driver.
If the NVIDIA GPU and all NVIDIA software have genuinely been removed:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for NVIDIA entries.
- Remove only software you recognize as belonging to the old installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry only when its name and file location clearly identify the obsolete NVIDIA reference.
Do not delete random registry values. If the entry is not visible in Task Manager, use the uninstaller for the application that created it or a reputable startup-management utility. Record the entry and its path before changing it.
If Windows still displays the message after the old hardware and software are gone, use System Restore rather than deleting unrelated system files.

Security software can isolate a driver file after a detection or a false positive. A missing file following a security scan does not automatically prove that the file was malware.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving NVIDIA files.
- Open an item to view its detection name, path, and action.
Only restore a quarantined file when all of these are true:

- It came from a legitimate NVIDIA installation.
- The path is consistent with the driver installation.
- The file’s digital signature identifies NVIDIA.
- Your security product or administrator has confirmed the detection is safe to reverse.
The safer repair is usually to reinstall the official NVIDIA driver. Do not restore a file merely because its name is nvsvc.dll. If several NVIDIA DLLs appeared after installing a cracked program or suspicious download, leave the files quarantined and run a full malware scan.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They generally do not recreate a missing proprietary NVIDIA DLL, so use them when Windows itself appears damaged or when several unrelated applications fail.

Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the window open until DISM reports completion.
Do not close the terminal because progress appears to pause. The operation can take time.
Run SFC second
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows when the scan finishes. Then reinstall the NVIDIA driver if nvsvc.dll is still missing.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker separately because they have different purposes.

Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows-protected files appear intact. Continue with NVIDIA driver repair.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not repair some: Restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the exact path and event details. This still does not guarantee restoration of
nvsvc.dll.
There is no normal Windows Features checkbox that installs nvsvc.dll. Do not enable random legacy features in an attempt to restore it.
Fix 5: Check the architecture and the exact filename
nvsvc.dll is a 32-bit legacy file. The related 64-bit filename is commonly nvsvc64.dll. They are not interchangeable.
A 32-bit application can require x86 components even when Windows is 64-bit. However, copying nvsvc64.dll and renaming it to nvsvc.dll will not make the installation correct.
Check these details:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
- Compare it with the driver package selected for the GPU.
- Check the exact filename in the error dialog.
Also check whether the file is in the path named by the error. If a copy of nvsvc.dll exists in an unexpected application folder, that does not prove it is the correct file. Examine its Properties and Digital Signatures tab. A legitimate copy should trace back to a genuine NVIDIA installation and identify NVIDIA appropriately.

Do not substitute similarly named files such as:
nvsvc64.dllnvapi.dllnvspcap.dllnvspcap64.dll
The correct repair depends on the exact file that the program requests.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver update, driver removal, system cleanup, or failed installation.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.

It does not replace a current driver installation, so after the rollback completes, install the correct NVIDIA driver if Windows still reports a problem. Microsoft explains the process and its effects in its System Restore guidance.
Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLL or ActiveX files that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command, and there is no verified reason to register nvsvc.dll this way.
Running commands such as these is not a substitute for driver repair:
regsvr32 nvsvc.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32nvsvc.dll
They may produce an error or give the impression that a registration problem exists when the actual issue is a damaged or incomplete NVIDIA installation. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents registration for that particular DLL.
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites sites are unsafe for this problem. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to the wrong driver generation, use the wrong architecture, lack dependencies, or fail to repair the stale service entry that caused the message.
The safe sources are:
- The official NVIDIA driver package for the installed GPU
- The laptop manufacturer’s official driver package when its hardware requires a customized driver
- A verified backup from the same computer and matching installation, used only in a controlled repair
Even a genuine historical nvsvc.dll may be wrong for the installed driver. Installing the owning driver package is the correct way to restore the surrounding files, services, settings, and dependencies.
What about Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
These are not the primary explanation for a missing nvsvc.dll. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the error names files such as MSVCP*.dll, MSVCR*.dll, or VCRUNTIME*.dll.

If the message names a different NVIDIA file, follow that file’s repair path. If it names a DLL inside the game directory, use the game launcher’s file-verification or repair feature. That will not normally repair a system-level NVIDIA driver installation.

FAQ
Is nvsvc.dll malware?
Not by name alone. It is a genuine NVIDIA Driver Helper Service file associated with older NVIDIA driver packages. Verify its path, digital signature, and installer origin. A file with the right name in an unusual folder can still be unsafe.
Is nvsvc.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an NVIDIA driver component, not a Microsoft Windows system file.
Is it part of GeForce Experience?
It belongs to the NVIDIA driver installation rather than being identified as a general Windows or Visual C++ component. GeForce Experience may be installed alongside NVIDIA drivers, but reinstalling that application alone is not the primary fix for a missing system-level nvsvc.dll.
What is the difference between nvsvc.dll and nvsvc64.dll?
nvsvc.dll is the 32-bit legacy filename. nvsvc64.dll is the commonly associated 64-bit counterpart. Do not rename or substitute one for the other.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will reinstalling Windows fix it?
It may remove the symptom, but it is excessive for a missing NVIDIA driver file. Identify the GPU and reinstall its driver first. Consider Windows repair or System Restore when there are broader system problems.
Why does the error appear at startup?
Windows may retain an old command that calls nvsvc.dll,nvsvcStart. This commonly points to a partially removed or damaged NVIDIA installation. Reinstall the driver before removing startup entries.
Should I reinstall Visual C++?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file. nvsvc.dll itself is an NVIDIA driver binary, so Visual C++ is not the normal repair.
What if Device Manager shows no NVIDIA GPU?
If the computer no longer has NVIDIA hardware, remove obsolete NVIDIA software through Installed apps, then inspect startup entries. If the hardware should be present but is missing, install the manufacturer’s chipset and graphics drivers or check for hardware and BIOS detection issues.

- The installed driver matches the GPU and Windows architecture.
- The driver came from NVIDIA or the laptop manufacturer.
- The installer used Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation, when offered.
