nxcooking.dll is a genuine legacy NVIDIA/AGEIA PhysX library used by older 32-bit games and applications. If Windows reports that nxcooking.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, restore the PhysX runtime belonging to the affected program rather than downloading an isolated DLL.

Older games may use nxcooking.dll for PhysX “cooking,” a process that prepares physics data such as collision meshes for use by the game. Modern PhysX installations use differently named files, including PhysXCooking_x86.dll and PhysXCooking_x64.dll. An old game that specifically requests nxcooking.dll may still need its matching legacy library.

First, identify the affected program
Read the complete error dialog and note which executable started it. The same DLL name can be used by different games with different PhysX requirements.
Also check whether the application is 32-bit. A 32-bit game needs a 32-bit dependency even when Windows 11 or Windows 10 is 64-bit. Installing only a 64-bit runtime does not satisfy a 32-bit executable.
Do not begin by copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Application DLLs are commonly loaded from the game’s own directory, beside the executable, or from a matching PhysX installation location.

Fix 1: Verify or repair the game files
This is the safest first step when the error began after a cleanup, update, failed installation, or mod change.
Steam games
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Start the game from Steam again.
Steam can replace missing or damaged files, including a bundled PhysX runtime. If the game starts afterward, do not add another copy of nxcooking.dll.
Other launchers usually provide a similar command named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Validate files. Open the launcher’s game settings and run that operation.
If verification finds nothing, look inside the game’s installation directory for a folder named Redist, Redistributables, Support, or PhysX. Run the included PhysX installer if one is present, then restart Windows.

A clean reinstall is more reliable than replacing one DLL because PhysX programs can require several matching libraries.
Fix 2: Install the correct official PhysX package
The most likely system-wide remedy is NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software package. The current public standard package is PhysX System Software 9.21.0713, which supports several PhysX SDK generations, including 2.7.1, 2.7.3, 2.8.0, 2.8.1, 2.8.3, and 2.8.4.
For very old games, install PhysX Legacy System Software 9.13.0604 as well. NVIDIA identifies older titles such as Cell Factor, Clive Barker’s Jericho, Gears of War, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Switchball, and Velvet Assassin as examples where the legacy package may be relevant.
Use this order:
- Close the affected game and launcher.
- Install the standard PhysX System Software package from NVIDIA.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original game executable.
- If it still requests
nxcooking.dlland the game is an older title, install the PhysX Legacy System Software package. - Restart Windows again and test the game.
Installing the latest NVIDIA display driver alone is not guaranteed to install or repair an old application runtime. PhysX software and graphics drivers are related to NVIDIA’s software stack, but a missing application DLL usually concerns the game’s runtime files rather than the display driver itself.
If an NVIDIA installer reports that the component is already installed, use Apps in Windows Settings to find the PhysX entry, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall the appropriate package. If the game shipped its own installer, prefer that bundled version because it may match the game more closely.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a genuine old DLL, especially when a game has been modified or its files resemble older software components.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the game directory or PhysX files.
- Expand a detection to see its path and status.
Restore or allow the file only when it came from the game’s original installer, trusted installation media, or an official PhysX package. If the source is unknown, do not restore it. Reinstall the game or PhysX package instead, then run another security scan.
If files repeatedly disappear after a clean reinstall, investigate the detection details and run a full scan. Do not disable protection simply to make the game start.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
nxcooking.dll is a third-party PhysX file, so Windows component repair normally will not download it. Use SFC and DISM when Windows itself is showing corruption, failing updates, broken system applications, or multiple unrelated errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally restores a missing application-specific PhysX DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepeating these commands without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported system problems, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for a missing bundled PhysX file.
Fix 5: Repair the graphics driver only when the installation is involved
A graphics driver reinstall is not the primary fix for nxcooking.dll, but it can help when the failure began immediately after a driver change or when the NVIDIA installer normally supplied the PhysX component for that system.
To check the driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the adapter shows a warning icon, right-click it, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the correct driver from NVIDIA’s official support channel. During installation, choose the custom or advanced option if available and confirm that the PhysX component is selected.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace repairing the game’s own PhysX files.

“nxcooking.dll is missing” or “was not found”
The file is absent from the location where the game expects it, or the game’s runtime installation is incomplete.
Run file verification, reinstall the bundled PhysX component, and then install the official standard or legacy PhysX package if necessary.
“The specified module could not be found”
This can mean that nxcooking.dll itself is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Restoring only the named file may not solve the loader failure.

Repair the complete application or PhysX runtime instead of copying a single replacement file.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
An error mentioning an entry point such as NxCookClothMesh usually indicates a wrong PhysX generation, an incompatible DLL, or a library being loaded from the wrong directory.
Remove manually copied DLLs from the game directory, undo recent mod changes, verify the game files, and reinstall the matching PhysX package. Do not substitute a newer file simply because it has the same name.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or status 0xc000007b
This usually points to corruption or a 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility problem. Reinstall the complete matching runtime and the game’s redistributables. Confirm that the old game is using its 32-bit dependencies.
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET may be needed for separate errors, but none is the primary runtime for nxcooking.dll.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 nxcooking.dll
A runtime DLL is normally loaded by the application. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. Registration will not supply missing PhysX dependencies and may produce another error.
What not to do
Do not download nxcooking.dll from a random DLL website. An isolated download can contain malware, belong to the wrong PhysX generation, use the wrong architecture, or fail because other PhysX libraries are also missing.
Do not copy the file into System32 or `SysWOW64 as a first-line repair. That can create version collisions and cause another application to load an incompatible library. Restore the file through the game’s official installer, launcher verification, trusted installation media, or NVIDIA’s official PhysX packages.

When to use System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, software cleanup, Windows change, or other system modification and the restore point predates the failure.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error appeared.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It may not restore a game file that was separately deleted, so verify or reinstall the application afterward if needed.
FAQ
Is nxcooking.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a legacy PhysX application library and should not normally be installed in a Windows system folder.
Is it a graphics-card driver?
No. It belongs to the PhysX software stack. The missing file usually indicates a game or application runtime problem, not a missing display driver.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does the latest NVIDIA driver not fix it?
Display driver packages do not necessarily restore the exact legacy PhysX runtime required by an older program. Install the game’s bundled PhysX component or the appropriate standard and legacy PhysX packages.
Should I install both PhysX packages?
Use the standard package first. Add the legacy package when the old program still specifically requires nxcooking.dll or is known to depend on an older PhysX generation.
Where should the DLL be located?
For many older applications, the matching DLL belongs beside the program executable or within the application’s own installed runtime folders. The original installer determines the correct location.
What if every fix fails?
Record the executable name, game version, Windows version, whether the executable is 32-bit, the complete error text, and any recent mod or antivirus action. Then perform a clean reinstall from the official application source and investigate dependency conflicts or malware if files continue to change.
